Wood decal questions
« on: August 11, 2013, 06:23:45 PM »
Hello all,

Just thinking ahead to a future project..

Does anyone have any experience of the wood & wire or HGW or Uschi van der Rosten wood decals? Generally, the examples I've seen (to my eye) look a little too much like wood and not plywood (in comparison with period photos on, say, an albatros for example?)

I'd be interested to hear of anyone's experiences/build logs/thoughts on these or any similar products?

Thanks for looking

Guy

I have not used either, but both decals look very convincing on the completed models I have seen. I suggest scrolling through the completed models to view examples. One I can name off the top of my head is miamingler's Lloyd C.V. I think Coyotemagic used some on his Albatros C.III too.

Hi RB,

That's great, just what I needed to know.. I wanted a very pale plywood look and not the standard 'orange' wood so I guess it's the Uschi ones..

Have you any photos/threads with them in action?

Thanks

Alex (Uschi) has a new product that promises to be even more plywood-y.

This is not as pale as you want, but I think illustrates how transparent these Uschi decals are:

Yep, thanks Bo..

I've just been looking at that.. Which is leading me towards an Albatros, it was either that or the Roland. But it may still depend on what W&W are bringing out in aircraft specific lozenge as it's my new favourite thing.

I believe W&W are doing wood decaling too, not 100% sure but. If not I'd be surprised. Uschi's does look rather exceptional though.

Guy, I know you're more interested in 1/32 scale, but this is what the 1/48 HGW cookie cutter set looks like on the model.  I went with the translucent style and used preshading and filters for the desired effect.  I was pretty happy with them.

The only Uschi decals I've use so far is the first generation stuff.  Used it on my Albatros C.III.

They went on beautifully and, with a dark filter, looked the part.  My last two "wood" fuselages were done with oils, but I plan on doing an Albatros D type soon using Uschi's newest offering.  I really like the stuff.
Cheers,
Bud

One final comment-- my noob mistake with the Uschi decals was not compensating enough for the effects of future and the decals, both having a darkening effect. My fuselage ended up being about 10% darker than I intended. It doesn't bother me; it looks fantastic to me in RL, but it's not really correct. Live and learn...

I think it's perfect, Bo!  Doesn't take long for the harsh conditions of war to darken wood.

Bud - beautiful models! And the wood finish looks spot on..

Bo - yes, I tend to get caught out with that.. I never seem to learn that lesson - even on the fuselage of my Fokker - I deliberately made it a lot lighter than I intended for that reason, but the Future/Klear has once again darkened it further than I'd like..

Thanks for the input though..
