Here is my latest work on this one. I have decided to try and keep this simple. I used Mars Black and Titanium white to create the grey in oils. I spotted the color on, then spread it out over the figure using a wide blending brush. I then used raw umber as a shadow color and Titanium white to highlight. This left things a bit stark so I went back with a mix of the grey and raw umber to blend things in a bit more. I will add some deep shadows and high highlights.

Patrick,
Thanks for your overgenerous comment! I am trying to keep this one simple. I am using very basic formulas and techniques keeping the mixes and number of colors used to a minimum!

The latest update:
I have fixed the HARSH shadows and base coated the straps. I used a simple mix of Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber and white for the straps. Next up the final coat on the straps along with shadows and highlights.

Thanks Ernie, the shading/shadows and Highlights have been challenging. Don't see things the way I used to and when Macro Photography gets involved it becomes a lot of second guessing and touch up  :o :o

Here is the latest update: The belts have been outlined with burnt umber, just a little touch up needed after looking at the Macro Photos. The black leather belt has been painted using Mars Black and Titanium white highlighted with Mars orange over a brown acrylic base. Finally, the face has been started/almost finished. The eye is a polyscale blue. the flesh is Shep Paines Easy Mix of three colors: Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, and Gold Ochre! I haven't used this simple formula in years but it works and that's all that counts.!!

Great job Rick!  I really like what you've done with oils.  I'll have to give them a try.  Seems like many folks use Vallejo acrylics nowadays, but I have trouble getting them to blend as well as oil-based paints.  Just rookie misteps I guess.  :)

Anyway, very fine work!  ;D

Bob

Thanks for all of the very kind comments! A little update:
The face is finished and the head has been glued on the figure. I have painted the buckles and toned down a little of the shadows around the belts.

Lovely work, great execution.
Though it does bring back the sad feeling I had when Manta Figurines called it a day last year, that guy's an excellent sculptor.
Looking forward to seeing that diorama!

Thanks Mark! Yes, Christophe is indeed a Talented sculptor! The sad thing is that I know he is still sculpting French and probably Lafayette Escadrille pilots for himself!

He is? That's frustrating to hear! Maybe he and Richard Aviattic should get together and work something out...
Oh well, I'm glad he's still creating :)

In my last contact with Christophe he mentioned he was working on Navarre, I think, and he Loves the Lafayette Flyers so had plans to do them for his collection.

PS: I did give Christophe Richards E Mail addy so I am assuming There was no interest on Christophes part?
