Eduard 1/48 Albatros D.III and D.V
« on: October 02, 2019, 06:09:08 AM »
So after having made my introduction, I now make my first contribution here.

Long ago, I liberated two models from the garage of a fellow modeller. The intention was to venture into WWI-modelling and especially try some new techniques like simulating wood. I made some progress on one of them, not without problems along the way, and then I think it stalled at the point where I was to attach the topwing and figure out how to rig it. Well, I've now resumed the builds and the goal is to finish them and learn along the way. Hints and tips will be happily accepted.

First up, some pictures of the D.III, unfortunately dustier than necessary. Built almost straight from the box, including the paint instructions. I've used Uschi van der Rosten's woodgrain decals, which was problematic in that they tended to lift from the surface when I masked over them. Rigged using Uschi's elastic thread and home cut Albion Alloy tubing - damn difficult to cut them consistently.

The black and white band came as a decal, but I masked and painted it instead. The masking of this then caused the woodgrain decal to lift and you can see my clumsy patching to the right of the fuselage band.

Here are a couple of pictures of the D.V. I was planning to use woodgrain decals here as well, but last night I made a go with oils instead. It came out a bit too dark I believe - it should be light birch plywood I believe. Apart from that, I'm quite pleased with the look.

Your wood looks nice, I like the structure of your oil version.

Lovely Fredrik!

I’ve found if you want a plywood/ birch look the base coat has to be very light - almost white.

Great masking!

Thank you Frank, Terri and Guy!

I'll keep on working on the wood tones, or rather, I will keep collecting tips and lessons for future builds. I'm at least quite happy with the look of the oils.

Guy: I suppose that I should go lighter on the base coat, but should I also go for another oil colour instead of burnt umber?

Yes!

Trial & error.. lighter shades, add some white & just have a test sheet of plastic and just experiment until you get the look you want.

I usually pre shade too, but this has to be very subtle.

Looks great though  :D

Your overall weathering and toning down of the decal colors is very good.

Both are coming along beautifully! I really like your use of the oils on the DV. I am looking forward to the next update!

Thank you RAGIII and Kensar!
The reason for the decals being toned down and in line with the other painting and weathering, is that there are no decals on yet. The markings are either painted using masks or ordinary tape. I did forget to put some decals on though, so I need to clear coat again and sort that.

Coming along nicely Fredrik.
Will you bring these or the WnW Albies to the sunday meeting?  ;)

Hi Bjarne! Thank you and yes, probably! I'm still a bit stuck on whether to go with Bob's buckles or Gaspatch buckles for the WnW Albatros, so it'll probably remain asleep for a while. /F

Well, I was referring to your D.III.  The wood tones on the D.V look the part.  I will be following along on your build.   :)

Hi!
Two really pleasant build! I like "oils" wood more than "decals" one, people that commented before myself wrote what you need to obtain light wooden finishes.
Black and white marking on the D.III fuselage are realized in a fantastic way.
Many congrats!

Fredrik,
I'd say yes to both; try a test piece using Raw Sienna oil instead of the "reddish" Burnt Umber for the streaking to get the lighter "rich honey" tone of varnished but unstained wood, I think you'll like the results on your next one. Here's an example:

Lovely work and especially on that black and white checkered fuselage band.
Cheers,
