Wingnuts is now officially taking pre orders for its two Halberstadt kits due in late November/ early December.

and thus all controversy over the Halberstadt price is laid to rest.
the space between the announcement and pre-orders was very short on this one!
that newsletter also mentioned more WWI kits in development that they're not quite ready to announce yet...

Ah! So I may restart looking forward to a Breguet XIV and some Airco DH.4?!

WNW must be laughing out loud at all of this CSI work. :)

If they put a Dr.I datafile in that stack, they would certainly have stirred the pot! :-)
BTW, instructions on the Cl.IIs are up also.

i think the fact that they DIDN'T put a Dr.I datafile in the stack PROVES that the DR.I is the next release

They are lovely, but until some one points me towards a good tutoriol on how to do the scumble look, it is a no go for me.
What I mostly want to know is what are the underlaying colours and what is stippled on top, is that a single colour or is it multiple colours randomly placed? or specific colours matched (a specific top colour for a given unlerlaying colour)?
anybody now the answer or know where to look?
many thanks, Hidde

When I recall it properly, there seem to have been hand painted „lozenges“ in various colors that were stippled over with a stiff brush/sponge in a uniform color. The WDF includes the hypothesis that different solvents could have been in use so that the colors repelled each other. The fuselage in Krakow shows this technique. It might be worked over in the 1930ies, but in my view it matches the shape on the photos quite well

I expect WNW will add a Hints & Tips section to the Halberstadt listings showing how to do the camo stippling. Much like they did with the Stahltaube's cowling "scales".

From a modelers perspective, the pic looks like an overall light color fuselage with sponge or stipple work applied in controlled areas.
For example hard mask the surrounding area, then apply the effect, then mask that off and do a different color panel.
Wont be easy.
-
true. Camouflage colors speckled onto a shellack surface (no additional speckling over it). I checked WDF 27 and 157. Maybe some carefully cut to shape sponge brushes will do the job. :)
otherwise maybe an aftermarket producer will release a decal sheet similar to these Mirage Hobby had printed for their 1/48 Halberstadt Cl.II:
Last hope: in one of the Halberstadt boxes there are markings for the 'candy sticked' 5720/17, named "Martha" and "Else", it is yellow-black or red striped overall -- so no camouflage speckles visible.

The instructions are up at the WNW site Andreas.
I'm sure there will be some artistic license on this effect also, similar to wood grain effect.
-
Cool stuff -getting decals like that aligned and trimmeld properly won't be easy as well I guess. Interesting challenge for sure!

Model images by Bugan are now up on the WNW site. Looking very good. :)

Pics of the finished kits are now up on the WW site, both look awesome, the flame pattern kite is quite stunning! I built the Blue Max 1/72 kit
back in the 90's in these markings, still sitting in my display cabinet. This new kit is a such a massive leap forward, who'd have thought it, a 1/32 scale Halberstadt?!
Now, will it be available for Christmas...?

I hope so, I am on the nice list and cannot be good too much after Christmas..... ;D ;D

If you're going to SMW in Telford, Birmingham this weekend, they'll have limited stocks of the Halberstadt models up for grabs,

The WnW-letter I received today clearly read like no Halberstdts on sale, Mike.
-
Sorry Guys - I misread it - on display but NOT for sale.
It's the new model that'll be on view just on the Sunday.

I have read other modelers speak to this as well, which surprises me.
To be honest, it doesn't seem like a very hard effect to emulate with a pouncing technique.
The trick will be doing some experimenting to figure out what tool is the right one for the job. Sponge? Wadded up plastic wrap? Brush with short, stiff bristles? Brush with longer, more flexible bristles?
All of those things can produce effects similar to what we are looking for with these airplanes.

When WNW sold two-seaters for $79 - with free shipping - we were very, very spoiled indeed.

I got my email today: My Halberstadts are on their way... oh, I can hardly wait...

I see, I was not the only unpatient European ;)
My Duellists set is on the way, too. :)

Placed my order for both with Wheels and Wings Hobby , now just sit and wait ...

Terri,
Confirm W&W have them in stock already? That was was really fast compared to the last few releases. Sounds like it's order time! :) :) :)
Cheers,
Lance

Lance , on WNW web site they are no longer listed as per-order . Less this is an error and it could be on my part . But I don't want to miss out on these so I'm placing my order now . I have the Sopwith Triplane on oer-order with them and that should be in the next batch in this Friday .

Thanks for the info Terri, I've preordered from them in the past, it's a pleasure to deal with the shop!

Just got back to this forum after a long time away. I noticed some discussion/queries about doing the scumble camouflage earlier in this thread and have found a good technique (perhaps prototypical?): I bought a splatter cap for my H-S Evolution airbrush (with the 0.25 mm needle) and it works very well with Bulldog paints and Schminke inks - I'm doing a WNW DFW C.V (Halb) in this scheme. When I get the beast finished I'll post some images - just got the challenge of doing the diagonal lozenge with some Aviattic light 5-colour lozenge.
Cheers,

Has anybody landed one of the kits yet? I am curious to see the new linen effect lozenge decals look in person. They do look nice in the photos. Do wish they included decals for the fuselage lozenge, even if they didn’t include stipple over paint.
