Looking For Aviattic 1/32 Fokker Dr.1 cowling
« on: January 26, 2017, 12:15:44 AM »
The cowling was referenced in this posting:

http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=4069

However, Google doesn't turn up any reference whatsoever to it, and it's not shown on Aviattic's site.  Either it never existed, or it's vanished without a trace :o  (By contrast, the Vector Oberursel Ur.II is everywhere.)

Any help would be appreciated!

Peter

Hi Peter, do not know about this cowling.  Try contacting them below (The Model Shop: Aviattic) or directly, I do not recall this one coming out.

Hi Peter,

It definitely existed -- I have one sitting next to me right now. I got mine direct from Ron. I'm not sure it ever made it into the Aviattic catalog though.

Thanks, Juan and Bo.  I'll contact Aviattic and see what they say.

I also have the Squadron Encore version of Roden's Dr.1, and it includes new resin parts for the engine and cowling.  I don't think the engine is from Vector, because the pour plug shape is different.  But the instructions specifically state that the cylinders will have to be shortened to fit inside the cowling.

The engine in that kit is definitely not from Vector. It's not bad I guess, but the the Vector version is much nicer -- imo. The resin cowling in the Encore kit is the early F.1 version, not correct if you are doing a Dr.I. Ron's cowling is/was for the Dr.I.

Honestly I think when I get around to mine I'll do a vac form, as even the resin version is a little on the thick side (but the vector engine will fit!)

ok, so I'm not spilling any beans here:

if you look at this thread about 3/4 down I think you'll see why the cowling is not in the catalog yet:

The engine in that kit is definitely not from Vector.

I'm sure you're right.  After I wrote that I realized that it must be from True Details, which is Squadron's brand.

Cutting Edge (long out of business) also produced a 1/32 Dr.I cowl, which shows  up on ebay from time to time:

I deleted it from the Aviattic range two years ago as I wasn't happy with it and have been refining a better version ever since - this is nearly ready for casting and will be released soon, along with two German wheel sizes to expand my range of "spare" parts for scratch builders, conversions etc.
Also about to land are new rib stitching decals (specially commissioned from HGW) to enhance those Roden/Special Hobby kits, designed to work with Aviattic linen decals cut as rib tapes to lay over them - and, again, encourage some scratch building...

Best wishes
Richard

Thank you Richard, these are really really great news! :)

That's good news, Richard. I remember asking about the Dr.I cowling one Telford, a couple of years ago.

Best wishes
