Well, what can I say sometimes you just get lucky. I couldn`t resist to inform you that I`m the one lucky bastard who`s going to receive the test frets of the brand new Copper State Models` Caudron G.4 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Of course you can count for a lot of updates this timel! I hope to get it on Monday in the meantime I`ve received brand new images showing the great amount of details of the model.

Good on you, Filip, I know you'll do this Kit justice, looks like a real beauty!! :) :) :)
Cheers,

Looks as though it will have rather more detail than my amateur effort! Congratulatios on being the one chosen to build the first one - it would have been difficult to find someone better.
Stephen.
-
Wow. Good for you. Enjoy and share.
-
Looking forward to your workmanship on this one.
-
What luck Filip. I'll be looking in on this build too! It's about time French A/C aside from Nieps and SPADs got some love.
-
not fair i am jealous. but will enjoy your updates.
-
Good for you sir! Three cheers and a tiger!

So here I am - holding the brand new Copper State Models` wonderful Caudron G.4, which thanks to the courtesy of the guys from Melius Manu (they cooperate with CSM) I am proud to build as the first modeller. (I like the sound of it ;) ;) yeah!) Also many thanks to KrzysiekK, who made that happen.
The model I have are the test frets, therefore it may differ in some minor details from the one that will be sold.
I will get the PE soon, and you will surely know it.
The CSM`s Caudron G.4 is absolutely splendid and now I will point out some of my first thoughts concerning the kit:
1. The wings and their specific construction - which is the hallmark of the G.3 and 4 look magnificent! The texture is superb and the trailling edges are very thin.
2. The nacelle`s fit is very good. The details are sharp. The ejection pin marks are located in such way that no modeller`s intervention is required. The only one there is, is found on the pilot`s seat, where it can be easily removed.
2. The kit`s designers did their best to provide us with a well engineered model. No fit problems, no major filling and sanding. The only part that may require some work is the upper wing, which is made of 3 parts due to technological reasons.
3.The details are crisp, there are some that I really enjoy like the generator and the telegraph in the front cockpit - their quality is superb and there are more to come as the PE parts.
4. Le Rhones 9C look decent, but the true believers ;) would like to have them casted in resin. Who knows maybe the CSM will release the aftermarket Le Rhones 9C. At the back plates of the engines there are small sink marks - which won`t be visible after you install the engine on the model. Also there is a tiny sink mark on one of the props. They are the only ones I found. You need to remember they are the test shots, so I think the kit will not have these issues.
From what I can after a first look - it`s going to be a great model! I`m going to enjoy my build and keep you updated!
I must say I`m thrilled! Great job Edgar and the CSM team!

There are 2 such frets.

Great, you are one lucky modeller :) enjoy the build and I will be following you!

Many thanks, Filip. I'm hoping to get my Caudron at Telford and I'll find your build really helpful.

Thanks for posting, looking forward to your progress.

This kit looks so great! I beg and hpe it will be avaible in 32nd scale.
Anyway, I will definitely follow your build with high interest.
Manni

Keep going on, you are the first one!

This is going to be interesting to follow and compare with my scratch-build and I think that I already know which one is going to be the best!!
Stephen.
-
The only part that may require some work is the upper wing, which is made of 3 parts due to technological reasons.
The upper wing of the G.4 was divided in three parts and featured foldable wingtips, so there is no need to fill the gaps. See here:

Hope it helps. You lucky man!

awesome pic and very usefull link, thanks a lot!

Many thanks for the references!
I finally have something to show you. I started with the Le Rhohes, apart from slightly thick fins of the cylinders they are very good.
I especially like the sparkplugs. I`ve added the pushrods and the wiring. The pictures don`t show the way I weathered them, it was hard for me to take a good picture showing the weathering using the artificial lighting.
Here are the engines after the first coat of primer:

they seems to be pretty.
they look good; anyway my favourite one stay the small stuff engine...
Xan
-
you are totaly right, and the are much better than the Eduard's Nieuports Rhone engines...
With those one no need to by after market...
Xan
-
They look pretty great to me! I'm really looking forward to following the rest of your build and I'm terminally jealous.
-
Thanks!! The engine is pretty good.
Do you have any idea what kind of seatbelts were used on Caudrons?
-
Outstanding looking engines, looking forward to next update.
-
Great engines and great kit.
Geetings,
Manni
-
oh, if those are OOB then I can't wait to see the rest of it :)
Keep up modelling dude, show us the way!

Awesome engines! They look stunning!
RAGIII

Wonderful. I want to buy one eventually. For now I watch you

:) :) :) wonderfull, wonderfull, wonderfull :) :) :)

That is a great start on the engines, Filip! The mouldings look really, really excellent, a lovely kit! I am very tempted... Regards, Marc
-
Superb work on the engines, Filip! This is going to be a truly spectacular model!

Very beautiful picture of a Russian Caudron given by a russian friend...

Xan
-
Many thanks for your kind comments my friends! Xan the picture is trully beautiful!
In the meantime I`ve received the test PE sheet. The one you`ll get with the regular model will be slightly different. Now I can focus on the cockpit`s details and the engine nacelles. The PE is rather impressive with all the rigging fixtures! The only thing I think I would add as the PE are the prop bosses.
I`ve managed to paint the woodgrain - it`s more subtle than usual. The compass is scratch built. You get one with the kit but I think it`s slightly too small. I`ll try to take better pics later. Unfortunately there are no decals for instruments` faces so since I`m pretty bad at painting them I`ve used some leftovers and Airscale`s decals. You get the instruments` bezels as the PE parts which is very nice IMHO.
The detail I like much is the map holder - I`ve fixed some re-sized printed map.
Using the Green Stuff I`ve tried to model the padded button-leather pilot`s seat
(http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s520/xmald/Caudron%20G%204%20Copper%20State%20Models/Caudron%20test%205_zps90ifedku.jpg)
The fit is outstanding - the first time ever I`ve got the sense of Tamiyagawa quality ;)
The nacelle is fitted just for the pics. In the regular mode the fitl is supposed to be even better since it has been improved.

Your interior is looking great! The fit looks terrific and if the production version is even better it will be terrific!
RAGIII
-
Nice detail on the interior. Thank you for giving us updates/review. Looking forward to future posts.

You are really producing a wonderful little gem. I cannot wait until holding this kit in my hands... yummy!!! :)
Borsos

Lovely progress! I'm looking forward to more... this is an unusual but very appealing subject... Regards, Marc
-
Your build is moving along beautifully Filip, excellent work so far.
Des.
-
Thanks for your kind words they keep me motivated!
I thought things over and my conclusion is that if I`m building a test shot model any modifcations to the kit are slightly pointless since both you as viewers and me - the builder would like to know what can you do OOB. That`s why I got the seat and the pretty nice compass as they were straght from the box.
I couldn` t wait and I`ve painted the tail beams with the surfacer. I really like it that the rubber ropes were reproduced.
I`ve also painted the propellers with a reddish tint, since tha majority of the French props were - to my knowledge - painted this way. Along with the props I`ve glued the nacelles - which as in the case of the fuselage just fell into their places. The only spot where I used the putty was the nacelles front - but it was unnecessary since it will be covered with the PE reproduction of metal panels just the same as in the original Caudrons.

I`ve fixed the engines control levers and added their pull rods (streched sprue). Notice the wireless along with its equipment box - there some nice details there! The manufacterer even remembered about the small folded tables/ arm rests for both the pilot and the observer (they are still unpainted in my model).

So far I cannot recommend this kit enough. I have pure fun bulding it. I expect that the model you`ll get within a few days will be even better. Forgive my enthusiasm but the CSM has made my dream about the G.4 come true and they`ve done it up to the highest standards!
-
Congratulation for the prop's color! very closed to french varnish color!

I'm really enjoying following the build, Filip. Great work!
That's a really nice photo, Xan. Thanks for posting it.

Sorry Nigel I take it of beacause it was not the same propeler...
-
Outstanding work (love the propeller color), does not look like its 1/48, but larger. Look forward to your next update, keep up the great work.
-
Magnificent work, Filip! I really appreciate that you are keeping it OOB since I'll be building this one soon.
Cheers,

Very nice! Anxious to see more!

Thanks for your kind words! I hope to finish the nacelles tomorrow, so I`ll be able to provide you with another update.

Hello!
This is another update - maybe not a very spectacular one but I`ve managed to prepare the wings for paintwork. The wing structure is superb IMHO.
Hope to show you something more interesting soon!
I`ve also finished the engine nacelles (with the PE they look very well I think) they require some minor touch ups still.

This is my attempt on wing pre shading. I`m still in a deep admiration of the beautiful wing structure of the kit. Please share your opinions concerning the shading.
I`m slightly in quandry with these metal panels underneath the engine nacelles. I don`t know whether to leave them metal or to paint them the same as the rest of the fittings. What do you think?

Very fine wings, Filip. Shading is alright. And I would leave those metal panels in natural finish. I have looked through the WD and in a few photos I rather see unpainted metal.
-
Oh! Leave the metal and go to town on the engine oil weathering, but not to much.
-
I would suggest leaving it as natural metal but the shine toned down a little, looking great so far.
Des.
-
Your wings look perfect to my eyes! The engine nacelles turned out beautifully and look great with the engine and prop in place in the photos!
RAGIII

Agree 100% with previous postings. They look wonderful.

The wings look fantastic, Filip!

Looking at your photos is re-assuring for me - I seem to have got most of the details right on my build! The interior is superb.
With reference to the panels on the wings I would leave them in natural metal as in all of the many photos that I have studied they seem to have been left unpainted. You could however indicate oil spillage/splattering on them and on the wing surfaces adjacent to them - something I could not do on my model.
Stephen.
-
Long time no see...
Fortunately for me I was able to return to the Caudron.
The engine nacelles - their metal parts are painted with XF 60 lightened up with XF2. The linen covered parts of the nacelles have been brushed with dry pastels, which made them more yellow. And here`s an extremely important question to all of you - should weather the rest of the plane with the pastels (to make them more yellow) or should I leave them as the bottom wing???
The engine cowlings are yet to be painted ;)
I must admit that CSM and Edgar made a good job on the fittings and other PE bits of the kit. I fell in love with the bracing wire mountings (will make some close ups next time) they are a perfect fit and add so much to the model.
I hope to post some updates in much shorter time than this one ;) ;)
PS. the pics just made me realise all the spots that still need some touch ups.

Wonderful update Filip. My 2 cents is leave as bottom wing, but you are the artist. Looking forward to your next post.

Great to see you back on to this build Filip, you have done a superb job with the fuselage nacelle and the engine nacelle, the colours look excellent, and the wing is absolutely brilliant, very well done.

This pic of the National Air and Space Museum's Caudron, who has not be repainted as far as I know shows that:
so metal color seems right!

Excellent work and great photos!

Hi,
Hard to say from this pic angle all differences between linen & wood/metal sides. But the latter one looks ok.
I would leave as it is if your intention is to reflect little usage of plane
good..good & more pics pls:)

Well done, Philip, I support. :)

Many thanks for your kind words!!
I think I`m going to leave the CDL parts as they are without the yellowish tint.
Xan, thanks for the photo! I`m using this G.4 for reference extensively!

Gorgeous work! Your CDL looks great to me!
RAGIII

It is going to be a beauty. No doubt!
Are you going to leave the engine cowlings bare metal or are you going to add some yellowish paint to fit the CDL?
All the best

Great progress, Filip!

I am with Xan and Prez - leave the wings as they are. But at the end of the day it is your choice.
Stephen.

Great Job, Filip! Especially the CDL wings, subtle shading and shine through effect 👍
Jörg

Thanks for your advice! I will certainly follow it and leave the CDL as it is now.
It is going to be a beauty. No doubt!

Borsos I`m going to paint them - I was just testing the metal paint ;)

As promised you didn`t have to wait long for the next update ...
I`ve fixed the engine nacelles and some minor details. I`m really impressed by the PE (I know I`ve said that already but...) Espiecially these tiny bits for the tail booms are great. Now I need to finish shading and painting of the upper wing. I hope to start adding the rigging soon ;D ;D Finally ;)

Yes Xan - this is exactly the plane I want to build!
Thanks for the link to the website it explains a lot to me!

I`ve managed to paint, put the decals on (they work like a charm - Cartograf - and everything is clear ;) ). I`ve also fixed the fittings and made the stitching. I was trying to figure out how to do it painlessly and reached the same conclussion as Jorgo that the best way is to drill holes and thread the fishing line through.
Now I need to fix the upper wing, no worries though since everything fits well.

Superb attention to detail Filip.
Your rendition of framework showing through the fabric is exceptional.
Very talented modelling!

Stunning, wonderful work thus far. Looking forward to your progress.

I do not know about you guys,
but for me it`s clear that it was not possible to make a realistic PE for such a stitching for both side
Awesome progress ! It really looks striking! I join in, I had no idea how to reproduce the stitching in PE. I think your an Jörg's way is the best to do that.
Borsos

The stitching is wonderful. Great idea to use fishing line and a very realistic touch to the model.
Stephen.

Truly stunning work, Filip! Thank you for showing us how to do justice to this marvelous kit. That stitching, especially, is pure genius!
Cheers,
Bud

Excellent fabric effect on the wings

Painting the fabric looks great.
You also have a great sewing abilities. ;)
Adam.

Many thanks for your kind words guys!
As you probably know already rigging is one of my favourite parts so I just couldn`t wait. I`ve fixed the upper wing and attached the first 40 wires. Thanks to the PE fittings the rigging is much easier because in most cases there is no need for turnbuckles but simply using a piece of tube you can make them in the process if you know what I mean ;)

This is turning into a very fine model indeed. Excellent rigging and other detail.
Stephen.
-
Chapeau, Filip, excellent work! Please let me know which material did you use for rigging . Did you paint it light blue?
Highest regards,
Jörg
-
splendid work!
could you tell us more about your way of ringging ?
and perhaps a closer pic?
Xan
-
Many thanks!
I use the 0,08 fishing line painted blue. The buckles are made of the cotton buds tube stretched over the flame and that`s basically it ;)
You just need to use the PE fittings to thread the line and then glue the same end inside the tube and the turnbuckle and the wire is ready.
-
This is eye candy :)

Great! it's exactely the way i think to do them...

Gee it`s hard to believe that it`s been almost one month since the last update...
Nearly 100 turnbuckles and wires done, some more to go ;)
Now I`ll finally be able to see the beautiful silhouette of the G.4 since I`m planning to fix the tail section this week!

Crazy net! You really like it!
pls le me know what kind of paint did you use for the wires, PE sockets etc?

K
-
Superb in every sense.
-
waow great work !
could you add some closer picture of the turnbuckles (and side without turnbuckles) ?
Another thing, Jörg had to use scalpel to install the decals roudels, you didn't idn't it?
Xan
-
Thanks for your kind words! Xan sorry for such late reply... I`ve also used scalpel with the decals - I doubt if anyone can produce decals without necessity of using it on such complicated structure ;)
The kit just fell together - no jig required - can you imagine? The tail section as I thought would be the tricky part but it just went together like a charm - that`s what I call good engineering. Bravo Edgar!
The majority of rigging done. I`ve scratched the alternative gun mount. Not much work left. I expect to see her finished pretty soon.

Many thanks to all of you for your kind words of encouragment!
I think it`s the last update before I finish her. I need to fix the gun and the rest of the decals. I must admit it has been a lot of fun. Those of you who work with WnW and Tamiya kits - ow I know how you lucky bastards feel when everything just falls into place. Definitely one of the best kits I`ve ever had a pleasure to build.
I promise to provide you with more pictures of the details in completed models section...

I confirm the model is fantastic, surely the best model I had in hand...
By the way you don't put the plane a number in the cowling?

Many thanks lads!
