Many thanks to Ed Boll who wrote the article I followed while building this classic Revell.
Build log here: https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=13471.0
This was huge fun. I'm glad I finally got around to doing this olde classic. This is as close as I think you can get to doing the original kit as Revell intended and be correct. All red with the Maltese crosses.
The only aftermarket used were some beautiful Model Monkey 3D printed Spandaus and I added foil belts. The guns still have missing ammo chutes as Revell intended.
This is 425/17 in its original form before they updated the crosses. Richthofen was later killed in this, his last triplane.

Some have said this a/c is 477 but I think WingNutWings has shown otherwise.

Of course this isn't a Roden or Meng but I was amazed how well done this kit was from 1957.

Wow Allan, you made short work of that. It looks really beautiful, the finish is stunning and I love how you replicated the flaked paint.

I like that rotary! Great model, Allan...Dan
-
Great to see how they'd polish up - exactly what I would have been aiming for when I first had a go at building one of these :)

It’s almost impossible to believe that this kit is from 1957. I‘ve seen it built many times but it never looked as great as your build. Amazing work!
Andreas

Just seen this on Britmodeller funny enough, Allan -
Absolutely brilliant job on the Revell classic kit. Your work demonstrates that these old kits still have life in them and rewards the modeller who puts in the effort.
Regards
Dave

Beautiful work Allan, you've really shown what can be done with this kit. Stuning work!
-
Beautiful work on this venerable old bird. I remember building this kit as a kid back around 30 years or so ago.
What shade did you use for the red? It looks rather striking.
Cheers!

These are superb results with this venerable kit. Congratulations!
-
Nice modelling techniques and skill applied to and ancient old warhorse with great results.
You must tackle a new state of the art Eduard or Wingnut model now to do full justice to your abilities.
Great stuff 👍

Wow, that is an astonishing result on such a venerable old kit. You really brought it right up to date. Congratulations!
-
Thanks everyone for the kind words.
Someday I will do the other Revell 2 (3) 1/28 kits but they are big and shelf space is limited for the moment.
The red I used is Vallejo 71.102 and seems very close to what is the "average truth" on the www of the actual color of Richthofen red.
The camera brightened up the red a bit, the truest red colors would be the two close up engine shots.
Thanks again.

Lovely work on the ol' gal !
Ed

What a great build and finish!!
Steve
-
Thanks Ed and Steve.
Makes me rethinking not building the Camel now....
-
Beautiful work Allan. Red triplanes are definitely not my favorite WWI subject but you have done this one to an exceptional level.
-
VERY nicely done. I like it a lot.
Paul
-
Well that turned out very nicely, Alan - you've done such a beautiful job on an ancient kit. Love the little touches around the cockpit...essential detail when making 425/17 ;)
Cheers,
Gary

Lovely work on the ol' gal !
Ed
I agree 100% with My Amigo! Lovely and might even inspire Me to work on the Hobby Craft copy of this kit!

Paul at ModelCeller sent along this magnificent pre-production MvR figure sculpted by Mike Good to go along with my olde Revell 1/28 tripe.
CLEARLY, I'm not a figure painter....I love the figure and blends perfectly with the old kit. Just wish my figure skills we not SO rusty...

Looks great Allan! A perfect accoutrement for your tripe.
By the way, your figure painting is light years advanced of mine!
-
Hi Allan,
You did a nice job. Looks great next to your build. I'm pleased you like the figure.
...65 years in the making =) !LOL! The kit was released in 1957 and no one has ever done any 1/28 figures to go with these kits. That is, until now of course =). We (Model Cellar) will be releasing this 1/28 Manfred soon.
regards,
Paul
-
Love the figure! Nice job, Allan. Looks great alongside your model.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Thanks all. I do love the figure but I didn't do it justice. The clothing and coat, ok. I choked on the face, he looks anemic. I have a figure book on the way, I'll fix him up in the future and do better.
-
...I choked on the face, he looks anemic...
;D I look like that 24/7
No, just kidding. You did a great job on both the aircraft and the pilot.
