Hi Patrick.

Great start from you. The cockpit sides are amazing.

I also enjoy the detail on the engine. Very nicely done.

Hello Zabu,

Thank you so much, this means a lot to me. Pity that I'm still not able to produce some real wood resemblance.

Very kind regards

Thank you very much Des and Rick. Your appreciation is very welcome since my self confidence was a bit low with the failure of the SE5a. All these friendship keeps me going.

Beautiful start, Patrick!  The wood effects and wire bracing is first rate and your
engine is superb!  Whatever you think of your SE5, it served you well in perfecting
your talents.  I'll enjoy following your build, my friend. :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

 Hi Ernie,

Thank you so much. I appreciate your support tremendously. After all I think I will try to recover as far as I can on the SE5a. I purchased a little jig and hope that way I may be able to fix the upper wing. That's for a little later. I still love the SE5a very much.
It's so pleasing that the modellers who are a thousand times better and handier than me take the time for watching everybody's build. Thank you for that!

Kind regards

Patrick

Hello all,

A small update. I made the cabin and the instrument panel before installing it. I'm not so pleased with the pilot's stick. It's way overdone and looks somewhat "baroque". Next time better. The bracing of the side panels is a bit dangerous because the side panels are so tiny that they would easely be deformed. And indeed the seat belts are immense compared to the chair. Sorry if the pictures are a bit on the dark side.

Hello Bud,  Ernie, Des, Przemol, Rick and Paulo,

Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragements on my build of the tripe. Although I'm rather pleased with the result so far, it will never come as close as the fantastic builds you all made and are making. These words coming from such master builders are very hartwarming. Thank you all.
For the next one I will definitely have to exercice on the woodgrain because up to now it is rather flat.
Thank you again gentleman!

Very kind regards

Patrick,
I just started my Triplane build and have been studying your fine build along with the several others here looking for hints, ideas, and trying to ensure I learn from the experience of you Guys who have done this one before me. I have a suggestion and some thoughts regarding the cord wrapping on your control stick; just my suggestions...........
First, you've mentioned several times that you are not happy with this part of your Build and, to repeat a very wise bit of advice from "Bo" on this Forum concerning another Build here, maybe consider changing it as it is bothering you and, importantly, "you know it's there". I've gone through the Albatros Publications Data File #22 as I was considering trying to replicate the cord wrap (not an easy job methinks!) and most of the photos of the cockpit show a plain metal hand grip, no cord. The photos I speak of are of the RAF Museums refurbished N5912, there are 3 or 4 very clear close up photos showing the plain metal grip. There's also a very clear photo of the cockpit of N6292, "Lily" of 8 Naval Sqn. taken in July 1917 and again the plain stick grip is very apparent. In fact, the only photos I have of the cord wrapping are on "Replicas", notably the one in the Canadian National Aviation Museum taken in the early 1990's. Based on the foregoing I intend to do the plain grip as I believe that was the normal configuration. At least, in my view, the logic seems valid as I'm doing N533, a twin gunned version like yours and of the same configuration as N5912 of the RAF Museum. (albeit N533 and N5912 were built by different sub-contractors) Remember too that, like colours and markings, there is rarely a definitive answer to any question on these aircraft, it's been almost 100 years since they were in service!
Having said all that I believe you could simply reach into your closed cockpit and snip off just the top grip, replace it with the cleaned up original or a scratch built plain one, and feel much happier with your excellent Build. If you are like me at least you'd be able to sleep better having put it back to where you want it!
Just my thoughts and logic, hope you consider it in the constructive spirit offered; you've got a beautiful Model coming along here!
Cheers, :)
Lance

Hello Patrick:

Lance hit the nail on the head.  If you aren't happy with that stick, you will always be regretting it.  Take the time now and make it right.  You are making good progress and the build is clean.  I like your instrument panel.  The rest of the cockpit is nice and tidy as well.  You are well on your way to an outstanding build.

Best

Mark

Thank you Lance, Alan, Gary and Mark for your kind words of encouragement.

Lance you are certainly right, I should redo the stick, otherwise I wil always regret. It looks so grotesque. There is indeed a picture of a wrapped stick in the instruction booklet of WnW of the N6920 but this is as you say a replica. Rick did it to, but then it was well done and sober and looks great. I will see how I can manage. Time is not an issue.
I'm very pleased that you all take the time to follow my build and your comments are more dan welcome.

Kind regards
Patrick

Your cockpit looks splendid Patrick, I am extremely impressed with your instrument panel, you did a superb job with it.

I wrapped the control column of my Sopwith Pup using 0.07mm copper wire, when painted it looks like a proper wrapped handle.

Keep up the excellent work Patrick, this model is shaping up to be a stunner.

Hey, Patrick!

Nice change on your spade grip! At the risk of being a real pain, I was going to refer you to page 5 in the WNW Triplane instruction booklet, left hand middle photo caption: "Note the cord wrapped around the spade grip of the control column which was not a feature of WW1 era Tripes as far as we can ascertain." But  you've got it changed, and nicely done. Good luck with the rest of your build. I have one in the cache, as you will have surmised, and I am keen to see how you handle this build.  8)

Great progress Patrick, and looking very nice indeed! I like your PC12, I'm within a few days of closing up mine and spraying the main colour as well. What paint(s) did you use, is it a mix, and if so can you share your "recipe"? The tone appears perfect to my eye.

Hello Lance,

Thank you for your kind comments. I used a mixture and for the first time I used water-based Vallejo. I mixed 140 drops of Vallejo Chocolate Brown and 55 drops of Valejo Beige Brown and 140 drops of distilled water. (--> 40%, 20%, 40%). As I liked the color of Prez very much I tried to obtain his color, but I think mine is a little darker.

Kind regards
Patrick

Thanks Patrick. I have difficulty finding a Vallejo source and will be trying a mix of Tamiya colours I mixed up a few months back. (I read the formula somewhere here I think?) The brown portion is their XF 10 Flat Brown which is very dark and has a real "chocolate" tone. I rarely work with acrylics so I'm looking forward to trying this one.....hope I can get a decent result.

Wonderful work on the Tripe, Patrick.  You have, I figure captured the PC12
just about perfectly.  Well done, my friend.  I don't know what trouble you
had with the airbrush, but your paint looks great!  The build is coming along
very well. I look forward to the next update.

Cheers,

Thank you so much Ernie. I had some spots in the PC12 layer and the final clear coat is not uniform enough due to the airbrush. Maybe I thinned the clear painting not enough for the air-brush. Still learning there. Thank you again for following my build Ernie.

Hello Patrick:

The new stick looks the business and really enhances the cockpit, you did a great job on the replacement.  The rest of the model is coming along nicely as well.  I like your PC 12, has a nice rich tone to it.

Hello all,

Some new pictures. I had quite a bit of trouble with the airbrush. This build comes nowhere close to these of Rick, Chris, Des or Prez, but I'm trying to learn from them. Thank you for looking.

Well Patrick, As one of those builds you mention I must say your paintwork looks better than mine and I mean that wholeheartedly! Looking great!

Hi all,

Referring to the problems Chris encountered assembling the undercarriage of the tripe and the time I already spend looking for a way to fix it, I came to a kind of a solution which might be not right at all.
I measured the distance of the holes in the fuselage were the legs of the undercarriage have to be glued in. This was 20mm. Then I measured the width of the spreader bar and found 42mm. Then I measured approx. the height from spreader bar to fuselage (30mm). This gave me the angle the legs make on the spreader bar which was 70°. Measuring the angle on the drawings of Ian Stair of the tripe in Windsock Datafile (22), I found 70° too. So I made a cardboard template of 70° that can be aligned with the spreader bar and so adjust the angle of the undercarriage legs. Does this make any sense? Who could help me out?
Thank you!

Kind regards
Patrick

Patrick,
That's basically the same method I use for the cabane struts and occasionally the undercarriage on most of my projects, a template is a wonderful aid when it comes to alignment and angles. I'd say you are on the correct track, brilliant!

Lance

Hi Rick,

I had already finished gluing the undercarriage legs when I received your post. So I tried to redo the setup. A jig is a very great word for what it is you know.

The base cardboard is replicating the 4 holes in the fuselage (I fixed the legs with tape).
The 2nd cardboard is representing the angle (70°) on both sides. The width is approx. 42mm, this is the dimension of the spreader bar. All has to be fixed by tape (the picture is just an exemple and not properly done).

The undercarriage parts are the least fine WnW parts I found till today, although it's good looking when properly fixed. I still had troubles assembling them.

Kind regards
Patrick

What a great idea Patrick!  By using cardboard it is a cheap and easy method, and can be repeated.

I too find that the undercarriage parts are very tricky, until complete.  I usually assemble the undercarriage with the model upside down so the glue can set without having to support the weight of the model.

I will certainly give your method a try next time!

Patrick,
First, the photo of the jig you made for the proper installation of the undercarriage is excellent. I will be replicating your method when I install mine very soon, brilliant work!
For the gap on the cockpit decking I had a similar problem on a previous Build of the Roden Fokker DRI. I solved it by removing the decking, building it up a bit with styrene strips, and refinishing and then re-installing it. If you can remove the decking/closure that might work for you.
Nice work so far, I'll be following your progress as I'm only a few steps behind you on the same Build.
Cheers,
Lance

Patrick,
I use a styrene product from "Evergreen", they manufacture a line of styrene products ranging  from sheets to rods and strips. It started, I believe, as a product for Model Railroad enthusiasts however I see it referenced here as well. It, or a similar line, should be available at most Hobby Stores. In lieu you could use scrap from your spares box or even sprue. All you need do is glue on your extended profile, fill and sand to the new profile you want, and you should be in business. Assuming you can remove the cowling it's a lot easier then filling the present gap and maintains the separate "panels" on your model. I'll dig around today and see if I have a photo or two that might help.
Cheers,
Lance

Patrick,
I did have the photos, should have looked first and included them in my previous.
Problem was the same as you are having, I had a gap between the top cowling and the fuselage. You can see the white extended portion I added by gluing a strip on, then sanding and filling, then repainted . This one is slightly different in that it actually fits over the fuselage joint, it's not a flush fitting as on the Tripe but it should solve the problem.

Hello all,

I finally completed my first ever model. Not brilliant of course and many imperfections. The first wing installation and wing-rigging. I owe a lot to the build logs of Prez, Mark, Des and Chris. Thank you all! The rigging wires are painted with a mixture of steel and alu color. The eyelets and tubes are from Bob von der Buckelheim because I never had the proper spring steel to produce them properly myself. Bob’s eyelets are great. Thank you to all my friends who showed this kind interest in my build and gave me encouragement and advice. Lance, I will try to retighten the cockpit closing afterwards. I will never be an excellent modeler, I started much to late but I am enjoying it and like to be on the forum a lot. I am still looking too for a proper setup for the foto’s.
Thank you for stopping by.

Kind regards

Patrick,
It's a very nice Model and given it's your first it's doubly impressive. It's all about the challenge and enjoyment; your next one will better and the trend will continue. When I started my 1:32 collection a little over two years ago I had been modelling off and on for over 60 years, and the first, an Albatros DIII is horrible compared to my last, number six to date! It's a very "steep improvement curve" which I know you'll enjoy, each project seems to be better then the last. Last, I'm always amazed at how much I learn daily from this Site despite many years in the Hobby.
Again, enjoy your projects above all else; when the hobby becomes a stress point something's been lost, probably the fun of it all! There are a number of world class Model Builders on this Site; I'll never be as good as they are but the enjoyment's in the trying! ;)
Well done and congratulations on a beautiful finish.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you all so much Lance, Ernie, Bob and Bo

Your appreciation is hartwarming for me. The fact alone that you did follow my build, gave me advice, was very special to me. And your very kind words really mean a lot to me. I know that photo's mask a lot of imperfections. So there is a lot to learn ( about painting, weathering a.s.o.) Glueing is still a risky business for me because of my deteriorating eyes. Rigging went munch better because of the excellent eyelets of Bob. I sometimes do have stress, but overall I'm really enjoying it and as I said before, it's like having a lot of friends all over the world. So... a big Thank You.

Very neat job Patrick!  Everything looks properly aligned which is not easy with 3 sets of wings, and the rigging - which makes all the difference to models like these IMHO - is spot on.  :)

Sincere congratulations! It is an absolutely very fine "first one". Very sharp and clean. I am looking forward to see more of your projects.

If I may... One thing missing, to my taste, is a bit orangy shade on the wood. I would suggest you to try to airbrush thin Clear Orange coat - it does marvels :)

Well done on completion Patrick; isn't the Sopwith Triplane a lovely aircraft? I very much like the photograph you've taken from above and behind the whole aircraft. I suspect that for many aircraft an attack from there and at that range would have had fatal consequences, but with even a reasonably skilled pilot I'd expect the Tripehound to be away in a trice!

Best wishes
Nigel

Thank you very much Ian, I was rather pleased of the aligment, but the rigging... My eyes are deteriorating so rapidly. I cut 3 wires, trying to cut of the last little piece of wire against the tubes and had to start all over again. I appreciate your comments very much!

Thank you Prze, really happy with your comments, coming from someone who made such a wonderful tripe before me. And you are quite right about the wood. I struggled making the painting look like real wood but did not succeed. Thank you for the tip!

I'm very happy with your comments Nigel. Indeed it's a lovely plane. It was very manoeuvrable so you are probably right saying that it could get away under those circumstances.

Thank you again Nigel.

We all start with something and you started with a very fine build and atractive model, one to be proud of.
