Wingnut Wings WNW Roland C.IIa "White 2", Schusta 6
« on: November 11, 2023, 04:43:54 AM »
A few years ago I built a whale, a Roland C.IIa, for a fellow model builder.
Here is the link to the finished model in this forum:

https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=13147.0

Some time ago I had the opportunity to acquire a WNW Roland kit from an estate.
The kit had not yet been started by the original owner, but he had already separated many parts from the casting frames.

To cut a long story short, on a whim I started to clean and sort the separated parts.
Sorting turned into painting, painting turned into gluing - so I'm building another whale, but this time for myself.

The model represents a Roland C.IIa, which was stationed at Schusta 6 in the spring of 1917. The identification was a white "2" on a black background on the fin. The scheme was very similar to the white "7" which can be made from the original kit.

Here is the current built-status:

As you can see in the previous pictures, some cables, levers and rods from the levers to the engine etc. were additionally mounted in the fuselage.

Here are some more pictures.
The pictures were taken under the table lamp, some colors appear less shiny in daylight and therefore look more realistic.

"Sorting turned into painting..."

Funny how that happens, isn't it, Bertl? Absolutely beautiful paintwork, those wobble pumps look like you turned them out of brass. I was able to find the WnW Hannover kit recently, but sadly I missed the boat on the Walfisch :(

Truly gorgeous wear-and-tear effect.  how did you achieve the paint-worn-wood flooring?

@all
Thank you very much for your kind comments.
I haven't really been away from the forum for the last 12 or 13 months, just had a lot of other things on my plate.
From time to time I was present "incognito" as a silent reader and enjoyer of the building reports.

The coloring of the two fuselage insides and the floor began with a primer coat of Gunze/Hobby color "Radome".
Then some light shading and clouds in the fuselage with heavily thinned Tamiya "white" and also some darkened white.
Then paint with Tamiya XF-66 "light gray".
As soon as the paint was dry, I removed the light gray paint with a very stiff-haired brush - but only in places that could be caused by the touch of the pilot's/observer's hands.
So behind levers or on the Morse code machine, for example.

Almost the same procedure was used on the corridor floor in terms of the paint structure, except that some areas were pre-shaded with Tamiya "Smog" and also a little bit yellow.
I would also like to mention that the layers of the floor boards were engraved on the lowest floor by the observer and some nails/screws were indicated by drilling holes in all the floors.

The wood grain was painted with oil paints "Sienna raw", a little "English red light" and minimal "Sienna burnt".

After the oil paint had dried, chipping fluid from Ammo MIG was applied.
As soon as the chipping fluid had dried, the hull bottoms were painted with Tamiya XF-66 "light gray". After drying, treated with water and a stiff-haired brush.
Weathering mostly with heavily diluted dark oil paint.

The main tank under the pilot's seat as well as the reserve tank behind the pilot were painted with Mr.Metalcolor "brass", then treated with chipping fluid and Gunze RLM02 on top.
The residue of the spilled fuel on the reserve tank was painted with dark oil paint and Tamiya "Smog".

Metal polishing paint from Mr. Metallcolor was also used for the cooling water expansion tank and the ammunition housing.
The procedure is to first paint with the base color “Aluminium” and then apply some “Stainless” and “Iron” with a short brush.
