Title: First sickie report
Post by: Des on June 06, 2013, 10:12:18 PM
For the past two weeks I have had a very sore throat, it was getting worse as each day passed. My doctor had me on antibiotics but they didn't touch the sides so he had me have a Ct of my throat. They found a lump on my right tonsil and feared a tumor so I was sent to a specialist. He examined the CT and determined it was an abcsess on the right tonsil which had spread into the surrounding soft tissue. He numbed the area with an injection then used a syringe to remove over 10ml of gunk, then he used a suction device to remove more stuff, he then lanced the swollen area and let it drain for 30 minutes, he finished off with a pair of special forceps to remove any remaining infection. That was yesterday, today I am nearly back to 100%, I can eat normal meals again and am virtually pain free, the wonders of modern medicine. I am on a course of steroids and very strong antibiotics and he gave me a script for pain killers, I have not had to use the pain killers.

Des - back to normal administrator but still eating ice cream  :)

That's quite a scare my old friend. I glad to hear all's well and back to normal. Isn't it funny how things like this pop up from time to time, must be part of a Master plan to keep us on our toes. Now enjoy your ice cream and stay healthy my old friend.

Des:  Glad to hear you're ok.  Tonsillar abscesses can be impressive, and dangerous. Most of the time tonsils have atrophied enough that they pose no problems as adults. When I was doing my Comprehensive Dentistry residency in the Army, I was called late one evening from the ER to come in and treat a tonsillar abscess.  I told them "no thanks", that is an ENT doctors bailiwick.  I told them that as the oral surgery resident on call, my jurisdiction ended at the tonsillar pillars.  Turns out that the only reason I was called was the ENT doctor didn't want to get out of bed to go to ER.  Needless to say, he got called out on the carpet and had to go in anyway.  I knew I didn't want any part of "Big Red", the arteries in the back of the throat.
THe moral of the story is, don't be afraid to get a second opinion and see the specialist.

Thank you all for your kind words of support.  I went back to the specialist last Tuesday for a follow up appointment. He told me that the biopsy report showed that the infection I had was a staphylococcus strain and was extremely dangerous, he said it was life threatening, if left for a few more days it would have spread into my neck. So, I am very lucky to be here, I must thank my local GP for acting so quickly to organise the CT and to arrange an appointment to see the ENT specialist, and also the ENT specialist for treating me so quickly.
