Title: What do you need from TaurusModels?
Post by: taurusmodels on July 09, 2014, 10:18:05 PM
Hi,
holidays finished, time to work!

I noticed, that my best sellers are products suggested by you. So I'd like to ask you, what is in yours oppinion most wanted/necessary for WNW's models.
Treat this topic as a wish list - the person who suggests the product as a first, and I'll do it, can expect a little parcel :)

For this time I'm planning few things:

Engines:
- Bentley BR2 - thanks to Simon I've got the best possible documentation;
- Mercedes DIII;
- Mercedes DIIIa;
- Oberursel UrII/LeRhone 110;

Details:
- Fokker wingnuts to fasten the sheet panels (thanks Beto for suggestion!)
- Muzzle for LMG08/15 - two types (I know that Part offers great upgrade, but sometimes only boosters are needed for etched coolers)
- workshop table
- tools and toolbox

What else? Depends on YOU!

Thanks and regards, Lukasz

Or tail stands?  I have seen them used in dioramas - not done enough research to see what was used in real time.

I like the idea of cameras, Lukasz, and also the Bentley.  I'd also like to see those in 1/48 scale.

Lukasz,

A couple thoughts..

1) For inside the cockpits: throttles, primers, seat cushions, instrument panels
2) tail skids
3) control horns

Also, one of the biggest problems I run into is how delicate the struts are on the WnW kits. I've had major problems with them breaking on the Re.8 and the Fe.2b kits. I'm not sure if there is a way to make stronger resin or even metal struts to replace these.

By the way... I LOVE your products. Keep up the amazing work.

I would love to see new control horns pre drilled or dimpled to make it easier to drill. I would also really like to see some control cable connectors that you can attach to the control horn easily with ends drilled so you can glue in the thread or turnbuckle.
Love your stuff by the way and cant wait to try your new machine guns.

I looking forward to the Fokker wingnuts, have you already started with it?

Just prepared my lathe and starting.

Thanks for propisitions! Camera, lifter, MG control gear will be done.
By the and of holidays, also Bentley should be ready.

I was thinking about Benz BzIV timing gear. It seems to be visible element of engine, and to be hardly simplify in WNW's models.

What about a trolley with 10 spoked wheels used to move Gotha bombers (and other types) around the airfield? Could sell particularly well once WNW's AEG comes out.

Here is my version of the trolley in 1/72:

I will hunt out some photos tonight

What about a British type refueling trolley? Hippo did one in 1/72 and it has an upright fuel drum:

There are a lot of great suggestions here and all would be worthwhile additions, but in my mind I would like to see starting magnetos in 1:32 scale, a lot of kits do not have the starting magneto included but it is a very important part of the aeroplane, would also be great for the scratch builder. Here are two photos but there are a lot of different types.

Drain cocks, for radiators,  oil & fuel tanks. Infuriatingly longwinded to make one by one

A complete Merc DIII & DIIIa would help breath life into Rodens Albatrossen

Spinners for Albies too. Save hours of sanding.

I think the idea put forward for control horns is an excellent one and seconds that.

Spring catches for cowls etc. cold be one long spring & separate ends to make varios types for various A/C

Always a fan of what you bring us Lucasz.

Turnbuckles, turnbuckles, turnbuckles. The Gas Patch ones cost had the price of a kit. Way too much. A few different types with drill index dimples (or holes...) for threading the "wire" at a reasonable cost would be fantastic. Every WWI aircraft needs many turnbuckles of different sizes.

Łukasz hell lot of great models in 1/48th - I know it`ll never happen - thank you WNW  :-\ :-\ ...  ;)
Turnbuckles in 1/48 and 1/32 - with a lower price than Gaspatch.
Instruments like compasses, flare guns, flares, bullet belts (empty and with ammo), cheaper anemometres.

What would be really useful would be Merc DIII / DIIIa airpump chambers with the drain valve and a hole to attach plumbing.

OK, clear.

1) control horns - help me please by some pix of horns, you want
2) MG control panel - thanks for doc - will be done
3) lifters

Curently I'm preparing fokker wingnuts and LMG08/15 muzzle - also earlier type.

Engines: Bentley and Mercedes - I'm starting from now with both engines. Bentley is extremely hard from the technological point of wiew, but maybe I'll manage :P
By the way of mercedes preparing, also airpump chamber will be done.

Turnbuckles
most wanted product, but It's a few reason I'll NOT do this
1) it would be unfair to mr. Costas from Gaspath model
2) resin is to fragile - it could broke each time you try to mount it
3) casted in white metal would have the same price, as those from Gaspatch

Thank You so much for propositions. Of course I'l save this topic, and each person who proposed particular product as a first, will btain it if only ready :)

Cheers, Lukasz

I agree with Martin and Bud we need more 1/48 stuff.  I am not into the 1/32 scale stuff since I do not have the room for a large collection in this scale, but would really like a 1/48 scale Oberursel UR.III as I wish to build a 1/48 scale Fokker E.IV and D.III as flown by Boelcke.
Title: Re: Turnbuckles
Post by: eindecker on July 18, 2014, 05:53:48 PM
That turnbuckles are the most requested should say something. Competition with Gaspatch is just part of doing business I think. Healthy. For modelers on a budget, buying turnbuckles at near half the kit price is not feasible.

I would say that resin turnbuckles combined with EZ Line would not be prone to breaking. And, small resin parts being less expensive to produce should mean that many could be made and sold reasonably to include plenty of spares.

I don't see major technical or economic problems in producing turnbuckles.

I don't see major technical or economic problems in producing turnbuckles.

If you see no technical or economic reasons for turnbuckles, why not do it yourself and offer them up to the masses at a reduced rate?

I actually admire Lukasz decision not to produce them. He clearly understands that not everything in business must mean  cut throat or nail your competitor to the wall. Thank the lord!

Goodluck to Gaspatch and to Taurus.

Why would Bob from Bob's Buckles wish his competitors well? Because I'm a modeller first and foremost. If my eyelets and cut tube help fellow modellers, then that brings me much happiness. If the day comes when modellers don't want eyelets and cut tube, so be it. I have given good service, the best price possible for a handmade product and a whole lot of pride in seeing my wee bits installed on models all over the world.  I'm a happy bunny  :)

The 3D printer will soon be as common as the print printer. When that day comes the whole industry will change and small players like me will be swallowed up and resigned to history.  That's life  ;)

I'll get off my soapbox now.
Cheers,
Bob Von Taurus-Fanboy

Let me note that I did not post to insult anyone or start an argument, nor am I advocating cutting throats or nailing anyone to a wall. I think competition is healthy, that is all. I am sorry you took it that way.

I am not interested in starting a resin casting business. I was merely noting that doing so would not be technically complicated or prohibitively expensive and that I believe reasonably priced scale turnbuckles would be a very welcome addition to WWI modeling for those of us who can't afford the Gaspatch ones, which are very nice indeed.

As one new to this forum I do not want to be perceived as argumentative or unreasonable. I was stating my opinion, not intending to insult anyone or their business. Hopefully, this is a place where differences of opinion are tolerated and discussed maturely, not like another forum I now rarely visit.

My apologies. I never meant any harm from my post. You are most welcome to make your views known and they are respected.
If someone wants to make resin turnbuckles, then I'm sure they will join the market place as more and more WNW come on stream.

The long and short of it: I respect Lukasz decision not to run with turnbuckles. If someone else fancies a pop at making them, then more power to them.

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks a lot for all of You. Most of Your propositions will be done.
Propellers bosses - I like it!

In the case of new DrI from WNWs first will be Oberursel UrII and Bentley for Voss FI.

Concerning to 48 scale... It is difficult for me to do upgrates for both (32 and 48) scales. I've a lot of pre-prepared parts for engines (wingnuts, connectors and so one), working in one scale is much faster and effective. I started from 48 and nobody was buying my engines, so I changed scale. By the way I fallen in love in WNW's models :)

Currently I'm FIGHTING with wingnuts for Fokker DVII - its chorrible small... But almost ready :)

Meanwhile I've prepared muzzle for LMG08/15

Nice work Lucasz  ;) The Oberursel would grace a Roden kit too no doubt. Theres a few it could slip nicely under the cowl of as could the Bentley.

Mind you at the hands of someone like Bertl they become models on their own. I love what you are doing.

Not trying to take away from this Great Thread here or stir anything up, BUT, Did not Bob von Bucklemeister create an Online Tutorial on "How To Make Turnbuckles"? That was to share his expertise of his craft with us mere mortals wishing to make our own turnbuckles for personal satisfaction and or economic reasons. Just Curious as I would like to see it again.... Preferably on Our "How To" Forum Here.

Have you ever considered doing the spring catches that hold German cowls together.

I know they vary in design slightly but a generic one of several varied lengths might prove popular. It's something you often see missed on some otherwise superb builds.

I must have missed something - why aren't people using the kit ones?

Personally I just thought it would good to have extras (for when you lose them or screw up drilling them out to take a wire) or to use on kits where those provided arent so good (or are broken etc)

I noted above they were on the list to be done so was just making a suggestion to do Fokker style first...
Title: Re: What do you need from TaurusModels?
Post by: jknaus on July 26, 2014, 07:26:03 AM
When I made the suggestion I stated it would be nice to have some pre drilled or dimpled. My reasoning is it would be easier for those of us with fat fingers or who have health issues that inhibit our modeling. Personally the horn is so small I can not drill it without mangling it thereby losing the horn. I currently glue the ez line to the horn and while it worksw it just does not look right. It was just a thought.

Thanks for producing valves & lifters for the BMW IIIa! I'll be ordering a set of those soon for the kit I'm about to get started on. Regarding your spark plugs, I have a few sets and have used one on a WNW Albatros. They're beautiful, but I wonder if you could put some general guidelines on your product page to help the buyer determine which style are most likely appropriate for a given power plant? I have a tough time deciding which ones to use on my builds.

And, I can only drill very small holes in tiny parts if I make my own dimple with a fat needle chucked into an old hobby knife handle.

I was just thinking of this today. A good way to start a small drill without having it wander all over or break. Like using a Center Drill or "Centering Drill.  8)

I wonder if you could put some general guidelines on your product page to help the buyer determine which style are most likely appropriate for a given power plant? I have a tough time deciding which ones to use on my builds.

Yes, I know about this...
I need to take some care to my website.... I still postpone it. I still haven't enough time. But it's necessary - it's a shame to have such webside.
So...I HEREBY PROMISE:
- finish detailed instructions,
- prepare guide for using of spark plugs (the more at least three new spark plugs will be released in nearest time :))
- put more detailed pictures of product
- put more documentation for each product

I think it will be slowly upgraded and finish up to the and of August.

Best regards, Lukasz

Hello Lukasz,

Thanks! I have no problem with your website, sometimes I just have trouble figuring out which spark plugs I should use!  ;)

I have no trouble navigating your website Lukasz, but a guide directing modelers to the correct spark plugs for the appropriate engine would be very useful, would take a bit of confusion out of making a decision.

Best wishes

Well, I've been through my Datafiles, Squad Sigs, and Kagero books and I honestly can't tell which plugs I'm seeing half the time and the other half of the time it seems like several types were interchangeable between several engine models. The only ones that appear to be a clear choice are the plugs on the Oberursel series. Maybe this one is in the same category as lozenge tape colors and Vickers cocking levers. Oi vey!  ???

Sorry to hear you are abandoning the 1/48 scale items that you first started with, I know that I for one ordered several of them from you and several more from Jadar, but it seems that with the popularity of WNW kits the last few years we have seen very little in new kits and details in 1/48. I guess the aftermarket builders are going where the most profit is and that is a good business model, I just wish you would do some more 1/48 scale items along with the multitude of new 1/32 scale sets as I think there is still a core of 1/48 scale builders who either cannot afford a large collection of WNW kits or else do not have the room to display the finished models.
Thanks
Dave

Lucasz

Have you ever considered doing the spring catches that hold German cowls together.

I know they vary in design slightly but a generic one of several varied lengths might prove popular. It's something you often see missed on some otherwise superb builds.

Keith

Now I know what You're talking about - GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will be done soon :)

Here  are Lukasz's latest plugs fitted. The wee washer on the end removes the need to make one on the leads and makes them comparatively easy to handle too - highly recommended :)

Yeah that's what it is ;)

Also on alb and OAW built D.VIIs as best I can work out (Fokker valve seems different)

Lukasz, I know we're making a lot of requests, but I would also like to see some German oxygen sets like those used on the Gotha and some Fokker D.VII's.  I understand that 1/32 scale is more profitable, but I sure would like to see those in 1/32 and 1/48.  We have all those Hippo and AZ Gotha's out there with nothing in them.  Also, there are still a lot of us building 1/48 Fokker D.VII's that would buy them if they were available.  Thanks for all you're doing for us.
Cheers,
Bud

I think Gaspatch have 1/48th oxygen units in development now.
Really?  That would be awesome.
Thought on something else, Lukasz.  How about some nice Bosch starter magnetos in 1/48 and 1/32?

Great minds think alike Bud, I suggested the starting magnetos (with photos) way back on page one but I never got a response, maybe Lukasz missed my post. Before Ron teamed up with Richard I asked him to do some starting magnetos but nothing came of that either, surely they can't be that difficult to make.

I was absent for a long time - so much work!
But I'm back. Thank You so much for suggestions. Most of this will be realized.

Currently I'm working on Fokker cowl nuts:

Almost ready - casting block prepared. But... its so small - diameter (in the thicker part) is 0.3mm. OK, it's for Bertl - he'll ménage ;D

I've started also Bentley BR2:
Cylinder base - exactly the same number of ribs as in the case of original:

crankcase:

spent about 10 days for a preparing crankcase - extremely difficult to keep geometry. Few unsuccessful attempts:

I am with Bud 100% Lukasz, I was pleasantly surprised to find the pair of them in my WNW DH2 Kit, the only one I've ever seen with them included. I've scratch built a few but having them available in your product line will be great! I really enjoy your products. Are we talking about magneto ground swithes? Sounds like a great idea! You can find them everywhere on dashboards or sitting around the cockpit.

And this one

The switch handle for all the WNW kits so far is a blob type thing that looks okay, but the switch handles seen here stand proud of the IP and have an interesting shape. I think it wouold be almost the same for all a/c. Those are the things I was wondering about althjough I wouldnt mind some switches like the two pictured in the previous answer also.

I just noticed I got the collectors item Pulsometers with the incorrect "Biritish" spelling. These things will go for big bucks in 20 years! Lol. Now I need to order again because I dare not open them. ;) ;D

THANKS!!!
This switches will be done - I like such things :)

:)Lukasz, now you need to think of something to Felixstowe.

Miecio!
I've just bought Felixtowe and W29 duelist. This time I'm gonna do this model - my wife gave me a choice: during Christmas I start REAL model (not something looking like a pinhead!!) or we going for holidays >:(. So time for a real model (felixtowe or rather H-B W29) and a lot of aftermarkets for them :)

All the best, Lukasz

Cześć Łukasz
This can at the beginning - valves and lifters for RR Eagle -I also ordered Felix :)
We have one RR Eagle in Krakow Museum

Ok, Lukasz, after going through all 11 pages, I just can't resist throwing in another suggestion.. wheel chocks...1:32, of course....I can't find any anywhere....chocks that are as well crafted as your tail stand would be outstanding. Had to ask. Anyway, I must say that you are a gift to the WWI modeling world...(however many we are)... as is this site. The happiest of holidays to you and yours....and everyone else as well. Not sure if it's possible, but...
Can you make thin slip-on textured resin Propellor covers for German Single seat fighters?
It would save painting laminations and they would add something new to the build... Here is one I made out of Bookbinding material many many mooooons ago.  8)

How about working some of your magic for the Benz Bz.III engine?  :)

Maybe some valve springs, valve rocker arms and what ever else you can offer to improve the appearance of the stock engine like you've done for the other WNW kits.

With both the WNW W.12 and W.29 kits using this same engine (and who know what else dow the road) I think it would sell. I would get at least two sets myself!

And an easy one for you - the common selector switch handles on all German aircraft (on the right hand side)

Will be done with a set of selectors :)

Hi,

how about a Messter Rheinbildner strip camera? This is the essential and defining equipment for the Rubild version of the Rumpler 'CIV' and is not provided in the WNW kit (late). This is odd since they do have the mechanical drive for this at bottom corner of part A31. Also, the kit version I'm intending to build, option 'C' (8037/17) - the one with the lovely Maybug/Cockchafer beetle (not a scarab!), is probably a Rubild as it has the propeller drive unit on the undercarriage.

I've seen photos (one in the Datafile for example) but haven't yet found dimensions.

Just a thought.

Happy new Year!

I'm pretty sure I have asked this in the past but how about a selection of starting magnetos. This is a very vital part of just about every WW1 aircraft but many kits do not have this item included, plus it would be extremely useful to the scratch builder (me ;))

Many thanks

I really like your ammunition but to tell the truth I probably wont use too many single rounds. I have been toying with the idea of cutting out the middle of the magazines and adding a new piece and then wrapping a full belt around it. So I'd like to know if you might consider selling just the belts. That way a person can buy either the set you have now with empty belt, full belt, rounds and casings, or a bag with 2 or 3 full belts but no empty belts, rounds or casings. Would that be feasible?

Hi ,
How about switches and selectors like in fokker E. (Little rotating lever beside half circle plate). It does not exist in resin either in PE (sometimes provided in PE fret like eduard's Albatros PE). I have searched many brands, not found in 1:32.
Also some dials in diferent sizes will be nice.

If you do levers for control panels please consider doing those appropriate for the AEG - the ones that are a round knob on the end - quite a few on the right side of the AEG panel needed

looking at the 360" photo's of the Caudron G.IV cockpit, you can see the engine nacelles.
there appears to be a fuel pulsometer on each nacelle, looking very much like the 1/32 scale brititisch pulsemeter. any chance that it can be scaled down to 1/48 scale to go with the CSM kit?

I placed an order for some Taurus parts a few days ago and am looking forward to using them. I'm just learning to work with resin parts so it will be fun.

A series of 1/48 scale inline and vee engines with test stand (like you did before with your Mercedes D.I).  These can be displayed alone like a miniature museum. So many that have not been done or done well.  Liberty V-12, Benz III, Fiat, Rapp, Hiero, Renault, etcetera.
Kits could also be offered without the test stand.

A 1/32 RAF 1a V8 engine would be very nice to have.

Or at least a cylinder set with separate air baffles. But the LeRhone engines need top priority. Regards, Pete in RI.

Not sure if this will be popular, but i'd love to see a range of new 1/48 Mercedes D.III engines (D.III, D.IIIa, D.IIIau, etc). These were very common engines and there are no after-market items available or in production. I can only imagine that they would be a good seller for us 1/48 types. I have your Mercedes D.I engine (now also out of production) and I can only drool at what might be possible if you turned your attention here.

Just my humble request :)

Cheers,

Brad

It's too little :) To be honesty, the market for 48 and 72 is just too small...

Well, I for one would be up for at least two dozen 1/48th Mercedes D.III/D.IIIa cylinder banks with decent looking manifolds and exhausts to replace the Eduard and Fly parts. In my opinion, that would be a major improvement since these elements are prominent features. I'm all set for 1/32nd as I've got a full shoebox of your large scale stuff in my aftermarket stash. In recent years, I've taken long pauses between builds, but I never stop buying.  ;)
