Thanks a lot, gentlemen… for the warm welcome (again)….

So here we go.
Here’s the start. Firstly I took a couple of photocopies of the drawings in the Aircraft Archive book. I will be also using the Windsock Datafile as the main source for finer details and photos.

I used a sheet of a plastic transparency (meant for old overhead projectors in a classroom) for the wing surfaces. I taped it on top of the drawings, marked the necessary lines and marks for the ailerons etc. with a thin permanent marker. Then l scribed the ribs with a ballpoint pen, using moderate pressure. A decent ruler and good concentration helps a lot. I also had a soft cardboard sheet under it all, to allow the plastic to be scribed well. As the C.V is fully camouflaged, I do not have to worry about translucence of the wings and any markings or pen lines in the inside of the surfaces do not cause any real problems.

After that I did the same for lower wings. I carefully scribed the leading edges too and folded the plastic sheet to form the whole wing.

I also did the horizontal tail surfaces the same way. The elevators and tailplane taper to almost every direction and the thickness changes a lot spanwise and chordwise. So I have to make a rather large pieces for the surfaces, so I can get them sit well on the sanded balsa cores and there has to be enough material for the cutting and sanding to correct shape.

So that’s it for a start. Next up I will make the balsa cores and do some careful contact-gluing. More after the weekend!

A forum member was kind enough to provide masks for my Roden SPAD, but I'm worried for my Sopwith One and a Half Strutter...

Can you obtain some of the Aviattic decals for your Strutter?

Apologies to all for the thread drift.

Again, this is just amazing work! A question: why sterling silver? Is it because of it being more malleable?

End of Enoch
AB Enoch Thulins Aeroplanfabrik became Sweden's first aircraft manufacturer in 1914.  Beginning with license-built Bleriot, Morane-Saulnier and Albatros aircraft, the company soon started producing Dr. Thulin's own designs with the introduction of his Model E.  This was followed by other types, some of which were produced during the Great War.   Not long after the armistice Thulin himself set a national altitude record in his personal Morane-esque K3 monoplane.  One week before today's article went to press, Thulin was again piloting this plane when lost control in a dive, dashing the pioneer aviator to his demise.
(from the Abergavenny Chronicle, 23 May 1919):

I hope that you can get a strong wing to fuselage joint.

Thanks Stephen! I had to walk away from it a couple of times, but I finally managed to get it sorted.  :-\

I had been worrying about how to attach the wings and needed a solution that wouldn't flex. I thickened up the bulkhead between the cockpits and drilled some holes through the sides of the fuselage to accept some hidden wing spars. The spars are flattened sterling silver wire with a scribe line down each side so they resemble I-beams. A jeweller's saw was used to cut some corresponding slots in the wings, with a couple of larger holes to act as reservoirs when I backfilled the spars with water-thin CA glue.

Setting up each wing so that they plugged in at the correct dihedral and camber every time was delicate work, but it will simplify things a great deal later on. Some brass tube was flushed in at each wingtip too, to provide location points for the rigging pylons when the time comes.

Glad that's out of the way! Next job is another prime and sand, then to have a look at doing the wing ribs.

And with a coat of Mr Surfacer to see how it looks... 0_0
