Many thanks one and all.
This one sat in the jig for a few months because I couldn't get the wings to fit properly. After coming back to it with fresh eyes I decided to remove the partially attached wing a, repaint it and try again. When I looked more closely at the brass struts I'd made I realized that they were 1/2 mm too long which was throwing the wing too high for the cabanes
Once sorted the wing lined up and dropped on easily (can't understand why I didn't spot it the first time round)
The wood is oil over acrylic, but although the effect looked spectacular under a magnifier it was far too subtle to be seen easily so I ended up adding a few knots and grain lines on top of it using acrylics mixed with a little 'glazing medium' (which helps painting details since it stops the paint drying too quickly)
Here's a quick pic of how the aileron actuators (or whatever they are called) were done - strip of plastic the same length as the main body sanded to shape and then sliced off. Annealed jewelry wire wrapped around a piece of brass wire of suitable thickness to form a coil and then rings cut off that could be trimmed to size (0.2 mm hole drilled in aileron and plastic body made fitting a bit easier)
