Hello this is the first ste by step in this wonderfull forum; by the way, it's my first step by step in English.
My English is quite poor and I'm afrais I won't always be able to say what I want.
If I don't know how to explain what I have done, I will just put the pic ;)
I am doing the Jean Navarre's planes.
As I showed in my presentation I did two of them
the Morane saulnier type N (called bullet by the english if iI'm not wrong)
and his first Ni-11 "bébé", the n°576:
I will present them better in the "Completed models" section.
The plane I will do is Morane Saulnier type L
i will explain the historical context of this plane when I will present it at the "completed models" section
jist say thet Jean join the MS-12 the first french hunter squadron equiped with this plane. With that plane (n°27), He won his first victory (the third of the french army)
However, here is the kit, the old Eduard. As far as I know, there is another one in resin and another one vacuformed.

those kits show the progress Eduard made ;)
well the mout have officialy started!

Great job Xan associated with a very interesting story.
You should try EZ line for the internal rigging. It's very easy to use and well adapted for quarter scale.
Cheers
Pierre
-
Hello to all,
Very good beginning my friend. As Pierre, I think you should use EZline. If you want, I can order to WnW during my next ordering. ;)
Friendly.
Alain.

Very good ideia Pierre, thanks. I will.applied it this.evening
Xan

You have made a very good start Xan, I will be following this build closely.
Des.

The Parasol is an interesting build, Xan. I will enjoy following
your build. You are off to a good start. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Nice start Xan! I like how you have reinforced the PE frames with styrene!
RAGIII

Hello Xan,
the layout is very nice, the Assembly also. It is well done... What more to ask?

Nice beginning and a good story Xan.
Your english is good enough, because mine is also bad.
Martin
-
Hello Xan,
Very nice start! I like the MS type N very much. One of my favourite aircrafts.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hello xan
I know that you love difficulties. Is it really a model to rest you ?
The cutting of the wood fuselage is quite strange and complicated.
I will follow you, I am sure it will be magic
philippe
-
Excellent start, Xan, and your photographic presentation is marvelous. This is going to be a fun build to follow.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Do you use "Piment d'Espelette" for the weathering? ;)
Excellent job as usual with you! Cheers.
-
Hello!
You should try EZ line for the internal rigging.
You were right Pierre and the result is much better then with the photoetched rigging!
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2014/12/20//14122012315118634312808440.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/img.php?i=14122012315118634312808440.jpg)
I will follow you
I hope so, that's why in part I decide to do the step by step in this forum ;)
The cutting of the wood fuselage is quite strange and complicated.
You are right, this wood fuselage is a non sens in the upper side...
I will follow you
I hope so, that's why in part I decide to do the step by step in this forum ;)
here what it looked like
(http://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af290/Edo0606/fusolage02.jpg)
(pic taken in the step by step of the superb parasol of Edo)
http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=794.0 (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=794.0)
anyway the photoetched is a little bit to large for the fuselage, the plastic of the fusselage is very very thick and I 'm thinking that I could take the same way than Edo and rebuild the fuselage...
I have to think a little more...

Hello,
I didn't speak about bibliography:
I have the windsock datafile N°16
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Gf4Vm2U0L._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg)
and the 'icare" revue:

and other generic revue about french air force in the WWI.
In the web, Loocking for additional information, I founded some beautifull pics I would like to share with you:
first two russian parasol pics:

a paradise for weathering lovers! infortunately Navarre's pics don't show plane as dirty :-\
this one, in the same website is lovely too and show unusual point of view of the plane:

Maxime Lenoir tell us whar was this experience at the beginning of 1916:
It was like fishing: a 60 metre wire with at the end a grapnel with dinamyte. when a ennemy plane cross the wire, at the end the grapnel hang on, and with the shock , it detonated dinamyte, so the ennemy plane had to explose...
very pretty idea but it never worked...

Anyway I'm loocking for more documentation if someone have something?
I'm particulary loocking for an "écorché" (I don't know the word in English)
this kind of draw, but for a type L:

Hello xan
very interesting photos ;) cheeks cowling and mobile vickers are awesome
philippe
-
Many interesting pictures and useful sites, thanks ! :)
-
Wow! Great photos. Your model is progressing nicely too.
-
Hello to all and merry christmas everybody
Well i finished the intrerior , even if I'm afraid this one won't win the 2015 cockpit nobel prize .
I added the tank, the tachometer, and the cushions
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2014/12/26//14122611132918634312823942.jpg)
the cockpit don't feed in the fuselage. I scrept it but it wasn't enough so I will glue it in several times...
I will add the upper part of the wooden fuselage when al will be in its place...
that'all for today!
Xan
-
the fuselage is closed, quite a big battle!
as you can see, there is work to be done if I want all that to be presentable, but nothing very hard...
Xan
-
Exceptional job on the interior, Xan! I think it's a winner.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Hello to all,
Well done, I like it !
Au 1/48, ça doit être tout tout petit. ;)

Xan,
Thanks for sharing those wonderful images with us, and your cockpit looks just fine IMHO.
Warren

Exceptional job on the interior, Xan! I think it's a winner.
Cheers,

I agree with my Amigo on this one! Well done Xan! I have been thinking that if I ever try a scratch build in 1/32nd this aircraft would be a good candidate. Your work at least gives me a starting point!
RAGIII

Lovely work on the interior Xan, looking forward to seeing how this shapes up.
Des.

very nice work on a kit that is not to easy. i love it.
-
Very nice work on the interior and it looks great in
place within the fuselage, Xan. I look forward to the
next updates. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Very nice job on the pit , will follow along as you make progress .
Terri

The cutting of the wood fuselage is quite strange and complicated.
you were absolutly right Philippe , so I simplified it:
I had no information about what the upper fuselage looks like..
Just that pic:
there is a big wood piece beside the observer. First I thought it was for the machine gun , and mine had not any machine gun
I had a loook for other Morane Saulnier planes, (aircraft manufacturers often repeat the same system fronm a plane to the other)
the type H in the musée de l'arméee in Paris and the "echarpe blanche" team's replica have this wooden part too.
http://ms-h-garros.blogspot.com.es/2013/06/une-visite-au-musee-de-lair-et-de.html (http://ms-h-garros.blogspot.com.es/2013/06/une-visite-au-musee-de-lair-et-de.html)
http://www.lecharpeblanche.fr/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Morane-Type-H-F-AZMS-0058.jpg (http://www.lecharpeblanche.fr/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Morane-Type-H-F-AZMS-0058.jpg)
The type H is quite close to type L , so I decide to represent it...
in the front, i add a piece of plastic card too (I love to do my models in 3D ;))
well, fuselage have a better look than some days ago, it surely means that we are on the right way ;)
Xan
-
Hello the fuselage is nearly prepared.
I had a lock at the wing.
1) the ringging
Of course in this case of plane it's a central question wich require all the care...
Two years ago I did a morane saulnier type N
(http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2014/12/28//14122810050418634312828242.jpg)
Of course it was a Jean navarre 's plane the next I got after the one I'm doing know
I took the kit in Lyon for a model show. There I met Philippe (Sodium) who was just starting his bullet project...
He told me my mount was not bad but it had a defect the way I represent the ringging:
I knew he was wright
the eyelets are double and not single has I represented them...
Same thing in this type H replic:
here is what it looks like in th type N:
I had to answer that I knew that, but I didn't knew how to represent it.... :-[
Seriosly we spent a very good week-end speaking two days about WWI planes!
Well, the problem was that the type L has the same type of ringging , and this years I will return to Lyon...
My modeler honor was engaged...
I was trying to find I way to represent it but I didn't find anything , just because I was traying to fand a way to represent the ring in twa parts : the boucle in the wing and the ring .
At least II fond a way , and it was quite simple: the same wire will represent all, I used a swab stretched.
Quite logical but it took me a lot of time to find it!
a lot of time to do it so! I will have to do it 24 times! But I find a way and its OK :)
2) the ribs
in the Musée de l'air's type G, wing seems to have wodden rods to reforce and protect the sewing in the ribs:
http://www.mincbergr.net/index.php?page=morane-saulnier-h (http://www.mincbergr.net/index.php?page=morane-saulnier-h)
the same kind of rods seems to appear in the type N
(http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/Ecoles/Avord_Bodin_PT.jpg)
and in the type L too (there is not a lot of pics who shows type L's upside of the wings)
http://pages14-18.mesdiscussions.net/pages1418/aviation-1914-1918/garros-versus-gilbert-sujet_2352_1.htm (http://pages14-18.mesdiscussions.net/pages1418/aviation-1914-1918/garros-versus-gilbert-sujet_2352_1.htm)
it seems there is a light fabric strip upside the wooden rod isn't it
Sir Sodium, du you confirm the presence of those wooden rods? just upside or in the both sides ?
in the "musée de l'air" they painted them in black. I'm thinking about to do the same thing.
Does it make sense in your point of you? (I know I carefull you are with paints interpretations)
those question are either for anybody wha have any idea about this question of course ;)
Xan
-
Xan,
I think your solution to the turnbuckles is perfect, especially for the scale! Your wood panel around the cockpit will look terrific!
RAGIII
-
Very great work Xan.
Martin
-
Hello xan
Very quick and good work. I prefer the new cockpit area.
I have no specific informations about type L. Probably an H family ressemblance.
For the upper side of fuselage, a panel for a luggage compartment I suppose and a fuel tank would be good. You can notice there’s a pump if there’s a tank.
For ringing, I suppose it’s only an "épissure" splice ? . Your model looks good. To represent “attache des haubans” the pressure is now on me ;)
You will find joncs on the both side in natural brown varnish or black paint if you prefer.
amicalement
philippe

In Josef Scott's Eindecker Compendia he discusses the use of split bamboo rods to cover the rib tapes. Maybe the same?
-
it's no so strange:
wikipedia:
The Eindecker was based on Fokker's unarmed Fokker M.5K scout (military designation Fokker A.III) itself following very closely the design of the French Morane-Saulnier H shoulder-wing monoplane, but using chrome-molybdenum steel tubing for the basic fuselage structure instead of wooden components.
Xan

Hello,
it doesn't mean a thing but a I spend many days trying to make disappeared the line between the two half fuselage. when surfacer dried, it appears agian.
Well at last i won:
Anyway I found a beautyfull Guynemer pic in "gallica " website who show a lot of things. I think I'm gone completed my pilot place...

Happy new year to everybody!
the luggage compartment door behind the observer is in its place.
I add in the interior the document holders in black as an oil level nivel that no one will see (to deep , too small... :()
and the landing gear are in place.
Here's what they look like:

first parasols had 7 cylinder Gnome engine too...
Le rhone 9c was a rotary engine; you can see (and ear) one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atMn9s6m-j4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atMn9s6m-j4)
I have the box one and a newer nieuport engine of the same house.
here they are:

of course I will keep the newest one at the left...

I'm whiting for thr 0.3mm drills to prepare the wing ; mean while I staid in the wing.
Morane Saulnier wing have a specificity, the rib seams are protected by wooden rods as it can clearly be seen in the musée de l'air 's type H:
http://www.mincbergr.net/index.php?page=morane-saulnier-h (http://www.mincbergr.net/index.php?page=morane-saulnier-h)
this system appears also in the type N:
http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/Ecoles_Avord.htm (http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/Ecoles_Avord.htm)
as in the type L, wich concern us:

http://albindenis.free.fr (http://albindenis.free.fr)

http://asaviateurs.pagesperso-orange.fr/sesavions.htm (http://asaviateurs.pagesperso-orange.fr/sesavions.htm)
I represent it with stretched plastic (plastique étiré?)
There is still work to be done, sand down, surfacer etc, but I am quite satisfied with the result...
Xan

Excellent work Xan, and I like how you do your research in an outstanding way!

here is the best pic I have:
the principal interest of this pic is to confirm us that it's the same system the type H abd type N; forthose one we have more information
for the type N,this 3D draw fom the "casque de cuir" website:
and for the type H this pic from the musée de l'air plane:
First of all I cut off the plastic axe to remplace it by a metalic one:
for the 4 attachments I use rest of a spitfire photoetched and cut them to give them the good form
this is the result (damned macro)
here is the final result:
the empennage is not yet fixed because I have to add the cranks.
The photetched cranks was adapted to the plastic axe. But with the new one, , I have better to rebuilt them in photoeched , making really losenge with an hole in the middle.
But gosh, no more drills! I wil have to wait the post man...
For the rudder I think the axe is where I did the red line , but I have to think more the best way to do it...

Again, gorgeous work and great research on a build that is not easy Xan. (Paint.net . . . . got it! I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!)

RAGIII

Exzellent work to all Details. Love it.

Thanks a lot Sodium for those pics. I imagined something like that...
Today a little work:
as in the pic of the echarpe blanche replic, Eduard gives little photoetched rectangle fot the holes inn the fuselage for the empennage commands
(http://i38.servimg.com/u/f38/11/75/01/94/diapos11.jpg)
locking at the pics (type H of the museum and old type L picture), I saw they were much more big and circular:
when I started painting the fuselage in fabric color gunze H316 randome, the peint put in evidence the ocean of glue I used to fix the photoetched parts.
So I decide to take it of I do it more conform to reality (even is paralelism is quite strange)
I received the 0.3mm drills, I'm going now to do a plenty of holes in the wing!!!

wood pannel: Prince August ocre yellowfor the base and oil raw sienna
Metal panel under the engine: alclad black alu

Thank you des!
Speaking about painting , we have a parasol autochrome:
The color are quite pale (the fabric as the the wood pannel)
I prefere to take as reference the MAE museum typa G as their Ni-11.
I tried to represent the varnish not spraid out in a regular way., like the Nieuport fuselage fabric...
for this i used Gunze H66 quite diluted.
I went on the pannel wood too...

thank you to all, new and old friends!
I decided to have a watch on the wing...
I told you anout the wooden rods I wanted to represent:
I observed too that in morane planes (type L as type N) ther was a light strip under the wooden rod (a coton protection).
I decided to represent it too...
so, same recipe than in the fuselage:
base gunze H318 radome
gunze H66 RLM 79 very diluted
radome + white for the strip:
of course , to do it I first had to mask the wing, and it's looooonnng work...
furthermore, I have to mask all the wing again for the black wooden rods, the never ending story!
;)

Beautiful work on the wings, Xan! Just be grateful it's not a triplane! ;)

Martin
-
Yeah Xan! Black is black! :D :D
-
Hi Jean and thanks radio!
Just be grateful it's not a triplane! ;)
you're right Bud really...
at the beginning after another loooong time masking, I was quite happy seeing the bees camouflage , thinking that Navarre could have like it...
When I took off the masks, I changed of humor...
black has passed under the mask and the general result was quite hugly...
here what it will look like more or less.
only one solution, let the models some days and all restart again...
it's not the first time I do it, as all of you surely...
but later I thought the giant roundels could give me a favor becase they go on the worst stripes...
have o look:
il I do again the red marked stripe it could be acceptable.
anyway if the result is not good , I can allway restart all the wing painting...
oh, the model...

Hello!
I went on with the fuselage:
first with the engine and the cover:
the horizontal stabilizer and the tail prop:
to end the fuselage part, I have to do:
- the rudder (wich is started as you can see in the picture)
- the roll kontrol system
- the two windschields
- the two footboards (?) I lost in the battle
-the propeller
Meanwhile, the wing came back to the beginning.
a friend of mine gave another way to do it wich will be much better...

a friend of mine told me another way to paint the wing, here are the differents steps:
when I get off the stripes , I was quite satisfied with the result:
I have to micromesh the jonction between ribs protections and fabric, so I will wait until tomorrow.
Meanwhile I wanted to try a new thing: PVC scotch:
I like the result , but perheaps I will try to make them thiner those one are 0,5mm.

a general view:

comparing with the first try:

This morning work:
I could cut 0,3mm strips
here 's the result:
the problem is that I don't know if "future" or varnish will be enought to fix the strips...
this afternoon , I will try tamiya scotch cutted and painted to compare...
Xan

Hallo Xan, fantastic work of yours... I love it!

Hello,
yesterday, I put the stripes and fix them with future , and it make me good result in my opinion:
today investigation about the roundels...
in 1912 the first notification about the french roundels says it had to do 1 metre diameter.
here they are:
this is the plane I 'm doing, the n°27:
the rudder isn't painted in french colors, ant it has got big roudels (1,6m) in underwings, but what about upper wing?
Looking pictures I realize in the begining of the war 1914/1915, the parasols had not roudels un upper wing (it was much more important to be seen from the ground than from the sky)
her some exemples:
I think the early type L of Navarre had to be like that.
so roundels only in underwing , but wich color?
It's easy: we don't have any information about the early Morane saulnier blue colors (each productor used is own colors)
i take as reference this caudron autochrome:
I use Misterkit color:
and this is what I did:
the wing is done , I have know to do the wind shield, quite a hard stuf...

RAGIII

than you my lord!

Great research = great results. (FWIW, I like the Misterkit versions for the red and blue of the roundels, etc. I only wish Eduard has used similar colors instead of that horrible purple that is on my kit decals.) >:( >:( :( :(

Simply gorgeous, Xan! The tapes and the roundels are magnificent!

I will have now to do 24 turnbuckles...

Thanks to all of you!

Yes I did. I didn' like the decals colors , neither the size, furthemore they were bad quality, brittle.

I dowloaded maps at 1/35 I think in the web, and I resize them.
If you want them , it will be a pleasure to send you them bay PM
This afternoon I did the weathering of the fuselage (I restart three time...)
well that is what I did:
I used AK's aircraft engine oil diluated applied with the airbrush
next operation, the propeller...

Outstanding work on the Turnbuckles and fuselage ! This is without a doubt the best L I have seen built!

Xan,
This is just a beautiful, amazing build. With each post it keeps getting better and better!
As to the roundels, I'm afraind when I get started, I'm going to have to start painting them eventually. I don't know why manufacturers do what they do with French roundels. Those of us that like French a/c just can't catch a break. ;)

well another update:
first orf all, trying the propeller , I notice the engine was too deep, so:
then, I did the engine oil beside the fuselage.

As you can see in the picture, I ended the "systeme de gauchissement" ssystem to turn the wings.
here is the original:

You are doing a superb job Xan, the oil staining on the fuselage is brilliant. Now comes the fun part of any WW1 build, the rigging (it's the best part for me), looking forward to seeing it fixed in place.

Terri
-
very nice xan. your rigging is perfect.
-
Thank you again for your nice
I ended the downside rigging who was colled fly rings (haubans de vol).they kept the wings in the air. The upside rings were called landing ring (haubans d'atterrissage) and the kept the wing in the ground, as Sodium explain me.
the ring size were 5mm , and was thinner upside.
I used 0,1mm nylon fishline, adn I will use 0,008mm in upside.
Well here are the pictures:

I finally got myself caught up, Xan... really lovely build! You clearly have a deft touch with the airbrush, and a great vision for how to achieve the results you want.
Chris

Wahou! The result is very delicate! It is a marvel! The final result is eagerly awaited!

thank you all!
I attack the upside:
here is the reference (always the MAE's type H)
the first ring; it's quite hot because the same ring goes in the both side of the wing wit a turnbuckle in the middle and cross the pulley...
The first one is done and I'm quite happy I succed it, so two pics!

Hi Xan,
It is looking great! How do you do the turnbuckles in the middle of the line? do you use a melted plastic tube from Qtips and thread the line through it?
Thanks
