I'm submitting WNW's Sopwith Triplane for the Des Memorial Group build.
I will attempt to make a half decent representation of Collishaw's bird. Can I do it it within the 6 month time frame? It won't be for lack of trying!
Pictures to come.
von Buckle :)

Have you finished it yet Bob?

Great choice von Tripe Cobbler! Another of my personal Kit favorites. I did it up in his Black Maria twin gun version, N533 and have a second Kit under lock and key in the Stash for another day. I'm really looking forward to seeing you apply your magic to this beauty!
Cheers,
Lance

Looking forward to you being back at the bench von Buckles!

Hello Men!
Thanks for dropping by.
I may or maynot reconstruct a new IP using the spare in the kit.
IP sanded until the instruments fell off ;D and then placed on veneer.

That veneer panel is a really neat trick von B. I may have to "borrow" that in future.

In the process of sanding I altered my finger print. I couldn't sign into (via fingerprint) my phone for two days ;D
I'm working on the pulsometer at the mo. Stretched some clear sprue for the sight glass, just need to cut 'n shape to fit.
It's good 'ere!

Don't tell that the public authorities, or modelling will be forbidden!

You can add brass pipes to the clear sprue, as I did in 1/48:

Great progress to date my old friend. The Tripe Hound has always been my favorite RNAS fighter. The best of luck to you in the GB.

Lovely start, Bob! And some really good tips.... I'm going to enjoy this build!

Thanks Guys!
I have spent a couple of evenings just cutting bits of the sprue-gates and cleaning up seams. It's boring, but a must for me.
Dry fit! Everything is moving along at a nice pace. So, slow and steady wins the race... :D

Custom Masks? Should be Awesome!
RAGIII

Oh very nice! Haven't seen that before :)
Mark

Another very cool idea from von B's desk!

That’s cheating!
Guy

Another way to do this would have been the way you mask a WWI Japanese green house canopy...mask the horizontal frames first, spray and then mask and spray the verticals.
The masks are neat though, and good choice for a build.
Ryan
-
Great ideas, there Bob! I shall follow with anticipation... Regards, Marc
-
Some post shading on the fuselage sides will add some depth. I will probably use a very thin khaki for the job.
Engine complete barring ignition leads. Still debating if I should bother TBH.
Seat cushion needs a glaze to finish.
Cabane struts and framing will receive a Tamiya clear yellow. Bit and bobs to be added and picked out accordingly.
I'm enjoying this build immensely. I've allowed myself to make mistakes without beating my head against the bench, learn from those mistakes and move on. Life is far to short to stress. ;)
I'm sorry I haven't had time to chime in on all the other builds. I'm way to busy twisting wire at the moment, but know that I'm keeping an eye on your progress. :o
Cheers!

Bob, what colors did you use for the leather effect on the seat?
Ryan
Hi Ryan,
The seat cushion was painted 'leather warm shadow' from Lifecolor. When dry I buffed with a q-tip. Then dry brushed with Citadel 'Cadian Fleshtone' to finish. I will probably apply a thin coat of the lifecolor to help tone it down.
Thanks for all the nice comments ;)
Currently working on the woody bits in the cockpit :o

Thanks for looking in and commenting, always appreciated :)
More news on the Tripe.
Lost one of the floor boards to the Carpet Monster. Scratched one from veneer, liked it, tossed remaining plastic one in the bin and made another! The attachment points were made by chucking 0.4mm brass tube in a pin vise and gently scored on the veneer using light circular motions. It wasn't Rocket Science, but it was rewarding and it got me out of a Carpet Devil hole!
A wee bit of dry fitting. Making sure the tolerances don't impede my progress.
The rudder bar has been wired. Leaving the glue to set-up over night. :o
(https://i.ibb.co/njykGg7/rudder-bar.jpg)
I chose not to scratch the panel and went with the kit part.
I picked out the bezels with this black paint.
We've all been there. One slip and the bezel becomes a dinner plate. Not so with this paint. If you creep onto the panel, you can clean up with a damp brush and go again...and again... and... don't ask! A Klear coat will be sprayed over the IP to fix the paint in place. Instruments will be picked out, kleared again and then decals.
Well, that's me for now, but I've got to say this...I'm loving being part of this group build.
Cheers,
BvB ;)
-
Great update!! Is the Aqua Line paint a gamers line?
Steve
-
Hi Steve,
The paint is made by Wilder
I think they're meant to be used for weathering in a similar way to oils, but water based.
The good thing about them is the fact you can rework the paint even if it's dried on.
This is my first time in using them, so I'm learning on the job 8)
Cheers,

Outstanding work on the floorboards Bob. Love the panel also. I will have to check for availability / who carries the paint in the US.

Hello All,
Not much to report other than the ManCave is near completion.

Great setup, Bob. Lots of room for expansion: paint, pigment, glue (several kinds, of course), tweezers, scalpels, craft knives, masking tape (several kinds, of course), clamps, razor saws, magnifying glass, hemostats, sprue cutters, files, reamers, coffee maker, radio, small TV...umm...did I mention Paint?? ???
Looks great, and I'm sure that it will increase your skill level at least 20%. Enjoy greatly! 8)

I'm fine with Albion Alloys here in the UK, but it would be nice if Griffon got off their butts and started reproducing their 0.5mm tube.

Hi Bob
Griffon Model tube (0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) is available from BNA Model World in Australia. I have ordered from them several times before and they are really good and very reliable. The prices are also very good I think - AU$7.50 for a tube package. I have just ordered some Griffon tube from them hopefully there is lots left!

PC10 sprayed over a Dark Yellow/Desert Yellow base.

Hey Lance, these plastic spoons come in packs of 50 and all for the cost busting sum of one solitary £.

Yes indeed about the PC10. I know one can argue forever in pointless fashion about it, but I like the warmth you've put into it. As the builder of the other Triplane in the group build I confess I simply used some Misterkit PC10 I had, which is distinctly colder.
By the way, I'm really glad to see this build going so well, it kind of inspired me to persevere with my humbler effort.
Impressed with so any things... Now staring with fascination at the work you've done on those inspection windows, especially the ones Roden didn't include on their Triplane kit! :)

Note to self. Buy some excellent quality cotton gloves for handling the kit during the finishing stages. I'm getting tired of scrubbing off finger prints :-X :-X

superb build, taking notes.
regarding the gloves, i was going to buy animation painting gloves (like for old school animation not CGI) but the $hipping out$ide the U$ was ridiculou$. so i found these on amazon. same basic idea and a lot cheaper.

I spent 3 hours on her tonight. Drilling holes for eyelets, dry fitting...and some! A wee tiny piece of rigging on the underside of the engine cowl <The V >
Two or three (I can't even remember how many, perhaps the carpet monster will remind me in the morning :o ) well prepared lengths of ultra fine ModelKasten metal rigging line pinged off into never never land before I nailed it! A job that should of taken 10 minutes took 90! I must be a saint ;D

I'm really glad the Group Build After Build is motivating GB entrants to stay with it. Well, you wanted updates and I'm all obliging to give them.
So, today I'm doubling down!
Two wings nailed on. Work will follow on small items. Mainly the eyelets that went PING! Painting Prop with numerous shades of oil paint and touch ups.
I can see a speck of light at the end of the tunnel and I'm hopeful the old girl will be completed before the end of October, nay, SHE will be going to the Prom come the end of October.

How are you going to do the rigging that pass through the leading edge of the middle wing ?
Terri
Hi Terri,
Wingnuts have made this part super easy. There is a cutout on the leading edge for the wires to pass over. Once installed I will need to fashion a piece of nano fabric to close off said cutout.
All being well I should have Mr Triple finished in time! YAY!

Prop in place. Wheels installed.
I'm happy with the tone of wood achieved.
Various shades of oil dragged over a desert yellow base coat.
Tamiya clear orange thinned with Johnson's Klear was sprayed in 3 wet coats. Tiny decals added. Job done!
Rigging, touch-ups and various coats of clear coat ranging from satin to flat will finish off my tribute to, Des. I have 1 month! No time for complacency :o :)

P.S. The black tailplane and the underside C is just my wishful opinion. But opinions means little... Facts are King! Sadly, there are not enough facts regarding Collishaw's 2 victory 'Black Maria.' So take my rendition with a pinch of salt. I could be near the mark, but chances are I'm probably a galaxy away ;D

i'm hoping it's an annual thing.
my main memory of Des was that no question i pinged him with was too stoopid. and believe me some of my noob questions were breathtakingly stoopid. Des was a straight shooter but generous to a fault.

Thank you, Stephen. ;)
I had a good tail wind pushing me over the line.
The idea for the base came to me a couple of days before the deadline. I just primed the MDF base with Halfords Grey primer and then sprayed a top coat of black stove paint. The lettering was cut using my vinyl cutter, placed and then finished off with Gold gild paste, which was applied with q-tips. I whipped the mask off thinking there would be bleed, but luckily the Gods were with me. I'm very happy with the outcome.
Cheers,
Bob :)
