I just can't help myself and come at the end of the month I will have plenty of time on my hands and with the Camel almost finished up .
Armed with scale drawings and resized to 48 , the wings and struts will be scratched built and for the pit , well just have to see where that leads me .
Terri
-
Terri,
I’m ready for the show. This will be another great one.
Kevin
-
Looking forward to this, Ma'am.
An interesting project.
-
Gee Kevin , I hope you have your popcorn and Pepsi , this could be entertaining enough de under ..it's epic !!!! ( in a echoing voice )
And I do hope that you aren't one of those coke lovers of such ....man that is nasty stuff ! Last time I had a glass of coke I ended up with ice clubs up my nose . Let me tell you , tossed a monkey wrench in my even plans ;)
Oldman , I do have a few interesting Triplanes in the stash . They are rather neat and then there are some real questionable ones . Glad to have you tagging a long :)
Terri
-
Will stay riveted to the screen, as always!

Oh Terri, this would call for a mini Group Build :)
I also plan to build this Triplane but with a Eduard Profipack as base and with help by the SPIN model conversion kit:
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/spin-model-k4804-nieuport-triplane-ni-17-fuselage--627008
SPIN released some triplane conversion kits, the Pfalz Experimental I build already and there is another set for the Nieuport 10.
The 10 Triplane was done prior the 17.
According to wikipedia there were two 17 and one converted from 17bis, there is also a good quality picture linked.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nieuport_Triplane
Same info on French Aircraft book, two with 110hp Le Rhone 9J (one was N1388) and one with 130hp Clerget (N521)
The drawings of both 17 are different (see the page below)
Another page with pictures and drawings in Russia:
https://flyingmachines.ru/Site2/Crafts/Craft25741.htm
But I'm working to slow for a group build. Your bird would be ready if my fuselage halves are glued together ::)
So I will watch and learn for my (later) build.
Have fun,
Frank
-
OOOh it looks as though the triplane craze has been resurrected after a century! I will be following along with this one too - most interesting and completely new to me (surprised?)
Stephen.
-
Hi Frank ,
Spin Models has a few neat subjects for conversions and other kit's as well . Thanks for the links , already have been rounding up info for the build but I still need to see if I will have enough decals . Haven't even looked yet ! I do a few PE items for the pit , but I just might scratch build it all .
Stephen , I would say you started the craze , I'm just following your lead ;)
Terri
-
Terri, good point with the decals!
I merged the decal sets of two Profipacks, so I hope those will be enough.
The plan is to convert the other Profipack into a Nieuport as shown in a WWI Comic as for that project I need special decals (as usual, a lot more ideas than time) ::)
Cheers,
Frank
-
This will be a special build, Terri! Enjoy! Regards, Marc.
-
Hey Frank ,
I'm covered for markings if I go with a PC scheme , It will go with my Sopwith Triplane .
Thanks Marc :)
Terri
-
Haven't forgotten about this one and will get started soon just waiting for a few items . A member has kindly offered Spin Models Conversion and a friend has sent me a replacement engine and gun . :)
Terri
-
With the evil camel out of hair I made a start on getting the parts needed for the cockpit and other items freed and ready for clean up . Also finally found my datafile on the Nieuport 17 ! I have a dimple on the right side of the fuselage near the tail which will need to addressed . Having build this kit many times before this is a first for me with a dimple . The halves fit very well still and will be easy cleaning up the seams later . Still waiting for the wings to show up in the mail but I did have another donation for this build show up . Vectors Le Rhone 110 - 120 h.p. Oberursel Ur.II and Gaspatchs French Vickers :) . I'm hoping the engine will fit inside the cowl with out to much issues .
Terri
-
:)
-
I've got that conversion too Terri, looking forward to this build extremely.
Cheers,
Dave.
-
Thanks Dave , glad to have you following along . :)
Terri
-
Terrific parts prep Terri! Looking forward to seeing it all come together!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ,
Will make a start on some of the smaller items until the wings show up .
Terri
-
My wings have arrived !
Work has begun on the interior by adding some more of the framing . I'm not sure if this type had the rear bulk head . Part of the frame work would have been change for the top wing struts .
Once the top wing is in place not much of the pit will be notice so I won't be going gun -ho with the details ;) There is a part missing from the Eduard kit and that is the spent cartriage shoot so this I will have to make .
Terri
-
:)
-
Nice start T! I think I have that spent ammo chute but you can probably make one in the time it would take to get to you. That being said let Me know!
RAGIII
-
Hey Rick , thanks for dropping by and having a peak :) That is a very kind offer Rick , but you right . I will have one made in no time . I have a plan of attack now on the details to add and change so i should have some progress in a few days .
This is a kit a wish Eduard would re-tool ..
Terri
-
Terri, I hope the quality of your Spin Model conversion set is ok!
I just checked mine and there a re no bubbles on the wings. The struts could be better, but I will replace them by wood anyway.
Do you know that picture? It is the best quality one of that Triplane I know!
https://www.airteamimages.com/nieuport-triplane_6686_france---french-air-force_144640_large.html
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hi Frank ,
Yes I have this photo already saved and you are right . It is the clearest showing just how thin the wings are . No issue at all with the resin wings . No air bubbles or short shot and the lower wing fits perfect ! I was expecting to have to do a fair bit of sanding , but this is not the case .
Made a start on the floor by thinning the towards the rear on the underside so this sits lower . Areas on the side and middle of the heel plates was removed and new details added and a brass pin/nut for the rudder bar . Front part for the control column support is under way which is still a work in progress . So far this is what I was able to get done today .
Terri
-
Looks Great Terri!
RAGIII
-
Wow! nice additions.
-
Thanks Rick and Ken for tagging along and for the positive feedback :)
Terri
-
Today's progress was finishing the control column support and seat support and both are fixed in place , now the control column itself is next .
Terri
-
Terri, that is a amazing enhancement!
It seems you really want to know it how far you can go in that scale ;)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Your addition to the interior is looking Fantastic T!
RAGIII
-
Thanks guys :)
Frank , pushing the limits ? I haven't even started yet ! ;) That's for the Pfalz D8 I'm building now !
Terri
-
I haven't even started yet !
That floor is amazing! I can say that, because I build that Eduard Ni-17 kit already, as "Flyboys" here in the forum.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Frank , yes I remember your build . You did a super job on her . This is my third N-17 in this scale , but those I built out of the box ( weekend editions ) .
The floor is basically done other then control wires and a bit of rigging . This will get install once paint and such have been applied . The rear part of the control column slips on and off to easy with the painting and haven't glued this yet . I also made that wheel thing for that empty ammo belt .
Terri
-
:)
-
That is awesome work Terri! The seat in particular looks Terrific!
RAGIII
-
Thank-you very much Rick but I can't take credit for the seat . I thought I have a spare PE one but that turned out to be false until I found this resin one in the parts bin which I think is from the Bluemax kit of the M-5 flying boat .
Terri
-
Terri,
It looks like you're setting the standard for Nieuport cockpits in 1/48th scale.
Very nice!
Kevin
-
Thanks Kevin for having a peak :)
I didn't do much on this today other then spray the gloss black on the engine cylinders and crank case . While this is drying for a few days there is still plenty to get me busy .
Terri
-
Progress is progress even if it is a small amount Terri!
RAGIII
-
You are right Rick . I have the details work out for the engine controls and started making the parts for it . :)
Terri
-
This afternoon was spent constructing the engine control panel with the glass tube for the fuel shut off will get install once painting and installing it . Knowing me I will ruin it with paint . I had to rob the mounting frame for the controls from another kit . I was cleaning up the Eduard part and ended up making a mess out of it .
Terri
-
Awesome Terri!
RAGIII
-
Beautiful ultra-fine additions in the cockpit, Terri... I was looking at an Eduard kit yesterday, so I have some idea of just how much extra small and refined detail you have added... Well done! Marc.
-
Thank Rick and Marc for the kind comments :)
Terri
-
Beware of the people you associate with - it rubs off ... ;D
Great detail work!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Frank ;)
Terri
-
Today I work on getting rest of the details made . Ammo bin , tac , shell ejection tube , and some more frameing . Cross bar in front of pilot and behind the seat a few cross members set back to line up with the top wing struts .
Up next ...paint !
Terri
-
Nice scratchbuilding and detailing. I think ww1 planes in 1:32 aren't to big so i have a lot of respect for people who are building in a smaller scale and adding a lot of details like you do.
-
Great scratchbuilding, T.
If you haven't built the engine yet, and there's a question of whether it will fit in the cowling, you may consider shortening the cylinders at the base. The pushrods will need to be adjusted, but seems it would be easy. I'm considering doing this on future builds to ensure the cowling fits round the engine.
-
As usual your scratch built additions are looking great Terri!
RAGIII
-
I am still trying to get over the fact that the designers of this machine were not on something exotic at the time!
The extra details look super Terri - only problem is will we be able to see them when it is finished?
Stephen.
-
Thanks guys for the kind comments :)
Was a good day with the airbrush and got a fair bit done . Wood effect I used pencil crayons and a dray brushing with paint using Tamiya red brown . Side walls , seat and struts I sprayed them Tamiya clear yellow while the lower wing , floor and ammo bin Taniya clear orange with a touch of smoke . These were built up in layers and will need a few days to fully harden . A wash will be applied and a final sealing coat . While that is drying I make a start on painting some of the smaller details and can jump to other parts for clean up and detailing . Engine is also painted minus the induction pipes and I still have to make the push rods .
Ken , I'm about to start getting the engine built and will do a test with three of the cylinders , I don't mind if I have to thin the cowl . Really don't want to have to lose the engine detail .
Stephen , yes most of it will not been seen , but I know it's there and it's good to keep up ones skills ;)
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
-
Nothing like the smell of paint to get the juices flowing . Was able to get the detail painting done on the cockpit parts and ready to start the weathering once the paint has fully dried .
Wood grain effect continues on the wing struts and the prop is ready for a few coats of clear orange tinted with a touch of brown .
While some of this stuff was curing the openings for the control wires were cleaned out and hinge detail added with a hinge bar replacing the Eduard molding . Once the hinges where dry I sanded them back a bit to smooth out the edges . Under carriage legs work on as well . Cutting out the axle bar plates took a few tries before I cut the cut out right .
The engine will not fit inside the cowl and will have to be thinned . Before that starts the part which makes up the cooling holes needed to be glued in place and the outer seems cleaned up . That is now done and I can start the thinning process .
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
-
You have been quite busy Terri! I love the wood effect, especially the hint of the slanted strips in the forward portion. The details you have added are fantastic as always!
RAGIII
-
Hi Rick , thanks for the very kind comments and for tagging along still :)
I was surprised at how much I did . I only spend a few hours in the afternoon . After getting laid off I figured I would have more bench time to work on projects ...I was wrong ::)
With it being a small scale I was figuring that just a hit of the slanted effect on the sides would be better . Don't think it would look right with more of the effect added .
Terri
-
Terri, I would call that a big progress! Beautiful enhancements and painting. Really pity, that many things will be hidden between three wings and a fuselage.
I have so many kits crying "Start me!" and this is one of them ::) ???
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Frank :)
True that must of the pit won't been seen once the top wing is in place , but at different angles some can be viewed ;)
Terri
-
Beautiful internal details Terri.
Stephen.
-
Thanks for the kind comment Stephen :)
Weathering complete and wiring bracing is finished on the right side of the fuselage . Rudder bar and control column are mounted with their control wires . A seat cushion was made up with plastic card and seat belts are from the spare part box .
Next up-date I should have rest of the rigging and parts in place with the halves closed up .
Terri
-
:)
-
A fine looking interior, Terri. You're making good progress on this one.
-
Fine Terri, but please do not forget to clean the glue line on the fuselage halves!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Terri,
Looks like you have touched all the bases in the cockpit. Like I've said before, you are setting the standard
for Nieuport builds.
Kevin
-
Beautiful job on the innards, T!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks a lot for dropping by with positive comments , they mean a lot :)
Frank , no worries the glue edges will be free of paint before gluing . ;)
Terri
-
Here is the last look of the pit before the halves are glued together forever and ever !!! I didn't have to trim anything to get stuff to fit . All of the framing matches the other side :o
Halves are glued up and yes Frank all of the edges are cleaned up of paint before gluing ;) Lower wing is also glued in place and this is set aside to dry over night . Then the body work can start . All of the top mounting locations for the struts need to be filled . There are a few more details to add and sure but more on those later .
Terri

:) Up-date starts on the end on last page ;)

That interior is absolutely amazing...and now it is gone ::) Lovely work T!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick :)
Even though that nothing will be seen . I'm glad that I did add the detail , really enjoyed myself and found it to be relaxing .
Terri
-
Seems have been address which turned out to be quick work . This will get polished out once the the decking is filled . The lacing will get lost in the process but I do have PE to use for replacing that detail .
Terri
-
:)
-
Excellent Terri. I am looking forward to the next two wings 8)
RAGIII
-
Even though that nothing will be seen . I'm glad that I did add the detail ,
... and we all know it is there! 8)
really enjoyed myself and found it to be relaxing.
That is the most underestimated and the most important part of the game!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Rick and Frank :)
I filled the front strut mounting locations last night with bits of plastic card . To really pack the hole once the piece is in place I go back over it a few times more with Tamiya extra thin , using the back of the knife handle I press the plastic down until it totally fills it in . Sand this will give a pretty finish then using putty .
Now I can start with more sanding
Terri
-
Your are working fast on this one Terri - I can barely keep up with you. There is no loss of quality of finish though.
Stephen.
-
There is some stunning modelling happening here, Terri! Great progress.... ATB, Marc.
-
Thank you Stephen and Marc :) 8)
Bit more progress done today . The holes are filled on the top decking and sanded smooth . The stitching will be added once the engine and cowl issue is resolved . The engine needs a fair bit of the cylinders removed , but I will thin down the inside on the cowl first . The pencil marks on the fire wall is for the oil tank placement which i still need to cut out of card and sand to shape .This is the only detail I will add to this area , nothing else will be seen . While I was at it I also made up valve stems for the wheels .
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
-
:)
-
Okay , I came up with a very cunning plan on how to make the engine fit inside the cowl . I spent a few hours thinning the inside down to the point that it is almost paper thin ...okay two sheets thin ;) But what about the engine !!! Out came the saw and i cut off the flange and removed part of the lower cylinder , a fair bit was removed . and glued back on top of the flange and it now fit's inside the cowl . I managed to break off three off the rocker arms so those will face up wards in the cowl . Fuselage is polished and the rest of the details have been started . For the lacing I used taiya cut cut 2mm in with and Eduards PE for the rest and wipe up an oil tank .
Terri
-
:) up-date starts on end on last page

:) :) :)

:)
-
Very good, Terri!
Glad to see you'll stop a nothing to tame this one.
Kevin
-
That is some nice surgery on the engine and cowling. When I saw the pic in reply 88 I thought it would never gonna fit but you did a great job.
-
Nice engine work. You must have remembered post 49. ;)
I may have said it before, but the interior looks great!
-
Excellent work as always Terri. Adding the oils tank to the firewall is a terrific detail!
RAGIII
-
Thanks for dropping by guys with positive feed back :)
Back in my early years in modeling adventures I built a lot of WW 2 subjects and used resin engines , pit's and other items plus a lot of scratch building . This is what I did on getting engines to fit in those builds . Might be a bit more filing but you lose less detail buy only remove a few rows of the cooling fins .
Really didn't get much done of anything today . While adding rivet detail to the chin pan I crack the join twice !!! Just in front of the resin wing ::) That has been repaired and she is up on her legs drying as I type this .
Terri
-
Great work!
That engine seems a bit out of scale! My Small Stuff engine was also to big, but not that amount.
I was lazy and took brass for the oil tank right away, so I didn't have to paint that. And nothing looks like brass than brass.
But yes I know, I'm more the metal and you more the polystyrene worker ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Frank ,
Nothing wrong with taking the easy way at all ;) :)
Past few days have been productive in front of the bench . Main under carriage legs are wrap up and the tail skid got details as well . Rest of the fuselage details are on and the top wing struts are mounted . These are replacements made out of contrail strut . Middle wings are also pinned and test fitted and I can say thumbs up on that . just no pick yet . Only items left is doing something about the miss-match mount locations on the under side of the top wing and finish getting the engine put together .
Terri

You were quite busy Terri! The Tail skid looks Fantastic! Nice qork on the struts also. She looks nice sitting on the gear!
RAGIII

Oh, there seems to be a race between the Pfalz and this Triplane! Great progress, already on the own legs.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Looking very fine Terri. I am waiting to see what this is going to look like in model form with the third wing. I thought that my current project was odd, but your is doubly so!
Stephen.
-
This is looking really great, Terri! Your usual awesome detailing... Regards, Marc
-
Very nice work so far, Terri. You're making great progress. I've never been a big fan of the Nieuport, but find this build is inspiring.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Thanks guys ! 8)
-
Work has continued our the past few days and was able to get items primed and painted . I used Vallejo white alum from their metal coat range . Have the wood to do on the tail skid and rest of the details will get painted then off to clear coating for decals !
Terri
-
That is nice, really nice!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Wow Terri, You are really Rocking on this one! Looks Marvelous!
RAGIII
-
Super finish Terri. It will not be long before you fit the wings now.
Stephen.
-
Hi guys and thank you very much :).
I did start some of the detailing with paint being applied , but it will be bit longer before I get this done .
I will be away for awhile , have some stuff right now which needs my attention more then my hobby I'm not doing very well emotionally . But I will be back soon .
Thanks guys
Terri
-
Really nice job, Terri and good luck!!!!!! Hurry back too. We all need our Terri fixes.
Dan
-
Looking very, very good Terri! I love the colour and the details... Life does get in the way of modelling, doesn't it? But we hope you get back on this one soon... Regards, Marc.
-
Well Dan here is a small dose of Terri's fixes ;)
Marc , doing well and on the mend :)
Today I sat in front of the bench which seems a life time ago and I think I forgot how to do this hobby . My hand painting skills need improving with a few touch ups . Can start the clear coating and I did find French rudder decals in the stash from an out Eduard build so I don't have to mask and spray this !
Thanks for all the support guys :) :) :)
Terri
-
:)
-
Looking great, Terri. Thanks for the fix and great to have you back! ;D
Dan

Nevermind the model, great to have you back!

Thanks Dan and Przemol :)
Terri

Coming along Nicely Terri! The tail skid looks awesome! Looking forward to the next update!
RAGIII
-
Good to see you back at this Terri - and looking at the pictures you are well on the way to producing another of your first class models.
Stephen.
-
Getting close to the fun part Terri, looking forward to how it will all go together!
Cheers,
Dave.
-
Thanks guys ! I started the clear coating and only have the under side to clear . Just might be able to start the decalling tomorrow . Test fitting seems promising but that might change once glue is added . I will have another up-date in a few days , thanks for following guys !
Terri
-
Decals are on ! The ones on the underside of the top wing will get re-done , just notice that they are to small ::)
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
Looking great! I wasn't aware that this one used British roundels...one never stops learning do they!
RAGIII
-
Alexis,
The silver along with the cockades really look great.
Kevin
-
Danke Rick and Kevin , very kind of you :)
Rick , when I first took an interest in this subject beginning to un cover info it appears that is much conflicting info and photo's seem to back up the national markings . The scale drawings and marking locations for the kit suggest British markings . So this is what I went with and what was available in the stash .
Weathering is completed other then the final stage with the wheels , once installed finishing off the mud and dirt . Main wash I stuck with what works best and for me and I love this stuff ...It's blond proof !!! With that said ..Flory's Grime wash . Oil staining is a mix of Tamiya smoke and future floor wax for the firewall / oil tank and engine . Underside oiling staining is Tamiya oil stain mixed with water and streaked on , blending with a q-tip . This can all get sealed and it's off to assembly and rigging .
Alexis

The engine rather turned out to be mess , I kept braking the smaller parts ...I'm stopping while the going is good ;)
Alexis

Nice wheatering, looking good. I can't wait to see it al come together.
-
Thank you Fvdm , very kind of you :)
Alexis
-
That weathering is looking great, A.
(That really sounds Canadian).
-
Awesome weathering !
RAGIII
-
That is some very impressive looking weathering Alexis. Shame about the engine, but will it really notice when the model is complete?
Stephen.
-
What a progress since my last visit here :o
May be in meantime the mounting process is running and we will see a nice triplane here soon!
Very inviting, this could become one of my models in 2021!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thank you gentlemen , very kind :)
Stephen , no shame really on the engine , was my own three left thumbs and hang nail which caused the multiple errors to occur . With all the detail on the back side , none of it will be visible and with it being at this stage in the game it doesn't matter and I'm very comfortable with it .
Frank , progress did continue but not yet a triplane ...but close !
Running the rigging lines begins with the middle wings fixed in place , inter struts are only glued to the lower wing . The middle will get locked in place when the top wing is in place . This will give me a little more wiggle room for lining things up . Under carriage is just in place for the photo op :)
Alexis
-
:)
-
Looking great T...Alexis ;D You are doing your usual remarkable job on a somewhat difficult subject!
RAGIII
-
Looking quite stunning Alexis! Yes, some great detailing and lovely choice of colours... That engine is really good... Regards, Marc.
-
Hello Rick and Marc , thank you :)
In all honesty Rick , really hasn't been difficult other then ensuring the middle wings are in the correct position , everything has been smooth sailing .
Re-insurance on the outcome of the engine Marc is appreciated :)
We have ourselves a Triplane and the rigging is also completed . Painting the turnbuckles will follow shortly after my eyes have a break .
Alexis

That is really coming together nicely - I'm very impressed with the subtle weathering touches on the underside. Very brave indeed to carry off a silver scheme - but it's working out beautifully.

All I can say is wow, very nice build.
i love the way it looks like the upper wing hit the hanger roof with poor parking.

Very cool Alexis! Beautiful silver finish and a very unusual looking Nieuport. Fascinating visual image, and you have carried it off very well.
Best regards,

Awesome progress ! Really looking outstanding!!
RAGIII
-
Yes, it's a triplane! And a beautiful one it is.

after my eyes have a break .
Alexis, not only your eyes need a break - that bird looks so unusual due to the special arrangement of the wings, that I need to look at a normal biplane for relaxing ;D
Well done!
Cheers,
Frank

It's a beauty, Alexis.
Such an odd design.

All very kind of you , thank -you gentlemen :)
I do like the unusual types and there is some very odd designs which makes them even cooler !
Alexis

Very, very beautiful, Alexis! It looks so funky - but I do like your silver and the really neat and clean modelling... ATB, Marc.

I am like Frank: I too needed to look carefully to see that you had not somehow made a mistake! I too like odd ball types but this one is truly very odd-ball! Super job on this Alexis - looking forward to seeing it finished.
Stephen.
-
Just caught up Alexis; you sure made that look easy, what a fascinating aircraft.Beautiful work!
Cheers,
Dave.

Danke Herren !
Okay , I had a reallly lazy day , tossed in a nap for good measure balancing the day out :) Only progress made included but not limited to the following . Turnbuckles are painted , bell cranks built , installed and painted .. Control horns for the tail components fixed in place and the carpet monster remains starving !
Alexis
-
Happy New Year Alexis,
I look forward to this build's next progress report. You've inspired me to dust off an Eduard Nieuport 21 from my stash as my next build.
Your cockpit has given me quite the standard to meet. That will be my stating point.
Kevin

Hello Kevin ,
You know a build log is now expected since you mentioned it and no ...not an archeology disection of the dust layers ;)
She is finished !
Alexis

Awesome build and display!

Thanks Rick :)

Excellent result, Alexis. I'll look for more pictures in the completed section.

That's a wonderful airplane on a nice display. You did a great job on this one.
