WW1 Aircraft Modeling => What's New => Topic started by: Des on July 12, 2016, 02:44:27 PM

The French GB ends on the 18th July so I have started preparations for our new GB.
The new group build will be a WW1 Diorama GB. I am still in the planning stages but this is what I have so far.
Any scale and any kit manufacturer will be acceptable, scratch builds are more than welcome
The diorama can consist of WW1 aircraft, artillery, armour, vehicles or a combination of all subject
Any size diorama big or small will be allowed
Dioramas consisting of figures alone are also acceptable, ground crew working, soldiers, sailors and airmen relaxing etc.
Ample time will be given to allow members to complete their dioramas.
A full build log is not essential but progress photos would be great.
I will write up a complete list of rules over the next few days, already I have five of the forum shop owners offering prizes for the GB and I personally will add to the prize pool.
I am asking for expressions of interest to determine if this will be a goer, I feel that this GB will encompass all aspects of WW1 and will be a fitting celebration for the WW1 centenary.

Thanks Des
I'm happy to put my name in as a GB participant for this one. Lots of leeway for subject matter so a good motivator to take part.

I'll be in Des but you know my ability not to complete Group builds will be a factor... or complete anything... ::) ;)
Such a wide range of subjects it's hard to find a reason not to.

Hey Des!
This sounds as a great idea!
I'd like to join, but I'm asking if already started build will be allowed.
Thank you
ciao
Edo

As with all my group builds Edo already started builds are allowed to enter. Lets make this the biggest and best GB ever.
Des.
-
WWI Diorama groupbuild? Great, I'm in :)
Borsos

Figures will not be compulsory, the components of your GB diorama will be entirely up to the individual.
Des.
-
Des,
you are aware that over on LSM a "diorama GB" is already running, strongly supported by WNW and via the "WNW fanclub"-facebook community, aren't you? I am concerned the post over there would simply be repeated here, without any real gain in the end.
Stefan
-
Count me in! Yeah, LSP have diorama groupbuild, but it's restricted to wnw kits.
Mikko
-
This is the reason I am starting this new WW1 Diorama GB, it is not restricted to Wingnut kits only and opens the field up for everyone and includes any scale. I am not a member of the Wingnuts Fan Club simply because Wingnuts have never supported this forum in any shape or form. Some builds will be repeated but what the heck, we are all free agents and can post builds where ever we like, I feel this new GB will be a big success because we have a large group of very talented members and we build a variety of scales including armour, artillery, vehicles, figures and aeroplanes. This new GB has the support of four of the forum shops so far and they have kindly offered prizes, I will also add to the prize pool.

Wonderfull idea Des.
Truly inclusive, not exculsive.
This has all the possibilities of the best GB yet, anywhere.
And it's gunna be great! :)
-
Des,
please don't get me wrong. I will happily take part in that Group Buiild, prices offered or not, if i can find some free time for it. I am just under the impression, looking at "the other group build" (which is supposed to be open for everyone), that the majority of entries come from a few members that seem to be performing a "Materialschlacht", putting huge amounts of materiel into a single build, thus deterring modellers working on a budget (like me) from participating. i hope that won't be the case here, as well.
Stefan
-
In this day and age Stefan I think most of us are working to a budget, me included, that is why my new WW1 Diorama GB will appeal to the majority of our members. This GB will cater for all modelers whether a beginner or an expert, it will cover all scales and all building mediums and best of all it is not restricted to just one model manufacturer, it will be a very fair GB and open to everyone, I think Boggie hit the nail on the head - truly inclusive, not exclusive.
Des.
-
I don't do figures, nor have I ever done a diorama but I can still see an opportunity to participate, albeit with a very small Diorama which is nothing more then an enhanced and more elaborate display base. It's all about participating in the group effort with an individual contribution, and in this format everyone has something they could offer. I think it's a brilliant theme!
Cheers,
Lance

I like the idea Des! Plenty of Latitude to include all! I think I will just roll over the Salmson build and include the planned Aviattic figures in a diorama setting.

PS: My GB finish rate is right there with Keith :-[

Stefan, it's not the amount of things you can put in a diorama that makes it work, often the best are really quite simple but well thought out. Besides that build it for the pleasure & experience and the joy of sharing it with friends. ;)
-
yea! I definitely agree with Keith!
As my wife says it is not the measure that matters! :-X
ciao
edo ;)

You can have all amount of aftermarket stuff and still being shitty modeller.;) In dioramas it's all about idea, idea and idea and how you bring it to viewer. And good diorama don't need figures to be good diorama. I'm very low of budget cause I'm unemployed, so i don't have much money for aftermarket. And what I can't improve with money, I do it old school. ;) Let's do this!

I would really like to commit to this GB too! My record of finishing GB's is poor - on this forum kind of 100% - life gets in the way - so I really have sympathy with all those who struggle to get to the finish line! But it sounds so interesting I must enter something, the prizes are attractive, I have nothing planned yet but a fertile imagination, and I will finish my French GB entry... (sometime!!) Regards, Marc

I have found the fastest, easiest diorama idea which caters for those on a tight budget.
My GB will be a display base board with nothing on it but a card with the words 'My diorama of Wingnut Wings resin ground crew working on the new Wingnuts BE2c". ....

I'm in! :D

I have a few (gasp!) new Takom kits just waiting for attention, so please put my name down, too!

HoHoHo.......oh I'm in!
And yes its all about ideas and sometimes simplicity is all it takes sometimes to tell a story.
Here's one of mine (the only one) to get the juices flowing!

This is the beauty of the new GB, you can make your diorama as simple or as complicated as you wish, just one or two elements or a combination of many, let your imagination run wild and create your own scene or recreate an original WW1 scene, every diorama will tell a story.
We now have five of the forum shops who have kindly offered prizes for the GB, many thanks to Richard at Aviattic, Lukasz at Taurus Models, Edgar at CSM, Bo Monroe at Flugzeugwerke and Costas at GasPatch Models, I will also be adding something to the prize pool.

Brilliant. Reminds me of a small base someone built years ago, showing just a print of boots in an area of mud, called "Frodo wearing the One Ring"

Great Idea Des... Perhaps I can actually finish a GB for once lol
-
It's about time for my first diorama and first GB ;D Thanks for the subject, accessible for everybody!

You can count me in!

I'll join in - my first ever group build. Should be fun and will motivate me to start a 'on the shelf idea'.
Cheers

Put me down as a tentative maybe. I always enjoy the GBs on this forum, so I'll probably join in just for the sheer joy of participation. So far, all I've managed in the way of a diorama is a grass mat with a model plunked down in the middle of it.
Cheers,
Bud

Bud. Well, Bud, despite my grandest intentions, I ain't even got that far.....best laid plans and all that
. .....so, thanks for the impetus to try again, Des....sign me up. -M

I'll give it a try. I have few things that would be fun to do.

I found this by chance in the stash and thought it might do for inspiration (on the basis: if there are no pictures it didn't really happen) and it is a delightful, but fairly old production: based on a James Dietz painting:

Beautiful moulding and still available. I'm not sure if my figure painting skills are up to this one....

I am like Lance. I have been meaning to add figures to the Ago which I submitted to the Floatplane GB last year and have still not done so. I will build another model instead and this time I will add some figures…. and the base will be very simple indeed.
I'm in. It is the taking part that counts: not the winning.
Stephen.

Monty,
"based on a James Dietz painting:"
Great looking figure. I love Dietz's work, he really catches the atmosphere of his scenes. I have his "Final Analysis" Hanging above me as I type this, the only subject in my den without an aircraft featured. This plan of yours has a lot of great potential, I'll be following your progress with lots of interest and anticipation! :)

Still available? Where, please?

They do the other figure with the Lewis as well.... Search 'time machine miniatures' and you can find their site.

Des, I would like to take part in the GB.
But, I have almost ready model Fokker D-VII from WNW. It is presented here.
http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=4540.0
My Polish colleagues, when they saw my model, advised me not to install covers of the engine, because it looks very nice.
I decided to make a diorama before appeared here proposition of the GB. It will be my first diorama.
I already have some parts purchased, among other things, I have known here Aviattics figurines and WW1 German cart from fuel . Some things such as. ladders, I'm going to to do it myself.
Des I have a question, whether with almost finished model can take part in GB?
Adam.

No problems at all Adam, you are quite welcome to join the GB with your model, looking forward to seeing your diorama.

Adam, your name has been added to the list of starters, welcome aboard.

Unless I missed reading , is there a time line figured yet ? This just might be the motivation I need for a WW 1 build and maybe base this on a figure this time round ...
Terri
-
Hi Terri, would love to see you join the GB. As stated in the rules the GB has already started and will run for a minimum of 9 months, depending on how builds are going this could be extended to 12 months, this will give everyone fair opportunity to complete their builds.
Des.
-
Des,
where do we start posting our Diorama GB posts?

http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?board=97.0
This is where you start a new topic with your GB.
Des.
-
Thank you Des! Posted.
-
I'm not normally a group build guy but I was quick to put my name in for this one because the Forum deserves solid support from members and it's time we started to show more actual model building rather than just being Wingnut Whingers :)
Now comes the hard part - what to build? I'm leaning toward 1/48th scale and maybe also a 1/35th ground scene? The fun is in choosing.
A big plus is the fact we have at least 9 months to finish and we don't have to provide build logs, just progress pix. Excellent!

Thanks Des for the reply :) The time frame works for me . I almost finished the three 32 scale kits I'm building to honor my father . Finishing up the Corsair and just have the Mustang left . I'm averaging 3 months per kit . Should be able to start in October so , yup put my name down as well Des
Terri

Thanks Terri, your will be added to the list of starters.
Des.

Des,
Please add my name to that list. I've picked up quite a few Great War kits in 1/35 scale that I've been needing a reason to build, and this is as good an excuse as any to get started. Thinking about a way to include some aviation in there as well.
