Hi folks - I'm working on a couple of WnW kits at the moment and decided to tackle the engines first. Detailing these engines with ignition wires is one of the parts of the job I find a bit challenging, and tried something different than my usual use of thin copper wire. I picked up some thin lead wire used for tying lures for fly-fishing at a local Cabella's (Sporting & Fishing supplies). The size is .01" and it seems to work great for this and also other wiring & plumbing in aircraft models. I used a larger diameter for the small line seen on the side of the Mercedes engine.
We'll see how everything paints up when I continue with both of these projects.
Cheers,
Gary

Looking great ! I will have to check out that wire as I am running out of Old Lindberg Motorized kits copper wire! Also cool to see another Dual build 8)
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick - I like to have a couple of builds on the go at all times to save on time and resources when airbrushing, painting woodgrain with oils, etc. Also nice to have something else to work on when sub-assemblies are set aside to let the glue dry, too.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Fantastic start Gary, looking forward to seeing your magic on these two beauties.
-
Those engines look great, Gary.
I use beading wire from a craft store. Comes in many sizes. I most frequently use a 0.008" size.
-
Gary,
I've used the very same stuff. The main detractor I've discovered is that the wire is not at all rigid and I keep inadvertently knocking it out of alignment however I'm the first to admit that it's entirely self induced problems in my case!
It's great stuff, how do you join it to the plugs?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Ken Juan and Lance - thanks! I agree that the lead is very pliable and easy to distort.
To answer Lance's question about attaching the wire to the spark plug ends - I cement a very small styrene tab to the sliced-off tip of the plug, and top it off with a #15 Grandt Line bolt. I take the end of the lead wire and tuck it behind the tab, securing it with a tiny drop of cyano glue. If you squint hard enough it should resemble a crimped connection that's fastened with a nut...in 1/32 scale :-)
Painting the lead is just as much trouble as with copper wire, with final touch-ups at the end of the process. Even with primer, the wire will shed it's paint if bent a little.
Cheers,
Gary
-
That is a super idea for ignition wires - another of the many gems that appear regularly on this site. Have you bench run those engines yet before you put them in the airframes?
Stephen.
-
Very nice engines and a great hint to take the lead wire for flyfishing.
Bye,
Manni

Looks really good Gary. I like the look of the lead wire as I assume it's very flexible to use? I've used florists wire and craft wire but the thin lead wire looks much better. Thanks for the tip!

-
Never tried lead wire, it seems it would be easy to work with. Splendid results BTW!
Ryan
-
My thanks to Stephen, Dave, Manni and Ryan for your encouraging comments.
To answer Dave's question - yes, the lead wire is extremely pliable and can conform to whatever shape you want. There is a drawback though - it distorts quite easily and one has to be careful not to squeeze too hard with tweezers when positioning it. If the wire gets too distorted one ends up having to redo the job.
Cheers,
Gary

Good day to all, I did a bit more work on the Mercedes engine for the Roland. Almost done with it, short of a dull finish to add and a few chalk pastels after it's installed in the fuselage.

UFAG, Bud and Rick - glad you like it! I'm part way through the cockpit interior and hope to post some pics soon. I've also got a 21cm WW1 Morser by Takom that needs a fair bit of detail added....but that's another story :-)
Cheers,
Gary

Another engine that only needs fule, oil and some electricity to power the spark plugs....
Stephen.

Working concurrently on the "Harry Tate", I've been trying to paint some of the details and smaller bits before commencing construction of the sub-assemblies, so the following pics are are summary of some of the progress so far. Thanks for looking :)

Thanks PrzemoL! And he's a few bits from the Roland...
I used a trick learned on this forum for making the handles for the fuel selector valves using 0.5mm brass tubing - bending it and squeezing it.

Superb detailing Gary. The Lozenge fabric baffle you've added to the fuselage former of the D.VI is incredibly well done, a couple of more winners soon to emerge from your Model Room! BTW, have you filled the requirement for the display cabinets we discussed in Nanton?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks Juan and Lance! I'm enjoying both builds and happy to be in WnW land again :)
Lance - I'll be looking into setting up the new hobby room this fall and have a couple of options for showcases, but nothing as of yet. Still trying to finish renos and get ready for our UK trip.

With a bit more done on the cockpit of the RE.8 I thought I'd share a couple of progress pictures. The rigging was using Uschi's fine rigging thread and I used one of Barracuda Studio's wicker seats (which some have mentioned they are slightly undersized).

Good day folks - after a while away from the model bench I was able to make some progress on the Re.8 by adding the engine, upper cowl and push rods. Not an easy task as the upper cowling is very thick and needs to be thinned down considerably to get things to look half decent. Thanks for looking!

"Halfway Decent", I think you have far exceeded that Mark! Simply Outstanding!
RAGIII
-
Yup , that would have frustrated the hell out me , well done Gary :)
Terri
-
Wow, it looks so familiar. And great progress. Will you close the engine with side and bottom cowlings? I am stil deliberating what to do in my RE8.
BTW, is it your choice for Battleship Grey what we see on the model now? I have a problem with this colour. My understanding was it was rather darkish and bluish hue of grey. But what TVAL propose on their otherwise lovely replicas recently is a very light grey, like the one on Gotha G.1. What do you think of it?
-
Super job Gary,
The engine is really well done and the wiring is top notch!
Guy
-
Spectacular thus far Gary; the work on the upper cowling is really effective and your detailing is absolutely superb. Are the metal fittings on the engine bearers painted or are they PE additions ....... they are incredibly well done?
Looking forward to seeing this one in it's "altogether" next year!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks to all for the great comments (all greatly appreciated!) - and I'll try and answer a couple of questions...
PrzemoL - yes, I will add all the cowlings to this and button up the engine since I like the final model to look as flight-worthy as possible. This is one of the most awkward looking aircraft, but in an interesting way. If you know what I mean :-)
The grey colour I've used for the cowlings is my own mixture of Tamiya paints which I made a batch for when I did the F2b this past year. I can't even remember what I mixed up, but it will look entirely different after I've weathered it. I've also bought some of those photo-etched "splatter masks" to experiment with making the cowlings look quite mucked-up.
Lance - you're right - I painted those engine bearers very carefully using that microscope I was telling you about. Glad you approve! Finally got to use that circle cutter I bought in Calgary last June and painted the roundels on the lower wing. The ones on the top wing may be tricky with that thin white outline though....
Cheers,
Gary
-
A bit more progress on the Harry Tate with some markings applied to the sub-assemblies. I used a Flex-I-File circle cutter to make masks for the upper and lower roundels which I airbrushed on. I pre-rigged some of the fuselage cables, noting that there were variances for the cross-bracing directly ahead facing the pilot. Some a/c had double wires (TVAL), some had single (Duxford).

Very good work, Gary. The roundels are terrific. Can you please tell me which colour you have used for them? Tamiya or have you mixes them by yourself? i totally messed up my roundels on my camel and have to paint them new.
Bye,
Manni
-
I agree with the others - beautiful build! I really like the fuselage colour and the way you've managed to get some life into it!
Manni: Gary will of course have to answer your question himself, but I find that Tamiya XF7 and XF8 straight from the bottle work fine for these bright coloured RFC/RAF roundels.
/Fredrik
-
Thanks everybody for your kind comments.
Manni - this would be the first time I've tried painting the roundels on, and as Fredrik suggested the paints I used were the Tamiya XF-7 and XF-X. The only thing I modified was adding a drop of dark brown to the XF-7 Red to tone it down a bit. I also used an off-white for the base white colour by adding a touch of buff or deck tan to the X2 white.
I cemented the bottom wing in place last night, so fingers crossed as I add the upper wing today :-\
Cheers,
Gary

This really is a terrific build - the roundels are excellent (I usually hand paint mine but yours are much better), and the subtle weathering tones add a realistic look.
Stephen.
-
Looking good, Gary. The painted roundels look great.
-
Hi Folks - it took me days to glue on the top wing of the RE.8...indecisiveness, not happy with the fit...bending things slightly to line up just before struts would "snap!" (luckily nothing broke) but it's on and the rigging has started. Using both EZline and the thinner Uschi stuff. Had to add small sections of 0.4mm brass tube to channel the control cable across the top wing. And also am adding small sections of this tubing to act as attachment points for the rigging lines, where they go into the small copper eyelets I made. Lots of patience necessary here.

Wonderful work! I can relate to the rigging trouble though. I've tried all of the mentioned rigging products, Uschi, Modelkasten, Ez-Line etc.
I finally gave up on these 'easy' rigging' types. I have just finished rigging my Felixstowe using monofilament only. Great, I actually enjoyed the rigging process! What?

Marvelous interior painting, Gary. Thanks for sharing your paint mixes for the roundels on the H Tate.
How easy was it to cut the roundel masks using the FlexiFile cutter? I made a cutter using a drafting compass with a blade fitted to it, but still find it hard to cut a smooth circle. (I've asked Santa for a Silhouette cutter for Xmas).
I'll continue to follow along with your work.

Thanks for the kind words on the builds, folks!

I found that the Flex-i-file circle cutter was made well and felt quite solid, and with it's tungsten blade it was fairly easy to cut a big circle. The size-adjusting part is precise. I just had to be careful to apply even, steady pressure and angle as I moved it around - so that the blade started and ended at exactly the same spot. It's the first time I've ever used anything like this and I'm very pleased with it. This was a practice for when I make roundels for the Felixtowe since there's no way I want to deal with decals that big :-)

A further update on my Harry Tate build. I'm forever back-tracking on my projects, forgetting to add markings at the right time, adding small pieces I've missed along the way etc. Had to add the sponsored marking to the side of the cowl on this one after the fact, and therefore had to mask a few things to get the thing toned down (a stark white marking needs a thinned version of the background colour airbrushed over it for scale effect).
Also - one last look at the engine before I button it up!

Yes Terri - I have that book and it was the build of the Roland D.VIa that I saw that technique used to good effect. Both Volumes of the Air Modeller's Guide to Wingnut Wings kits are extremely good references and I keep them by my model bench at all times ;)

Thanks everyone for your encouragement as I try and get the Roland done!
I've added the lower wing, which has been draped with Aviattic 4-colour faded lozenge decal. I've also added the engine cowlings - these were a difficult fit and needed a fair bit of thinning down to look right. No wonder the instructions recommends leaving them off. The spring-hasps that fastened the front to the side cowlings were made with thin copper wire wrapped around a #80 drill bit.

Gary,
With the addition of the painted cowlings, fittings, and the markings the wood finish really becomes more exceptional, such beautiful work! How about those nail lines, a rotary wheel tool? I haven't checked my Kit however I'd speculate that going "plank to plank" would be difficult given the protrusion of the edges.

Hello Ken and Lance - those nail marks are part of the kit. WnW created the tiny depressions quite nicely. I just enhanced them with a touch of thinned oil paint. Lance - you are correct about the lines traversing the woodwork, they get missed as they go over the edge. I did add my own on the top of the fuselage to have some continuation where the joint was sealed.

Hello Fredrik, you ask a very good question. I used to just fold the turnbuckles and paint them, but realized some would open up and get diss-formed during the rigging process. Now I run a bead of cyano glue around the folded pieces which helps in that case. The rigging is attached to the turnbuckles by passing through the line and placing a drop of cyano on the join, then a careful cut the excess off with a brand new #11 blade. In the case of the turnbuckles that are part-way up the line (ie. aileron control cables) I cut off the one folded side of the turnbuckle, and pass the line up and through the holes of the turnbuckle (on the cut-off side) then secure the turnbuckle in place with a drop of cyano at the center after placing it in position. After painting it, highlighting with metalizer, and squinting hard enough, it should look ok.
I do try and fasten the wing-side turnbuckles to the model with a twisted piece of copper wire, making sure that the turnbuckle is free to swivel and line up with the eventual rigged line. There is nothing worse than having a rigged line with the turnbuckle not in alignment with it.
Cheers,
Gary

One of the details it seems often ignored on the Roland D.VIa kit (judging from the "Customers Models" photos on the WnW website) is the control line for the radiator louvers, exiting the cockpit and going up into the top wing. In a couple of cases, photos show this to be a small link chain, and in one instance a simple piece of wire. I made one from photo-etched chain, and made a small port from styrene for the exit, just forward of the cockpit.

Well Terri - that etched chain came from a set of 1/35 scale accessories by Royal Models, who do armour model add-ons. I've had that set kicking around for decades, and keep it handy in my box of tricks. Just for occasions like this. I'm not sure who sells those now, or if Royal Model still exist, since my WWII German AFV modelling days seem a long time ago.
Speaking of details, I noticed (again on the WnW Customer Model page) that it's easy to mix up the rudder and elevator control lines. I almost made the mistake myself - but luckily checked references before I hooked them up. The lines actually cross - here's a pic of the proper configuration...

The Roland D.VIa is now done, completing this thread. I'll try and get some overall views loaded later into the "Completed" section of the forum later today. Thanks to all who took the time to take a look and leave their comments - they were each one very much appreciated!
