With the camel getting close to priming and painting I need a new 48 scale project and I have been wanting to build this kit for a while now . What got the gears going on this was Bertl post https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=11227.0 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=11227.0)
I was fortune enough to be able to get another one of this kits so I'm able to do both version . Single bay and double wing bay struts .
WILL not be going gun ho with the cockpit on this one . I had a junked Pfalz D.IIIa kit and will use the pit parts from that kit and scratch other items needed . The kit engine will be used , it's pretty good actual for it's age . More coming soon....
Terri
-
Terri,
You sure don't let the dust settle around your work bench. I'll enjoy seeing this build.
Kevin
-
Terri, you are doing very interesting kits I'm not aware of :o
Have fun with this build!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Kevin , over the past two years the dust hasn't settle on my bench . Last year we had nothing but rain the whole summer forcing me to stay indoors . This year was a repeat and with covid . It has created much bench time . Glad to have you tagging along ! :)
Frank , there are some very interesting subjects in resin which aren't in plastic and I like to do different subjects , it keeps it interesting ;)
Terri
-
With some time to spare I made a from start on cleaning up a few of the parts edges . Don't have to hollow out the cockpit either . Test fitting the lower wings to the fuselage will are promising with just a bit of light sanding to level the wing root .
Terri
-
Terri,
I hope you had an enjoyable holiday. Those parts look nice and clean making for a great start.
Kevin
-
Thanks Kevin , few more of the resin to clean up and then start figuring out the details .
Terri
-
Good time to check the alignment of the major parts.
-
Thanks Ken :)
I cleaned up rest of the resin parts , polished the cowl and the engine doesn't fit . I will not remove detail from the engine . From what comes in other kits which this engine type , this is the best one yet that I have see . Detail will be added to dress it up a bit more but it is a really good starting base . Now I have to figure out how to thin the with metal ????
Terri

:)

Love that kit! Can’t wait to see what you do with it. I had a blast doing mine.
What markings are you planning on doing?
Any one else know if or when Lone Star Models will be doing their kit?
Brian Riedel
-
Hi Brain ,
It has been a long time since the last time I spoke with you . Nice to see you here :)
Actually , this is the kit I got from you a many years back . ;) Not sure on what scheme I will go with . Haven't spent much time looking through refs and on line . But I would like one that is colourful .
Also not sure when Mike will be releasing his kit . In the spring he was looking for this kit so I'm guess it could be a copy of this one with improvements , but I'm not sure . Last I heard he was just waiting for the decals and the was a month ago . He has been announcing the release of the kit for a few years now so it could be a bit longer ...
Terri
-
Here is rest of the parts which are included in the kit .
I'm not a fan of white metal parts and the wheels will get replaced with better items from the parts bin . Landing gear struts will be tossed as well with new ones being made . Internal struts are supplied with 2 pieces of control strut , but it is over scale for this type and will replace from the parts bin . The cab struts I'm not sure if I will use these or not ...hell rest of the metal parts won't be used except for the prop . This is the only one which comes with the kit so if you want one with out the spinner ...one has to carve one up .
Other then the seat there are no other cockpit parts but there is a small fret of PE for some of the details .
Terri
-
I am catching up on some of the sub forum threads today. I had one of these Years ago. I decided it was Out of My League at the time :-[ I am looking forward to your build as always Terri!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ,
Will be back at the tomorrow night , I need to start figuring out the cockpit details so i will focus on that for now .
Terri
-
I'm not a fan of white metal parts
#MeToo! The quality of the struts on the lower right corner of the picture could also be better ???
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hi Frank ,
Most of yesterday I spent working out a few the items which will be replaced and I found a solution to the center struts . I the parts bin I was able to dig up two matching resin struts from a left over project . These can sanded to shape and shorten where needed to construct new ones :)
Was also able to find a seat in the parts bin , another resin left over item , just need to thin it a bit for a more in scale appearance . Prop blades got polished out as well .

Hello Terri,
It’s good to see a start on this project. Make sure to take a photo
of this bird next to your Pfalz Dr.1 so we can see a family portrait.
Kevin
-
Hi Terri!
Beautiful little project, a rare bird in our field.
About cowling, Karaya produced a resin version of your engine: http://www.karaya.pl/en/karaya/11/siemens-halske-sh-iii-engine-kare4807.html?ref=%2Fen%2Fkaraya%2F11%2F2%2F1%2Fitems.html
But, of course, you don't know if it fits well in your cowling if you don't have in your hands.
Did you try if metal cowling fits well to fuselage?
You may try to obtain a copy made with transparent acetate, using metal cowling as master.
If you have a piece of transparent acetate, put it on a candle. When you see "wave moving" in it, press it with a fast move on metal cowling, fixed on a stick before.
The transparent acetate will adhere to master. After few seconds, you may remove the printed transparent cowling, clean the part cutting away acetate excesses.
Hope my explanation is clear!
Hope useful too!
Roberto
-
Hi Roberto ,
I have built Karaya's engine before on Eduards SSW D.III first production 1995 . , it's a nice little kit packed with detail . But I'm going with the kit engine on this one .
Yes , your explanation is clear . I already thought about smash modeling one , but the cowl fits prefect . No gaps and is flush with the fuselage . I went and pick a bit for my dremel so I will be able to thin the inside of the cowl and reduce some of the weight . Man it's a heavy little piece of metal .
Terri
-
Hi Terri,
happy that you find the way!
Roberto
-
Well, here you go again, looking forward to more...
Ed
-
Thanks Ed :)
Okay plan of a attack is under way . First step for the fuselage detail is we need some formers to start with . I opt to not go with the kit scale drawings , but rather the ones in Jack Herris book Pfalz Aircraft of WW 1 . They are closer to the kit parts .
The inside of the fuselage is no round like it should be , it has flat sides , Not much surface can be removed to correct this . The halves aren't overly thick to refine this . So adjustments had to be made with the formers . For these parts I laid Tamiya masking tape over the scale drawings and traced it out with a pen . Tape was then transfer onto card stock 0.20mm . With a new blade I made a few passes a long the lines . This can now be snapped to remove the excess .
Now came the fun part , a few hours of sanding and test fitting so that the formers match the inner surfaces while leaving no gap at the fuselage seem . I did do a little sanding on the fuselage halves sides so I could keep both sides pretty much the same . This where I'm at with them so far .
Terri

A couple of pics I found on the internet that might help with the interior that I didn’t have when I built mine.
Brian Riedel
-
Thanks for sharing Brian ,
I do have the second photo you posted . But I haven't seen the first one before .
Terri
-
Was able to cut out some other parts for the frame and the floor . With the Camel almost button up my attention will turn more to this project with better progress being made .
Terri
-
Great start on sorting out the parts and the bulkheads Terri! I am as always looking forward to more!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ,
I spent a few hours working on the bulkheads The front one with the instrument location was a bit of a challage getting the cout right . It's not prefect but it will do and will look the part once it is in place . I have one more item for the frame work to cut out and shape and that is the front seat support .
Terri
-
Looking good! Have you figured out what markings you want to do? I always kick myself for not doing my favorite, Paul Bauer.
Brian Riedel
-
Hi Brain , thanks :)
Yes I have made a choice on the markings . Will be doing Paul Bauer's kite it is the most colourful out of the schemes . Well , you will have to do another one ;)
Progress is going a bit quicker once I figured out which way I was going to assemble the pit . The bulk heads are in place and I had to cut another floor . My first one the measurements were off . Fuselage halves mate up , every thing fits so far ! :)
Terri

:)
-
Well done, Terri, lookin' great!
Kevin
-
Thanks Kevin :)
Terri
-
Made a bit of progress today on more of the frame work . Left side is done with the right side just needing the stringers and that is it for the framing . :)
Terri
-
:)
-
The interior bulkheads look good, Terri. This work will enhance the kit nicely.
-
It certainly will, lovely neat work Terri.
Cheers,
Dave.
-
Thanks guys :) 8)
Terri
-
So it turned out to be a lazy day with a few naps ;) But I did get the right side finished up with the stringers and tested fitted the halves again and I must say that I'm rather pleased with how this turned out so far and I don't have to worry about the structure collasping on me for painting and details .

Got the seat support installed and the ammo bin which was made out of scraps of card . Not the greatest but most of it will not be seen and it fits ! Some of the smaller items are painted and pretty much ready to go . The seat belts are recycled from a trashed Pfalz D.IIIa build . I still have have the control column to make which I will work on next . Wood parts have their base coat on and set for the grain effect and clear coating . Couple small details need to be work out ,but I'm actually enjoying this so far :) Few more days I should have the cockpit finished up .
Terri

Looks like another day of well spent bench time, Terri.
Keep the updates coming, they’re very enjoyable.
Kevin

Excellent results, Terri!
-
Thanks Kevin and Ermeio :)
Terri

and so it begins! Looking Great to Date Terri!
RAGIII
-
Awesome! I am doubly interested in this build as I have just won an eBay auction of the kit yesterday! It is the second boxing ( green plane) and it comes with decals for Paul Baumer! Now I can do Baumer’s plane!
If only Wingnuts could have done one in 1/32.
Keep up the great work!
Brian Riedel
-
Thanks Rick and Brian :)
Cool , good for you Brian , hope that you got it for a fair price for being a very , very hard kit to find . I would love to see this in 32 scale even a new tooled 48 scale would be a warm welcome .
Terri
-
Bit more progress on this little bugger . Start making up the control column and still have a few more details to add and while doing a bit of clean up I found a PE seat back which works better then the resin one from the parts bins . Just have to cut a new base for it . Little bigger then what I'm using now , but smaller then an Albatros seat . So this made my day ! I can almost start laying done some colours once the column is finished .
Terri
-
:)
-
The seat should coe out Fantastic Terri. Also the control column is looking great!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick :) Almost have the column done ;)
Terri
-
I started off finishing the control column . A few cables for the guns will get added once it is fixed in place for good . Since I had the airbrush out I made a start on the paint as well . Ammo bin and the power planet got bathed in black and while I was at it . The seat and side panels have the first step for wood effects . Still need to make a cushion ::)
For the inside of the fuselage I made my own mix for the pale blue grey . For this I used Tamiya J.N. Grey with Tamiya light blue . Not sure on the ratios though , just kept adding the blue until I was happy .

Yet another excellent interior on the way T !
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick , few more cockpit details to paint and she can start being put together finally :)
Terri
-
Made a start on getting the details in place today and prep the rest . The control and rudder bar are next so have the room to be able to run the control lines with out having to much in the way . Cushion is made up with it's base coat and awaits weathering . The Instrument for the main panel comes from ones I got from Des . I'm slowly getting there !
Terri
-
:)
-
Terri,
That's another great looking cockpit. The way it looks you'd think you've found the 1/32nd scale version of this aircraft.
Kevin
-
That is a Great Looking Pit Terri! As always your details are amazing!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Kevin and Rick for stopping and dropping kind comments :)
I finished up the detail painting and have the rudder bar as well as the control column rigged up . Once the paint has dried this will be installed . I'm shooting to have the pit done today and ready to button up .
Terri
-
This part is just about finished now . All the details are added minus the ammo bin and seat . I need to clear coat for a pin wash so it flows better . Only one item is glued to the right side .
Next up-date I will have this button up and seams filled .
Terri

Freakin’ awesome!
Brian Riedel

Terri, if you shrink Mikael Carlson and put him into your cockpit he will not see a difference to his big aircraft ;D
Wonderful!
Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Brain and Frank :)
The pit is finished and ready to be closed up . I kept the weathering light using a pin wash of Tamiya smoke thinned with future and everything got a sealing coat using Vallejo satin varnish .
Terri

:)
-
:)
-
Spent time on this one today as well and got the halves together and the seems filled and sanded ! The fuselage is short by 3mm . To make up the difference ( I didn't want to cut the fuselage ) I added some strips on plastic on the tail and sanded that to shape . Half round stock was glued on to the rudder and sanded flush . Hinge detail will make up the rest of the gap . Also had to do sanding on the fuselage halves to get them to match . Engine has it's base coat and it actual sucks ! mismatch moulded :( A bitch to clean up and it still sucks :o
Terri

:)
-
Didn't spent much time on this one today other then test fitting the engine to ensure I will have the clearance needed . The engine does fit and spins inside the cowl so I should be good to go with the detailing . I did paint the cylinders dark alum as well . I also have the tail planes ready and those didn't match the scale planes which come with the kit , nor did the match in Jack Harries book so I ended up doing a bit of sanding to get them to match the fuselage sides . They pretty much work so I will go with them ( out of the card stock needed to make new ones ) . No pictures on these yet yet .
But here is a look of what the engine looks inside so far .
Terri
-
Don't you just love these resin kits? :P
-
Great work here too!
Since I never built a resin kit: what glue have you used for big things like fuselage halves? Epoxy or CA?
Cheers,
Frank
-
Frank , I use super glue . A medium and a thin . The med super glue gives me a bit more working time but not by much . Thin I use for details in the pit and PE parts . Every thing else I use the med glue .
Hi Ken , I do like a good resin kit that challenges the skills and then there are some which I wonder why I even started . This isn't one of those . So far It has been flowing nicely and I work on the right side wing root . This side of the fuselage sits lower then the right side so some very creative sanding which I hope will work in the end . The right side has overly large mounting holes giving the pins in the wing room to move around as I messed with reducing the thickness . These holes will get filled with putty and once it has tack up a bit the wing will be pressed into place leaving the pin makes .
Tail planes and now mounted . but not glued in place yet . Just making sure that this lines up and won't be off kilter . So far so good . The elevators will be cut free and poshed down . Stabilizers need to be flared in . Now it's strut locations for the wings .
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
-
Terri,
I'm still following along with this build and your progress looks great. Did you decided on which colour scheme you are planning on?
Kevin
-
This one certainly is looking good.
There's that Beechcraft tail !
-
Thanks Kevin and Ken :)
Kevin , yes I have chosen a scheme for this one . Will do Paul Baumer's kite for this one ;)
Today I spent the time on starting the detailing on the engine to dress it up a bit and add some life to it . I cut 22 push rods and cut the push rod seats out of 5mm brass tubing . The push rods are 3mm and slide right in . Induction pipes are robbed from the parts bin and the spark plugs I still have to trim to size once the glue has fully set .
Terri
-
I am just catching up on this one Terri. WOW! I think that is one of your best interiors of Many great builds! The Model looks great closed up and your engine should look Spiffy with all of those Push Rods ;D
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ! :)
It came down to ...I can't put this off anymore . Marking the holes in the wings for the strut locations . These aren't mark on the kit parts so rather then spend hours measuring it all out here is another way to mark them . For this I used the scale drawings in Jack Harris book . I lay down Tamiya tape over the plans . Center was marked matching the kit part . I used a black pen marking the strut locations . Pulled the tape off the plans and laid it down on the underside of the top wing lining up the center marks . Lower wings was done in the same manner but I used the wing root edge and the outer edge tip drawing that on the the and marking the strut locations . I used a awl pressing it down on the black dot's . The ink will transfer in to the dents made leaving marks to drill for the struts .
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
-
Happy Monday, Terri,
Things should move along well now that you've established the strut locations.
It's all looking great.
Kevin
-
Hey Kevin , thanks for dropping by with continuing support :)
Terri
-
Did a little bit more on this one and have the hinge detail added and pins . This was done in a simple manner . The wings are very thick and I'm not spending the time sanding them down , nor do I feel like making new ones . Tail planes are flared in as well and more work on the cowl . The top of the fuselage in not shaped right and will take a fair bit of putty to fix this so I made adjustments to the cowl . Still a bit of clean up to do on the underside but I can live with how this turned out . The fuselage is miss matched and is a challenge on getting things lined up and looking some what ..not have ass bad !
Terri
-
:)
-
:)
-
Wow, that cowling looks like real metal.
You're coming along well on this one.
-
Ken, I could have bet you made a cowling for Terri on your lathe!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hi guys ,
Ken , that's because it is metal ;) . I did some polishing to get out the fine scratches from sanding . This will be painted white in the end , but I do like how nice and shine it is .
Frank , do you think he would do one for the nieuport ;)
Terri
-
Outstanding work on the strut locations and tail construction Terri! That cowling looks amazing...too bad it needs to be painted!
RAGIII
-
Frank , do you think he would do one for the nieuport ;)
Surely, if you ask him nicely.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hey guys, I'm standing right here. ;D
I have contacted T about this topic. I think the Noop needs one.
-
Thanks Rick , not much more body work to do and I can get the PE parts fixed in place . Will be starting the struts soon as well . More to come in the next weeks ;)
Thanks Ken ;)
Terri
-
Setting a side the other bits for the time being I focused on adding the smaller details before I get my nails down . ( I'm pampering myself ) Smaller detail can be hard to work with . I added the induction pipes using those items form junked Dragon Fokker Dr.1 builds . Lead wires are added as well with the pushrods still remaining and additional detail painting .
Terri
-
Frohe Weihnachten! Terri,
Little by little this will come together as another of your unique builds.
Kevin
-
Danke Kevin ,
Frohe Weilnachten und Gott schutze dich !
Terri
-
Push rods are now in place . Went crossed eyed a few times but the detailing is done and not to shabby considering on what I had to work with and it still fits inside the cowl so I will tag this one as positive ! Have a bit of detailing painting left . But for now Will focus on finishing off the fuselage details including the cowl and making the struts .
Terri
-
A wash on the crankcase will really make that pop.
-
Hello Ken ,
A wash did add life with the rest of the detailing painting completed . All this was sealed with semi clear .
Alexis
-
8)
-
Thanks Ken :)
Bit more progress moving forward with the Struts completed , start on the axle flairing and the legs cut . The engine frame work should poke through slots in the cowl . I don't have the right tool to cut these in and the cowl will still need hours of thinning it down which I'm not doing . So to represent this detail I heat stretched some half round rod to the size needed .
Alexis

What a nice looking engine and cowling, there, Alexis! Great progress and looking good! Regards, Marc.
-
Thanks Marc :)
Alexis

I thought I had commented earlier but obviously I was wrong. The struts and spreader are looking great. Engine and cowling are Fantastic!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ,
But I'm having troubles getting the plastic to bond to the white metal , but I will get it figured out . Will have another up-date shortly .
Alexis
-
It took me forever to get the ribs to bond with the cowling when I built it. Just chalked it up to my eternal struggle with super glue.
Brian Riedel
-
Hello Brian ,
Your cowl turned out really nice with the added ribs . I feel this is a detail which could have been molded in but one can't be picky I guess . Thanks for sharing your build again .
Made a bit of progress on the undercarriage legs which I still need include the mounting pins . Next step in getting it put together .
Alexis
-
The gear looks like it will be awesome Alexis!
RAGIII
-
I hope so Rick ;)
Alexis
-
Past few days go by ending in the landing gear legs and axle being put together . Leaving just the PE parts for the fuselage being left then it's off to painting and decaling !
Alexis
-
Looks great A👍
RAGIII
-
You made a nice progress on this one!
The undercarriage and the cowlings looks great.
I would like to add this bird to my stash, if I can find one.
Cheers,
Frank

Danke Rick und Frank :)
Frank , I do hope you are able to find to add to the stash .
Alexis

That undercarriage looks really good Alexis... some useful mounting pins there... good progress! Marc.

Howdy,
Lone star models still has their future kit listed.

Brian Riedel
-
Thanks Marc :)
PE parts are in place and ready for primer . I did have to move the location holes on the front of the fuselage struts . The placement points on the kit parts are not correct , but this is do to the shape of the nose which isn't correct . Totally forgot about the cab struts and these will get re-pinned to match the locations in the top wing . Either way , I'm ready for priming and painting :)
Alexis
-
:)
-
:)
Note all the air bubbles which needed filling , this was done with really thick super glue , sanded and polished to shape .
Alexis
-
Airbrush got one good work out today , parts primed with the fuselage and wheels getting a coat of silver grey . Wings I sprayed a gloss white in prep for the lozenge decals . Struts are paint with the same mix I used for the pit . Cowl is sprayed white ( many , many coats ) and the prop is under way as well .
Alexis

-
Alexis,
It’s great to see this build come together. How can keep up this pace? The quality of your
build isn’t suffering from it, either. Thanks for sharing.
Kevin
-
The primer coat looks great Alexis. Your filling and sanding was obviously done well. I Love the prop. What technique are you using to paint the lamination layers?
RAGIII
-
Morning Kevin and Rick ,
I think what it is Kevin is I get jack up on java through out the day with an outcome of me vibrating around the house ! ;)
Sanding and filling didn't go as planned Rick , on the underside there is a ghost effect which I can't couldn't get off . And I'm chalking that up to there being to much formaldahyde (sp) in the resin . Some weathering will conceal it a bit when I get to that stage .
Yes , the prop is a base coat of Tamiya wooden deck tan which was sprayed weeks ago and clear coated so this is fully dry and cured . Masked off the lams and then sprayed Tamiya flat brown . Once this is dried it will get a dull coat and then the work with pencil crayons begins . I have one blade which the lam's didn't turn out over well do too my messed up masking practices . This I can fix with the pencils .
Alexis
-
Weathering is our friend.
Nice work, Alexis.
-
Which primer do you use on resin?
On plastic parts I like Alclad (it etches a bit into the plastic surface so very robust) but on resin it could hold better.
There is some special resin primer by Gunze (dark red label) but I can't find it in the shops in europe.
BTW: for white metal parts I found a primer in a DIY store. I needs a while to get really hard, but then I was not able to remove it.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Danke Ken :)
Frank , no special prime for the resin or plastic . I used Tamiya XF paint thinned with lacquer thinner ( their brand ) . The lacquer thinner will give " bite " to the surface . before I paint white metal parts I but on a coat of future first and then I start priming away . This will give tooth bonding the paint to the surface .
Alexis
-
Haven't forgotten about this one , need the paint to dry and some clear coating which brings me to the next step . Spraying the white on the tail , black is next .
Prop lam's are done and clear coated for decals later on . The spinner will be sprayed white . I was going with black but found that it really won't look right . Besides there is not to be a spinner . I just at carving !
Templates for the top lozenge are ruff cut out and will be trimmed more before applying .
Alexis

:)
-
:)
-
Alexis,
That's a nice bit of progress. It shouldn't be too long before this bird gets it's wings.
Kevin
-
Should look awesome Alexis!
RAGIII
-
Danke Kevin ,
One would think it won't take long , but still a ways to go ....there is a lot of rib tapes to apply ! Only have two colours left to add . The black on the tail , cowl , guns and the grey for the tires . Getting there though and at this stage it does start to feel good once it all finally comes together .
Alexis
-
Nice work, Alexis. 8) Can't wait to see more progress on this.
-
Thanks Ken :)
Alexis
-
Haven't been active , but haven't been inactive either .
Starting with the fuselage decals the first chevron for the personal marking broke apart in the water into a million tiny little parts . ::)
Look quit cute seeing them floating in the water cascading around effortlessly . Thank Gott for a second kit . Even though there is a few troubles with the chevron ( it only broke in three parts ! ) I got the bugger on !!! :) The cross provided on the decal sheet are the wrong size for Paul's aircraft , these ended up coming for the spare box . Going to need a few brush strokes for touch ups once the decals are fully dried . Prop doesn't have the right prop logo's , fun that the kit comes with only a wotan prop , but no logo's It does have logo's of a Axil prop , but no prop !
Alexis
-
:)
-
Nice recovery on the decal for the stripes Alexis. I probably would have given up or painted this marking ::) Again, that prop is amazing!
RAGIII
-
That's very sweet of you Rick , thank you :)
Alexis
-
Keep up the great work, Alexis. It would take me half a year to get as
far as you have with this kit.
Kevin
-
Already it feels like it has been 6 months since I started this project Kevin . It has only been 4 months ::) My goal is to have this completed by the end of next month if all goes as planned .
Alexis
-
Howdy,
If it’s not too late, LF has decals for a variety of propeller logos. I believe the Wotan props are on the Austrian Hungarian sheet.
Brian Riedel
-
Starts to look like the Pfalz of Mikael Carlsson! May be he has some spare decals? Äh stop, wrong scale! Mikael has one in 1:1 ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
Frank
-
Bit aggravating when decals are uncooperative like that;the wings look terrific though,is that Aviattic lozenge Alexis? By the way,the Voisin seems to have finally found it's way onto an aircraft, not sure if its in the air yet but at least a bit of progress.
Cheers,
Dave.
-
Brian , have made a note for future projects , it is a little late . It's all been sealed now ;)
Du bist ein lustiger Mann Frank ;) :) Danke Schon
Dave , They can indeed be a bit aggravating at times . Yes I'm using Aviattic Lozenge decals . # ATT48008 5 Colour " joined faded . Lower wings will get the same treatment . Yeah , it's taking a world tour , with less and less flights the system slows down .
Not a good day for sitting in front of the bench . Started off wonderfully , feeling a little sassy I sprayed the tyres . All was going well until a mishap took place . I don't understand that weird connection you guy's have with power tools ... while thinning the inside of the cowl more the dermal tool got away and did this ::) Yeah , I'm sticking with my hair drier and curling iron .
So the cowl will have to be re-done ::)
Alexis ( still feeling bit sassy )
-
sorry to see that damage there to the cowl!
I would be totally on the "non dremel" side for doing almost anything aside from the most rough and general shaping or cutting of rough shapes/parts - I've never had luck doing any fine work with it....
-
OUCH!
RAGIII
-
One must be 'one with the tool' ;D
Hope you can fix that. If nothing went wrong on my builds, they would take half the time.
-
Yous votes of confindence are most welcomed , thanks guys !
It's just a matter of sanding the are between the engine frame and respraying . An easy fix once I had a better look at damage it was just the paint , no gouges in the metal itself . Luck was on my side at that time . Should have this done buy the end of the day . Colder weather is coming so will be home more .
Patrick , most times I do well with the dremel tool , I should have used a better bit for the job .
Alexis
-
Progress hasn't been very productive over the past few days , but I did manage to spend time on the project .
Undercarriage is ready for weathering now , took me some time masking the wheels this time around . Just couldn't stay focused on the task at hand .
Cowl is repaired with the engine framing painted black and tackled the lozenge on the wings . Top and bottom are ready for rib tapes . The lozenge decals are transparent but I stayed away from shading in the ribs . In this scale with the amount of ribs this would have not looked natural giving it an over done appearance . I will be doing the tapes in blue for the top and bottom , transparent lozenge won't work and will make it look very weird .

Alexis,
Looks like another productive couple days at the bench.
Stay warm, Kevin

Lovely lozenge Alexis ;D
Guy

Nice work on applying the Lozenge Alexis!
RAGIII

I'm trying to stay warm Kevin , hope your weather is fairing better then ours ;)
Guy and Rick , my deepest thank you 8)
Alexis

Lovely progress on this very interesting plane, Alexis! The lozenge is coming along beautifully, the undercarriage is neat, and the prop is just Wow! Well, done, Marc
-
Hello Marc ,
Thank you ever so much for your positive feedback on the progress I have made towards this build :)
Alexis
-
Very nice progress, Alexis!
The lozenge decals are transparent but I stayed away from shading in the ribs . In this scale with the amount of ribs this would have not looked natural giving it an over done appearance.
With that amount of ribs your decision is clear, but it seems to be a bug of the kit! The lower wing has nine ribs, as normal. See at 1:07 in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfPvy_4M3Hg
There is a reason, where this comes from. There are additional bracing elements between the ribs, which are visible as small lines in the plans (the normal ribs are double lines). There exists a picture against light, where those looks like the ribs, but they are smaller and the cloth is only nailed to the normal ribs.
So the kit creators have interpreted it wrongly :(
Cheers,
Frank
-
Guten Tag Frank !
You are very correct on the ribs spacing , they are wrong in the kit . actually the whole wings are just wrong and waaaaay overly thick . I should have made new wings and tossed this in the trash , but then this creates corrections at the lower wing root leading into major work on the fuselage which isn't accurate either . But it is what it is and I do have another where more of these issue will get corrected on that build .
Thanks Frank for sharing your knowledge , it keeps us on our toes ;)
Alexis
-
Ok Alexis, then I cancelled this kit from my search list. Thanks for the Info!
If the wings and the fuselage need a heavy rework, undercarriage and struts I could do in brass (I trained that recently) and the engine can be used from Eduard then is no big value remaining of this old high priced kit. This is may be the a candidate for a scratch build, one day in far future!
Thanks and cheers,
Frank
-
Frank ,
By all means don't let me discourage you on getting the kit . Over all it's not a bad kit . Sure it has faults but taking into account it's age . It is a kit which can be built with skill and you have the skills for this .
Quick fixes would be sand off the rib detail thinning the wings at the same time for a better profile . Just top of the wing root can be sand back as well the match the wing . Rib detail can be replaced ;)
Alexis
-
Other then today , haven't had much time for hobbies . Engine is mounted along with the cowl and retaining strap and this stage is now ready for a wash . Still working on the wings . Had issues with the decals conforming on the wing tip leading edge . That has been address and is now drying . Thank Gott for Tamiya decal glue ! Once this is dried it'' rib tapes ...many many tapes .
I have more touch up on the cowl , left hand side took some damage while installing it ::)
Alexis
-
:)
-
Hello Alexis,
It's great to see the prop in place. The bird is looking good. I hadn't heard of Tamiya Decal Glue, must track it down.
Kevin
-
I like how that's coming together. 8)
-
Thanks Kevin and Ken you guys are very kind :)
Kevin , a few years back I saw it at the Hobby Shop . Never heard of it or did I ever see it on line in forums . It is an awesome product for decals that won't behave well . Apply it to the surface first then decal and smooth out the decal . It will melt the decal better then sol or other products . My tips turn out perfect with minor touch up . I will be trying to tackle this today once the hangover has subdued ::)
Alexis
-
The Cowling and prop look great in place Alexis. I need to find some of that Tamiya product as it sounds interesting 8)
RAGIII
-
Look terrific Alexis; and another product I've never heard of to try out, very interesting.I don't envy you the next stage, probably the only part of lozenge I really despise, and why I buy cookie cutter decals with integral tapes where available.
Cheers,
Dave.
-
Thanks Rick and Dave , should be able to start with the taping this weekend ;)
Alexis
-
I don't know how I've been missing the thread. You did a lot of great, hard work on this and going to produce a beautiful reproduction of the plane. Hats off.
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Thank you kindly Giuseppe ,
Rib taping is under way on the lower surface . Surprised that I found pink rib tapes to the decal stash . Once the lower surfaces are completed , will have another up-date .
Funny , when I was working It seems I had more time in front of the bench . I'm not working , but find I'm spending less time ::)
Alexis
-
Had some time today and almost got the under side done . Just a few more to go then it's the top surface :)
Alexis
-
Looking good, Alexis!
Kevin
-
Thanks Kevin :)
Alexis
-
And the top side begins .....lot's of tapes to cut here ::)
Alexis
-
Well done, Alexis.
Is this blue linen on clear or white decal paper? If it is on clear you should try before cutting a lot of stripes how it looks like. Two layers on top of each other do not look nice sometimes.
You are so well trained now, do want to do the lozenge and rib tapes on my Halberstadt? But sorry, that bird is so strange, they put the lower brighter lozenge to the upper side so I guess I need to do it myself. ;D
Cheers,
Frank
-
The blue decal is German faded blue linen and is on white backing , so no need to double up on the tapes . ;)
Well trained you say ! No I don't want to do the lozenge and taping on your build , you need the practice after all ;)
Thanks my friend :)
Alexis
-
This is coming together really well - love it.
Sigh - badly want this a/c in 1/32
-
Lozenge and tapes are looking great Alexis!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Patrick and Rick :)
Patrick , you are not alone . I as well would like to see this in 32 scale :)
If my day tomorrow goes well and I know it will :)
Not much of the tapes to go . Right side of the lower wing and rest of the top is all that is left . . :)
Alexis
-
Alexis,
Just keep plugging away at those rib tapes. They’re more fun than a week long
TDY at CFB Cold Lake. Believe me, I know.
😉 Kevin
-
Plug away I will Kevin ;)
Alexis
-
All taping is wrapped up now and last of the national markings too boot !
All parts are ready to go for a sealing coat and then it's off making wire hoops and turnbuckles . Then it will be time to get her together and of the bench :)
Alexis
-
:)
It has taken a long time to get this point , but feels great !
-
Oh, that really looks great. You only need a fitting Paul Bäumer figure.
My deepest respect!
Andreas

Thanks Andreas :-*
Alexis

It also looks Great Alexis! You are finally getting close now 8)
RAGIII
-
Looks lovely Alexis,
The lozenge is great!
Guy
-
Thanks Rick and Guy , but the lozenge does have it's errors here and there ...but Mum's the word on that ;)
Alexis
-
Somehow I have missed this Alexis! You seem to have several different builds ongoing on different parts of this forum and I cannot keep up with you...
The lozenge and rib tapes look first class - you have more patience than me to put all of those on - and the overall model is coming on really well . I am not a fan of resin kits, but it is good to see them when they are as well made as this one.
Stephen.
-
Guten Morgen Stephen !
I don't have that many going on only the two at the moment and so far I haven't mixed up the parts ! But , give me time ;)
This actually took me quit a few days to do , not something that I have a ton of joy doing ...thank god for rocking music because it sure helps with this stage .
Thanks Stephen :)
Alexis
-
Absolutely gorgeous work on every aspect of this model, Alexis! Consistent with your body of work. True artistry!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thank you so much my friend :)
Alexis
-
That is looking very, very good Alexis! Some neat modelling and a great colour scheme! As others have said, some really stunning detail on a resin kit! Regards, Marc.
-
Slowly, what belongs together grows together!
A lot of nice subassemblies :)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Marc and Frank :)
I had some troubles with drill the rigging holes for the eyelets and ended up doing some damage to the lozenge . That has been touch up . Lower wings are now fixed in place with the guns and ammo feed chutes . Next is the under side of the top wing for it's eyelets . ;) And the guns still need some weathering ::)
Alexis
-
Alexis,
That's one colorful bird. She's looking better very update.
Kevin
-
Gorgeous Pfalz Alexis!
RAGIII

Thanks Kevin , always a pleasure having you drop :)
Yes , the colours are starting to pull it altogether now and I can't wait to see her next to the my Pfalz Dr.1 :)
Alexis

Gorgeous Pfalz Alexis!
RAGIII
Thanks Rick :)
Gorgeous things for Gorgeous people ;)
Alexis

Awesome! Can’t wait to see it on it’s legs!
Brian Riedel
-
Thanks Brain :) She will be on her legs soon :)
Alexis
-
Today time was spent on weathering the guns , finishing placing the eyelets and I'm now at the stage where I can mount the top wing . and get on with the rigging . Beer is in the cooler for those spiders when they are finished ;)
Alexis
-
Alexis,
It looks like you had a very productive day. I spent mine shoveling snow.
Your work looks much better than mine.
Kevin
-
More terrific looking progress Alexis!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Kevin and Rick ,
Today's goal , if I make to the hobby room . Is to get the top wing mounted and start making turnbuckles . For such a small aircraft it sure has a lot of rigging !
Alexis , who should be shoveling the walk way :o
-
Don’t worry about the walk way.. it’ll melt in the spring :D
Looks great.
Guy
-
It will melt by next weekend , calling the weathering to be on plus side !
Thanks Guy for following long :)
Top wing is now mounted ! Boy is the fuselage fuck't on this kit . Trying to line up the top wing took two attempts on getting it center . The cockpit opening is not squared with the fuselage , right side on the fuselage is slightly fatter then the right side . I did remove some but I didn't want to spend the rest of life sanding away . The wing does sit level and is plum with the lower wing . Wing struts still need to be glued in place the out ones need their pins trimmed a bit more . Not sure how this happened but the wings are starting to warp , easy fix though . At least my strut measurements are right ! I was worried about that .
Alexis
-
Land gear isn't glued in place yet . Only for photo op ....it's for Brian ! :) ;)
Alexis
-
WOOOO HOOO!!!
Brian Riedel
-
Looks good with the wing in place. As for the alignment to the fuselage just don't take a photo looing down on the cockpit ::) Seriously, great work as always Alexis
RAGIII
-
What a lovely bird Alexis!
Guy
-
Looks like it's coming together, Alexis.
That one has some very long legs.
-
Thanks Guys ! :) Rigging should start some time today after I had my morning coffee ;)
Ken , yes it has nice long legs ! Just like me ;)
Alexis
-
An observation, if I might. Don’t forget the dark grey between the cowling and the lower wing leading edge.
Brian Riedel
-
Hi Brian , thanks for the reminder on this ...I still have the black band on the cowl to do as well ...ooooopps ! ::)
I got carried away with mounting the top wing , will have this taken care of before I start the rigging .
Thanks for cover my back Brian :)
Alexis , who has some more painting to do ...
-
I keep missing this one Alexis as I am not used to dropping into this part of the forum. It seems that you are not the only one to be having problems with your current build, but you are at least continuing and I am sure that the end result will be worth it. Mind you I understand your frustration when you have done so much to get things looking right and then the kit lets you down. It will be worthwhile though because this is such an unusual type - that always gets my vote.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Stephen ,
Over all the build is going well if I could just remember to do some things first ::) This is a kit which will test your skills working with resin kits . Not the worst one I have built and won't be my last one ;)
Alexis
-
Okay , I believe things should be back on track . The Black on the cowl was masked and hand painted using Vallejo Model Color semi flat black . The grey on the lower part of the fuselage by the cowl I painted Tamiya Neutral grey by hand as well which didn't turn out the greatest , but it will do .
Alexis
-
Great Progress ! Keep it up !!!
Ed
-
Nice job Alexis ;)
Guy
-
Thanks Ed and Guy :)
I did spend about an hour on this yesterday and was able to get the warp out of the lower wing tips . Rigging can finally start now , should have the rigging done in a few days .
Alexis
-
Great Progress ! Keep it up !!!
Ed
I have to agree with My Amigo!
RAGIII

I will try Rick ,
It did get pulled out of the trash , I thank you for that ;)

That's what Friends are for Alexis! Take your time and get yourself together! You will know when you are ready!

Right now all I want to do is give you a big HUG !
Thank -you so much my friend :-*
Alexis

Glad to have you back Alexis!
Guy

Thanks Guy , I'm taking a break from building for now . Sooner or later this might get finished .
Alexis
-
Wasn't able to look into this board for some days ....
It did get pulled out of the trash
Ooops :o
What happened here?
I'm taking a break from building for now .
Ok, understandable! Take a deep breath of fresh air .... and come back one day with recharged batteries :-*
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hi Frank ,
Yes , I had a co-vid melt down and real need a break form stuff that is stressing me out . Still active , just not building for a bit .
Rick , Dave W and Guy have been a termedous aid in calming me down so I was able to think clear and regain my composure :)
Alexis
-
That happens, Alexis. No fault of yours. As you say, you can always come back to it again. Regards.
-
:)
-
I did restart this last week but I sure didn't get far and ended taken a few more steps back . Cab struts are rigged after trying 3 times to get it and in the process drop it on the bench knocking lose the cab struts and two inter struts on the left side . Then again I also forgot to glue the two inter struts in place ::) ::) ::) so.....I have re-gluing to do before I continue .
Alexis
-
Alexis,
This kit must be full of traps and potential snags for the builder. I'm sure you will navigate through them.
Kevin
-
Hi Kevin ,
Yes there are a lot of snags for the builder and one area I should have spent more time on was the fuselage shaping on the right side and I did jump the gun and should have done per-rigging on the top wing before mounting it which I sure cause some of my frustration . I have built worse resin kits then this ...but it ...it fights back hard . Not for the beginner that's for sure . I will get her rigged slowly and when that feat has been reached the rest should go pretty quick .
Alexis
-
This one has fought you all of the way Alexis, but you seem to be Taming the Beast! Keep up the good fight!
RAGIII
-
You have taken on and won over worse kits than this Alexis, so with a little more time and patience I can see this one being finished too.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Rick , this beast will be tamed and will learn it's place in herstory ! ;)
That I have Stephen , I just started reading the Art of War again ....this one will not win !
Alexis
-
Okay , this one's back on the bench with repairs made to the eyelets I messed up . Had to redrill a few holes and started the pre-rigging before I mount the top wing .
Alexis
-
Alexis,
It's good to see you tackle this bird again. I'm looking forward to you reaching the finish line.
I'm still around, now and again,
Kevin
-
Awesome to see this one back on the bench!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Kevin and Rick ,
Feels good to bring this one back out and with rain coming today it will be a good day for it .
Alexis
-
Welcome back! Glad to see you working on this beauty again.
Brian Riedel
-
Good to see that you are determined to show it who is boss! Best of luck with finishing this one Alexis.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Brain and Stephen ,
I did manage to get the pre-rigging for the inter struts and the top wing in remounted and that's when my hobby bench light crapped out :'( :'( :'(
It's one of those weird shape ones and had to order one ..should be here next week . So in the mean time I will sit back and enjoy all the other builds .
Alexis
-
Top wing remounted :) now for the rest of the struts ...
Alexis
-
Great to see it as a biplane!
RAGIII
-
Great progress, Alexis. I love the cartoonish look of this Pfalz.
Bye, Manni
-
This is looking just so beautiful, Alexis! Some lovely detailing and it looks just great! Rigging already on the go.... This is progressing well now! Regards, Marc.
-
The very much gentlemen :) If everything goes well I should have this wrapped up by next weekend :)
Alexis
-
A rigging I will go ...a rigging I will go ...hey ho the dairy O a rigging I will go !
My last attempt at the rigging ..after three lines it did me in . Then again I wasn't in a very good place at the time . This time I have made it past three lines and have 6 out of the 12 finished . But before I tackle those , the ones on the other side will get placed .
Alexis
-
Very nice model of this rare plane!
Andreas
-
You go girl!
-
This looks like a big success this time!
Don't push yourself under stress with the rigging. It it is very tight and complicated take a deep breath and do one line per day and work on other models the rest of the time. That way, it will also be finished at some point.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Looking good Alexis. Like Frank said take your time and do the lines at your leisure!
RAGIII
-
Thank you very much for the support guys ! :)
I can say that doing this by candle light is not recommended . ::) My new bulb will be in tomorrow and that will make this task a lot easier ;)
Frank , it is tight with the double bay , but it's no overly complicated and I'm not rushing at it . But it does need to be cleared off the bench so I have room for the other projects on the go right now .
Alexis
-
... and the heat of a candle is quite dangerous to things like rigging lines in 1/48. Not to mention parts glued with CA ::)
Luckily it was only the replaceable bulb, not a crashed down lamp head hitting nearly my Fokker D.V.
Cheers,
Frank

I agree with Frank...Candle light is dangerous. Here is a link to My kind of funny build that was interrupted by a power outage:

No rigging were burnt during the second round of rigging and no hair was harmed either remaining safe and perfect !
Frank , many , many years ago my old work bench light hand one of those clips for it's base . Well that clip broke and the light fell destroying my build . I ended toss the kit and light and will never use that style again .
Rick , nice SE5a ! And thanks for making sure I don't burn down my house ;)
Alexis
-
Okay , no new bulb , it arrived broken so I went a bought a new light at Walmart . 15 bucks ! I like it it will do for now .
I was able to get more then just a line or two done ..I got 7 of them buggers in places with no loss of my sanity or damage . For the cab bracing wires I removed the one gun so I have room to get the line through the eyelet . :)
Alexis
-
Progress at last! :D
-
Thanks a whole bunch Ken ! :)
Alexis
-
The main rigging is now finished . Just two more lines and the landing gear rigging is let . This won't be long before it is finished , the tail will go quick ;)
-
:)
-
Fantastic work on the rigging Alexis! Looking forward to the final photos!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ,
I did finish the rest of the rigging last night so today I can focus on the tail planes . After that it's just a matter of painting the buckles and fixing the prop in place and this one is finished and it feels damn good !
Alexis

She is finished !
More in the complete section .
