Hello everybody,
the Eindecker is resting in the cabinet, the drawings for the Camel are done, sot it is time to start working. :)
The subject will be W. G. Barker's Camel B6313 in its final layout from Autumn 1918
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4778/40748104302_88157a6c9a_z.jpg)
After taking a closer look at this particular machine I went: "Holy ..., what subject have I chosen again?"
This machine namely had not only most of the decking before the cockpit removed...
... but also the fabric on the centre section of the upper wing. This means basically the whole cockpit interior will be very well visible, so I will have to create something resebling this:
Ehm, yeah, this will be a big portion of fun and a few sleepless nights, I guess. Currently I am thinking about vacuformed fuselage halves and cockpit interior to be inserted assembled from the front. But will see what other ideas I might get. Should you have any suggestions, many thanks for any input!
Cheers
Ondra

Gee Ondra, I know that you and I like a challenge when we choose a subject to model, but......... Sorry at the moment I have no suggestions, but I will certainly be following along to see how you do get over some of the practical problems that await.
Stephen.
-
Though it may hurt my (mental) eyes, I'll be sure to follow along.
-
As always I am sure you will get this figured out and work wonders!
RAGIII

Getting popcorn before the show starts... ;D

This is going to be a classic! I'll be following closely and cheering you on Ondra!
Cheers,

Best of luck on this challenging build. I'm sure that you're up to the task! 8)

Wow, finished one and the next is on the desk, will be very interesting.

Many thanks for your encouraging comments and support, Stephen, Gaz, Rick, Juan, Lance, Trackpad and Manni! I will do my best not to disappoint your expectations.
This weekend I would like to start experimenting with fuselage vacuforming so my question to the forumites - anyone here having experience with this technology?
So far I took the "mathematic" approach and rescaled the fuselage drawings for use of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 mm styrene. I guess I will start experimenting with the 0.75 mm and see how it goes. I will glue the drawing on a piece of 0.5 mm styrene and then cut it out. Once glued together and the gaps filled with putty, this should give me a proper core for the vacuforming.

Cheers
Ondra
-
Time to cut some styrene. :)
I started working on the core for the vacuforming, the idea is to fill the gaps with black miliputt, which should give me a good guide while removing the excesses (the contrast between white styrene and black miliputt). New technology for me, so this will be a trial-failure learning.

Your framework looks good Ondra. I am looking forward to seeing how the milliput works for you. Knowing your skills I am sure all will go well!
RAGIII

You are doing a great job, ondra. I do have a DIY vacuform machine and vacuformed some parts yet. I am far from being an expert but I'll help as much as I can!
Andreas

Great subject, this is a very promising project. Following with great interest.

Watching closely. Barker's one of my favorites, and this is the single most successful airframe of the entire war; 46 of Billy Barker's 50 kills were achieved in it. The other 4 were achieved in his VC Snipe (in my queue thanks to WNW and Pheon).
I have no idea how you do what you do in such a tiny scale, but it makes for damn fine viewing.
-
Amazing!
-
Many thanks for your support, Rick, Andreas, Giuseppe, Jeff and Gazza!
Morning bit of work done, gaps filled with black Miliputt and roughly sanded to shape. There will be a few corrections necessary, but all in all it looks acceptable.

Outstanding Ondra! That was really fast work and is looking great!
RAGIII

As usual, you are the master of the tiny scale....
-
That was quick! Miss a couple of days and the model is beginning to look like an aeroplane already!
Stephen.

beautifully done! it's truly taken the shape of a camel fuselage!

As usual, you are the master of the tiny scale....
+1 -nothing to add to that! :)

Many thanks for your nice and supportive comments, Rick, Juan, Stephen, Ian and Jeroen! They are highly appreciated.
Today I moved on by turning the core for the cowling and preparing all the parts for vacuforming. Next weekend I will start experimenting, so keep you fingers crossed for me. :)

Again I must say OUTSTANDING Ondra!
RAGIII
-
Many thanks for your support, dear friend!
I started working on the fuselage, eventually I decided to change the approach a bit. Made of two vacuformed halves, the fuselage would not be rigid enough, so the rear part will be made of solid plastic. Quite surprisingly, vacuforming went well on the first attempt already, so these are the parts I got for the front fuselage:
The rear part is under construction now, the gaps will be filled with styrene:
And this is what it looks like when put together with a piece of white tac:
The engine cowling will be vacuformed as well, this where I stand now:

I also started working on the wings, a lot of sanding ahead of me.

Andreas

Many thanks for your nice and supportive comments, Rick, Frank, Gazza and Andreas! They are a great encouragement for me.
I filled the fuselage with green styrene and sanded it to rough shape, so this is where I stand now. Next up will be primer and corrections, tomorrow I would like to start working on the interior frame.

And when I had the file in the hand already, I also sanded the wings to the airfoil shape, the last picture pretty much gives away how "big" the Camel will be. :)

Many thanks for following the build and leaving such nice comments, Gregory and Gazza, glad to have you on board!
Today I started working on the interior. I made a drawing of the cockpit sides in scale:
Then I fixated the drawing to a piece of aluminium with Tamiya tape, to keep it stable and prevent it from crooking:
Afterwards I started glueing evergreen profiles cut to the desired length to the respective spots with small drops of CA. Then I glued the joints with Tamiya extra thin to weld them together. At the end I got this:
Now the parts have been soaked in debonder, which should dissolve the CA and loosen the parts from the paper. Will see tomorrow, how it works out.
Cheers
Ondra
-
Magnificently tiny.
-
The wings are looking awesome Ondra! Your method for creating the side frames is extremely creative!
RAGIII
-
Many thanks for your support, krow and Rick!
I am glad to say the method with dissolving CA has worked, the parts separated from the paper without any problem.
Today I made a fit test using white glue and for the first attempt it is acceptable.

Next up are some parts for the cockpit (seat, gas tank, dashboard etc.)
Cheers
Ondra

Looks terrific Ondra!
RAGIII
-
Many thanks, dear friend, I really appreciate you following the build!
I want to make sure that my drawings are correct and that all interior parts will fit in, therefore I started working on the main components.
First is the seat, in Camel's case wicker seat. I decided to use a very fine mesh I got years ago from a friend of mine.
Assembly was not as easy as I would have hoped, but eventually I got an acceptable result.
This what the seat and tank look like in the interior (not glued), so far so good.

Woooof. Simply amazing what you are doing, Ondra! You are surprising us with every post.
Andreas

Even considering an interior in 1/144! I'm totally blown away. That wicker seat is beautiful!
Gaz

It's excellent progress on that 1/72 Camel. However, what I really want to know... Are your hands really that huge, or did you Photoshop that???
-
Ondra, those side frames and the seat are truly astounding!
-
Outstanding work, Ondra. The Seat is the best. I am always impressed, when you start a new build. Would love to see what you can do with a kit in lager scale. Probably it could fly.
Bye,
Manni

Rick, Andreas, Gazza, Jeff, Ian and Manni, thank you very much for your nice comments and for following the build!
Today I was mainly playing around with small parts for the cockpit, I will add a few details to the machine guns and make the rudder pedals tomorrow. Today my hands are shaky already. :)

Outstanding Ondra! Where did you get the Giant Tools for the Photo?
RAGIII
-
Outstanding, have to agree with Rick and ask again about the giant hands. Beautiful my friend.

As always Ondra, I have to join the chorus here and sing your praises for such spectacular work in this "beyond Braille" Scale. I again cannot believe the detail you can produce in these tiny beauties, the seat and throttle quadrant alone say it all!
Cheers,
Lance

A wicker seat in 1:144... If you wouldn't show photos, no one could believe that....
Andreas
-
Many thanks for following the build and for your nice comments, Rick, Juan, Lance and Andreas!
I started painting the interior, this time I decided not to use oil paints. I only gave the parts a coat of Drooling Bulldog Cream Yellow which I afterwards coated with Drooling Bulldog wood stain (Birch for the frame, Mahogany for the cockpit sides). I think the effect looks acceptable, very little will be visible eventually.

I also made a new steering stick, as the previous one was too robust (and on top of it, I lost it. :) )
The seat and seat cushion have been painted and are ready for the belt and weathering.

The wood on the instrument panel was also made the same method as interior frame, I just used a thinner layer of the wood stain to get a slightly different wood tone.
The fuel tank got a coat of Drooling Bulldog Gunship Grey and is ready for wash now.

Many thanks for your nice commentsk, Giuseppe and Rick, they are highly appreciated!
The seat belts are in place and weathered, they look quite ok.

All components are inside the cockpit now, so the last thing to do was the rigging, fortunately it was rather easy. I had to disassemble the machine guns and glue the rear parts in place already. Once the fuselage is closed, I will have to glue the front parts in.

Many thanks for your nice comments, Rick and Gazza!
This part of build is actually rather boring, as it contains many many rounds of filling and sanding, however, I have to say to me it is one of the most pleasant ones. Watching her taking the shape of the Camel is very satisfactory to me.
To be very honest, my engineering skills still leave a lot to be desired, so a bit of putty was needed. :)

Ondra, your talent in miniatures never stops amazing me. J :D
-
I have missed out on this recently Ondra - not sure how. Your skills in this scale never cease to amaze me - the incredible detail that you get into the cockpit is stunning. The interior colours also really look the part. Never mind your engineering skills - I am a dab hand with the filler too - because I need to be and I usually work in a larger scale to you!
Stephen.
-
Seatbelts... in 1/144...
>brain implodes<

Ondra,
Trying to build a three dimensional shape with ribs and frames is very difficult in scale. I was just thinking about how difficult it is to sand tiny parts.
Fuselage and wheels impress!
Gaz

Wow Ondra, Looking great as always!
RAGIII

Many thanks for your support and your generous comments, Juan, Stephen, Jeff, Gaz, Rick and Bud, they are highly appreciated.
Before I move on with the fuselage, I need to resolve one puzzle about the cockpit decking.
The decking was for a large part removed on this aircraft, as the WNW instructions show:
Still, I am not able to create a clear picture what the decking looked like and did not find the answer in the instructions.
Would any of you have a picture answering this question?
I presume the layout of the decking should be the same as e. g. McLaren's machine, which can be very well seen in Lance's build, but I am really not sure about this.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
Cheers
Ondra
-
After a lot of pain, struggle and dirty words, I have finally managed to fit the lower wings to the fuselage. Unfortunately the fuselage is a bit wider than it should be, so adjustments will be necessary to the wings.
The good news is, most of the cockpit details will remain visible.
The Camel will be the same story as the S.E.5a, so I will basically build it twice - in the first step I will only assemble it to make sure the struts have the correct length, then disassemble and paint.
Cheers
Ondra

Brilliant work as always Ondra.

I know that practice is supposed to make perfect Ondra, and that you have had a lot of practice in this scale, but that model looks as near perfect as it will ever get to me!

As usual Ondra, words cannot express how impressive your work is. I take my hat off to the man with the giant hands. LOL

Just amazing, Ondra. My carpet monster claims bigger parts than your entire plane... almost!
Gaz

I used to think that 1/72 was the ...noseeum scale... this is a whole different level !!!

I don't think I looked at this before. I have now. Incredible! Astonishing! I can't believe the detail you are achieving at this scale. It does my head in.
I'll keep watching from now on.

Many thanks to all of you for your nice comments, they are highly appreciated!
The build pace slowed down quite a lot due to several aspects, among others because I entered the most painful part of the build, i. e. making the struts and fitting the upper wing.
I did not want to get this wrong so I took time to think about the apropriate method. At the end of the day I decided for the rather primitive option and made this jig out of styrene sheet. :)

Even with a large scale kit, this is the most challenging part of building a Camel. Just getting the dihedral right is tricky, but you've done it. Very impressive, Ondra.

That Ondra is exactly what I would have done - simple but very effective. This is going to be yet another gem when completed.
Stephen.

Great Jig!

Perfect solution for this Problem. Again a great lession in smallest scale modelling. Great, Ondra!
Best regards
Andreas

Your Camel is really coming together beautifully, ondra! The wings are the toughest part, and yours look exceptional, especially challenging with that cutout!
-
Many thanks for your supportive comments, Rick, Bud, Stephen, Gazza, Andreas and Ian! They are highly appreciated.
I have to apologize for the long break since the previous update, various issues in personal and work life were keeping me off the workbench.
Nevertheless, I was slowly working on the adjustments to the jig and I seem to be on the right path now. Today I made the centre struts and put them into position. On the fuselage they have been pressed into small pieces of miliput, which should me the right position where to glue them during final assembly.

Great to see an update on your beautiful little Camel Ondra. It looks as though you are literally getting it together 8)
RAGIII

More wonderful work in the micro-scale. That jig looks very effective: as I suggested simple ideas are often the best. I really admire your skill with this Camel because the wings are not parallel and are difficult enough to get right in the larger scales. You have done this in the micro-scale and as usual made it look so easy!
PS I know that it was not easy.....
Stephen.
-
Been missing you Ondra! Glad to see you back!
Gaz
-
Great to see you back on this one ondra! And I really like what I see! Like Stephen already said: There are no lines to orientate when attaching the upper wing on a Camel. So my deepest respect for doing that procedure so flawlessly.
Best regards

Many thanks to all of you for your supportive and generous comments, they are highly appreciated!
I continued the work on the fuselage and adjusted the cockpit opening to the shape which seems about right to my eye. I am glad I invested the effort into the interior details, as eventually a lot will remain visible.

I also started working on the upper side of the fuselage.

As the Camel featured small inspection windows on the leading edges, I want to represent them on my model too.
I used paper templates to find the right position on the wings:
Afterwards I carved the holes with this tool which Sergey Mertens made for me. Many thanks for that, a great jig!
The next step was black paint and inserting 0,6 mm diameter circles made of aluminium sheet.

The glass was added by using photopolymeric glue, Will see what it will look like once sanded and polished.

Many thanks for following the build and for leaving such generous and supportive comments, Frank, Andreas, Stephen, Juan and Nigel!
The build pace slowed down again due to various reasons, but from time to time I found an hour or half to continue with filling and sanding.
The fuselage looks close to acceptable now, so hopefully one last shot of primer will be needed and I can start with the scribing.

The wings look acceptable too, I am rather satisfied with the way the pulley inspection windows turned out. Some touch ups will be necessary on the centre section cut outs, though.
Next up will be the wing ribs, so I made this little jig to help me separate the masks from the paper, hopefully it will work as intended. Testing will start this weekend.

Excellent progress, Ondra! I'm currently rigging my AEG C.IV and having a hell of a time seeing the eyelets. In 1/48 scale! I can't begin to imagine doing those inspection ports in 1/144 scale! As I've said before, you're a wizard!

Many thanks for following the build and for your generous comment, old friend!
The pace of the build slowed down quite significantly due to various reasons, one of them being that I struggled big time with the wing ribs. I could not seem to make the masking foil work. After several attempts I found out that the foil simply had gone bad and the glue had changed its behaviour, thus becoming more sticky. So I ordered a new foil and the masking was finished within one evening.
I know I presented the method here before, so just a brief description - I take the drawing of the wing I had made in the preparation stage and cut it on my plotter. Afterwards I put the mask on the wing and remove the foil in the areas where the ribs will be. Once done, I give the wing some layers of surfacer which creates ridges in the unmasked areas.

Hi Ondra,
This build is amazing in such a small scale!!
I hope I'm not too late with this information about the cockpit decking, but this is what I think is correct. Of course I could be wrong.
Here's extracts from my PDF build log of the same aircraft.
Mike
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cockpit Decking:
‘Field’ modifications’ to aircraft were quite common and the pilots cockpit decking was modified by certain squadrons or pilots, again to improve visibility and to aid in clearing gun stoppages.
Normally the decking was fitted side to side of the fuselage and also between the two Vickers machine guns.
Some aircraft had the decking reduced at the right side of the cockpit decking as well as having the decking removed across to the left Vickers machine gun.
It appears that William Barkers B6313 was modified further by having the left side of the decking removed.
Fortunately the ‘Wingnut Wings’ kit covers the earlier B6313 (as can be seen in the
following photograph) and makes provision for modifying the cockpit decking.
William Barker with his Sopwith ‘Camel’, Serial No.B6313 (earlier version), France, 1917.
The kit instructions show how to modify the cockpit decking panel (kit part B7) for Barkers ‘Camel’ B6313 (earlier colour scheme), which indicates that that lower portion of the decking, at the left side, needs to be retained. However photographs taken at the time seem to show that the left side of the decking was completely removed, whilst the right side appears to have been
retained, but reduced in size.
The removed cockpit decking can be easily seen when the above photograph of Barkers B6313 ‘Camel’ (earlier scheme) is compared to a more standard ‘Camel’, as can be seen in the
following photograph.
A close up photograph of Barkers later colour schemed ‘Camel’ B6313 shows that the cockpit left side frame is exposed where the decking had been cut away. This exposed frame also appears to be shown in the earlier scheme profile in the ’Wingnut Wings’ instruction manual.
Therefore the forward section of kit part B7 was cut away to be used with reduced right side (kit part A32).

Hi Ondra,
The photos I showed are of Barkers B6313 in its earlier state.
Later the colour scheme was changed to the version you are building.
Also the engine cowl and upper wing of B6313 were further modified.
Mike
Extract from my build log:
-------------------------------------
Later, Barker had B6313 further modified by having extra cooling slots (four in total) cut into the engine cowl and also had the linen covering removed from the rear of the upper wing centre
section, again to improve visibility from the cockpit. The personal colour scheme was also changed to have fourteen alternate black and white stripes (white stripes slightly wider than the black stripes) around the rear of the fuselage. On the fin, the arrowed heart was reversed with the arrow head this time pointing down towards the bottom, front of the fin. Throughout its life, B6313 had the linen coverings recovered several times.

Many thanks for your advices, Mike, they are a major help!
I have to admit that the exact shape of the cockpit decking is still not very tangible to me, so I made two sketches of how I understand the adjustment to be done - the red sections have to be removed. Is my understanding correct?
The part I am most worried about is the engine cowl with the additional cooling slots. In this scale the material is almost paper thin on the front side, so if I add the cooling slots, I have serious concerns about the rigidity.
I might go for "artistic license" by omitting the slots and claiming that there must have been a period of time where the plane was carrying this camo but the slots had not been cut out yet - he mechanics said: "ok, guys enough for today, we have repainted the whole plane, repainted the heart and stripes, removed the linen from the wing centre, so the cooling slots have to wait for next week". :)
Should anyone have an idea how to cut out the slots without the danger of ruining the part, all advices are warmly welcome.
Cheers
Ondra
-
My reading of your palm says "Do not cut slots" - that is in the third wrinkle from the left - written since birth.
But seriously - I struggle at 1:32. What you are doing is utterly incredible!
Cheers,
Alistair
-
Hi Ondra,
Below are shots of the test fit for my modified decking.
As for the slots in the engine cowl, I think you are probably correct - trying to actually cut slot in such a small and fragile piece could spell disaster.
I had to be careful cutting my cowl and it's in 1:32 scale!!
Could you paint the slots on the cowl - as your scale is so small it would be difficult to tell the difference,
Mike
(http://www.thatoneplease.co/buildlogs/SOPWITH-CAMEL/testdeck1.jpg)
-
I tend to agree with Mike: painting the slots on the cowling would be easier, and if you make a mistake you can correct it much more easily. Just how you produce your quality models in this scale is still a complete mystery to me.
Stephen.
-
You could use a piece of clear decal material painted black or very dark gray and then cut to the desired shape of the slot. Advantage here is you can cut as many as you need until you get one just right. Can't do that with a knife, drill or paint brush.
Listen to me advising someone who can work such magic in 144 th scale.
sp
-
Should anyone have an idea how to cut out the slots without the danger of ruining the part, all advices are warmly welcome.
Cheers
Ondra
Could you remake the part in (2) pieces, front and back and then add small plastic strip in locations between to locate the slots? The front and back would be too short if glued together, the space between is where you would space the slots.
-
Hi Ondra,
As a follow up to the cockpit decking - here's some shots of how mine turned out,

While I was out of home during this week, I was thinking about possible solutions for the opening in the engine cowling.
In the first step I will test out how the decal solution will look, but plan B never goes amiss, right?
So the plan B will be a cylinder made of brass I will insert the cowling into. The bottom side of the cylinder will have openings identical with the ones I want on the cowling and thus serve as a guide while drilling out the holes.
Will see, how it will work.

This project is making a damn good progress! A Camel is not a big aircraft in 1:1, but in this small scale this is again unbelievable, how clean and precise your parts are created.
For your cowling it sound like a plan. May be you need only one slot and a 90° mark. So you can rotate the cowling in the cylinder and all 4 cutouts are done my the same template.
Good luck and Cheers,
Frank
-
Many thanks for your supportive comment, Frank, and also many thanks for the idea with the slots!
Not much progress this weekend, only the wings and tailplanes received several layers of surfacer, now I will leave them to cure until next weekend, will see how it turns out then.

I spent most of the time at the workbench adjusting the cockpit opening. I did not want to damage the interior, therefore I could not use my Proxxon and had to remove all the material using a sharp blade and small files. But the result looks acceptable.

Many thanks to all of you for your kind and encouraging words!
After a rather long break from the workbench (I got a new job which had a major influence on the amount of my workbench time as well as modelling mojo) I decided to get back to the Camel.
To make a calm start, I began to work on the engine. As next to nothing will be visible eventually, I decided to omit the ribs on the cylinders this time (to be very honest, they are heavily out of scale on the Eindecker, I rather added them for the feeling).
As usually I used a paper template to glue the cylinders in place.
-
Each cylinder will get two push rods, which I want to represent by means of elastic monofilament. I hope this photo give a rough idea what I am up to.
I decided to quit using flickr and currently I am looking for a replacement to upload my photos to (after the photobucket experience and now flickr changing user terms I do not want to go through the same story for the third time), so for now I am forced to upload the photos directly to the forum. Should anyone have a good replacement for flicker, all hints are welcome.

Many thanks for your nice supportive comments, Rick, Stephen and Giuseppe! They are highly appreciated.
Last weekend I finaly found some time for the workbench again, so I started working on the propeller. The centre section will require some more filing, but the shape seems to be quite ok.
I had to spend some time experimenting with how to create the undercarriage. I only had evergreen profiles, so I needed to find a way to give them the right shape.
I used red marker and painted both sides, afterwards I took a sharp scalpel blade and started scratching off the edges. Thanks to the red marker I was able to keep good overview about the amount of material removed.
The rest was easy, I used my drawing as a template:
On which I afterwards glued the profiles cut to the required shape with CA:
And glued them together with Tamiya extra thin to weld the joints.
In the next step I will remove the CA with debonder which will loosen the parts from the paper. This is pretty much the same method I used for the interior construction.
Cheers

I decided to take a rather long break from the workbench as I sort of lost my modelling mojo and did not want this fact to have negative impact of the result.
Fortunately during the vacation period I found some time again to spend at my workbench, so here a few photos.
I was not happy about the scribing on the fuselage, so I spent several more attempts to make it look more to my liking.
The current status is not perfect, but acceptable.

In the past days I have only managed to mask the wings for the wing ribs:

And the result looks acceptable:

As I had black surfacer in the airbrush gun, I also primed the cowling and polished it:

The RAF Museum has just uploaded this image it states is of Barker's personal marking from this specific Camel.

Reportedly he cut the fabric from each side of the tailplane and gave one each to his ground crew as a souvenir.

I keep working on last details before I start painting, today I experimented with the nail lines on the wooden panels. Most probably they will not be visible at the end of the day, so rather just for the feeling. :)

I keep working on last bits and pieces before painting. Today I made the machine guns and dry fitted them in the cockpit - so far so good. One of them is slightly longer, but this should be easy to fix.

I also turned the little cone covering the propeller hub, on the photo it is held in place by a little drop of white glue.

Many thanks for your generous comments, Rick, Stephen, Terri and Richie, they are greatly appreciated.
The fuselage somehow disappeared from my workbench unfortunately, but after 14 days of searching I finally found it so I can move on.
I masked the pulley inspection windows, so the parts are now ready for painting.

Hi Ondra!
Good to see you back and working on this Camel!
I'm looking forward to seeing this little guy in the color dress.
Regarding the stripes on fuselage: you will remove every second one for painting?
Cheers,
Frank
-
Oh wow, that is incredible! Masking those fuselage stripes must have taken massive patience and determination. Of the kind that enables you to spend 2 weeks searching for fuselage! :)
Seriously though, this is absolutely brilliant!
-
That, as everything else on this build, is amazing, ( I await the red devil in 1/144 with baited breath).
I doubt it would be easier or less fiddly, but wouldn't it be less error prone to cut thin decal strips? The masked stripes are no doubt to scale, but any leaks under the masking will be in 1:1 scale.
sp
-
Well, I thought I had posted a comment Hours ago. So making up for My Mistake Now. Your work in this scale is as I always say, remarkable! I can't even imagine doing the masking for those stripes in 1/144th scale! You Rock Ondra!!
RAGIII
-
Nice masking and not one I would want to redo either . Looking forward on seeing her with livery .
Terri
-
Many thanks to all of you for your generous comments!
@Frank: yes, that is the idea. The fuselage got a coat of white, so afterwards I will remove the masks covering the black stripes and put a layer of black paint.
@sp: the idea with decal strips is plan B, should this method not work out. As I will be using airbrush and Drooling Bulldog paints (only very light coat covers perfectly), I hope for a good result, but at the end of the day I might be wrong. The trouble with decal strips is keeping constant spacing between the stripes, therefore I decided to use it as plan B.
Cheers
Ondra
-
Good to see that you are continuing with this Ondra: and really pleased that you found the fuselage - if you had lost it permanently I cannot image how you might have felt. Painting stripes on the fuselage in any scale would drive me to desperation, but in that scale....

Wonderful work Ondra. I've been following your progress over at KG144. It's absolutely brilliant.

Just like William Adair's Miles Magister over on the Off Topic Builds, this is just a ridiculous build - ridiculously good in a ridiculously small scale! I don't really get how you can produce this clean kind of work in this scale! Brilliant work!

Truly wonderful work, Ondra.

Many thanks to all of you for your kind comments, it is a major encouragement for the build! ;)
I added the holes to the upper wooden panel, unfortunately I screwed up on the aft one and it turned out too big. But I can live with that. I also painted the cockpit coaming and am now waiting for the oil paint to cure.
The roundels are now in place, the alignment is unfortunately not perfect. I had to use decals instead of wet transfers, therefore the process was more complicated. But I can live with it as well. :)
The wings also got a filter using oil paints, a second layer will follow once the current one has cured.

After a long break, my little Camel is back on the workbench and it is time to start my least favourite part of the build - rigging and assembly.
To overcome the fear I bought two new tools - a mini holder with rotatable head (a nice surplus is it also features a PE bender) and a hand stabilizer - that is the ball with the stick on the photo.
Yesterday I made first experiments and both tools seem to be very helpful.

Beautiful work Ondra, as usual... I can't imagine how that "hand stabilizer" works...
I would like to purchase the mini holder... where is it possible to find it? How is it called exactly to look for it in the web?
Thanks
Antonio
-
Hi Antonio!
I got the mini holder from Aliexpress for about 40 bucks incl. shipping, it is called "precision bench vise".
The hand stabilizer is a very simple but genial tool - you hold the stick between your middle finger and ring finger and the tool provides slight counterweight and friction - thus your hand is much more stable. I was a bit suspicious first, but I have to say it works like a wonder.
Cheers
Ondra

Great to see you back on this one Ondra! The tools look interesting although I think it would take about a 50lb. weight to stabilize my hands ::)
RAGIII

Good to see you back Ondra. Those tools look far too expensive and difficult to use for me!

Getting my little Camel ready for rigging, I set up this little rigging factory. :)
For single rigging I use elastic monofilament by Uschi van der Rosten which I glue to a piece of copper wire painted black with a sharpie.
For double rigging I glue the monofilament to a piece of 0,4 mm lead wire - I hope the photos tell the story.

After a very long break I have decided to get my Camel off the workbench, as the last remaining steps are assembly and rigging (the most scary parts of the build from my point of view, therefore I tend to procrastinate on every build...).
