I have begun work on my next build. I will be using parts and pieces of the Part PE detail set. I have assembled the basic cockpit interior and engine, detailing will be done soon. The interior of the fuselage is done in oils, streaked to simulate strips of wood when viewed through the small cockpit opening.

I am having a great deal of trouble posting attachments. I keep getting the file is too large yet the photos are about .42 kbs.

Another try

and the final 2. Please Note that the beautiful PE Peach Basket seat is DECIDEDLY TOO SMALL! I will use one of Rons Resin versions....

Looking good so far ;)

Why not use photobucket or similiar? You'll have virtually no limitation on file size and the presentation here is much nicer.

Bo,
Excellent suggestion. I do have a photobucket account but as of right now I am also having PC issues. Everytime I make a post here I have to refresh the page, go back and re-post. I also have to do the same with Photobucket. So.... Right now the attachments are more convenient even if it is a PITA

Great start, Rick, small pics or not. ;D
I like the woodgrain on the cockpit walls.
Looking forward to next updates.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Brilliant start, Rick. The representation of the wood slats looks convincing. It will be even more so when viewed through that tiny cockpit opening. The Nie28 is funny like that. When I built mine in 1/48 scale, I scratched a lot of cockpit components which became forever invisible once she was all closed up. You did well to replace the seat. That's pretty much all you'll be able to see when she's done.
Cheers,
Bud

Hello Rick:
Looking good so far. I concur with Bud's comments about the cockpit opening and viewing the interior. Not much is visible. It isn't a bad kit and builds into a pretty neat model. One of my favorite WWI subjects. Where are you getting a seat? Is there a website you could post a link to?
Have you decided on markings for it yet?
Looking forward to your next update.

I like what you have done so far Rick, I have this same kit so will be watching your build with a keen interest.

I look forward to continue 8) Be careful because the company Roden is not known with accuracy fit elements !
First thank you for your encouragement! Second, I have built @ 4 Roden 1/32nd kits so I am aware of small fit issues. Fortunately this kit is as Bud said, perhaps Rodens Best! Don't get me wrong, there are issues, but not nearly as difficult to correct as say the interior of the DH2 with Mold release pins in the most in opportune places ;D

The following photos are ORIGINAL COLOR PHOTOS taken by Ray Rimell. They were published in B&W in the Data file. Ray has VERY KINDLY given me permission( he supplied the original color shots), to publish these in my build blog! I would ask that NO ONE break Rays Copy Right by Re- Posting in any other threads or on any other sites! The shape and attachment of the seat is quite evident. These are photos of the restoration of an original, not a replica! The seat photos agree with others relative to shape in the data file of the Swiss interred/captured 28.
THANK YOU RAY!

Thanks for the Comment ! I appreciate your support. I have added the fuel line to the glass tube fuel indicator, added the instrument and several other items. I hope to take pictures later. The interior is done until the seat arrives from Kiwi Resin/Ron.

The latest update. waiting on the seat.
RAGIII

Good progress Rick.
On your photo's - they dont seem to be focused on the subject itself?
Andrew
-
That's looking good, Rick. Are you going to close up the fuselage and then insert the cockpit or, as I wish I'd done, close the fuselage with the cockpit in place?
I found that once the tanks, etc, were added that it took a lot of gentle nudging, prodding and swearing to get the cockpit to slide all the way home. Nothing drastic, but I was worried I'd do some damage in the process.
Dal.
-
Really beautiful job on the cockpit, Rick. Take as many pictures as you can at this stage, buddy, 'cause it's all about to disappear. You're making me want to build another. This really is a sweet kit.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Great job in that interior.
The wood effect in the structure and fuselage it's very nicely achieved.
About the pictures, they are in fact a little blured. IMO two things can make that: too much zoom, zooming to close of subject and/or not enough light.
Anyway keep those pics coming!
Cheers

Really good looking cockpit, Rick. Thanks for posting the
prototype photos. Helpful stuff! It's such a shame most
of your good work will be out of sight when the fuselage
is buttoned up. :( Oh well, as a Nieuport would say...
C'est la vie. ;)

Guy, Not so brave! The kits take work but are really overall not as bad as most perceive. They aren't WNW but they can be built,as others have shown, to a high standard by a "True" Craftsman!" I fall somewhere in between ::)
RAGIII

Good news for today! My Seat arrived from Ron. Very Nice and I will have it painted and detailed with belts in the next 2 days!
RAGIII

I did a little work on the Engine. Like the interior the detail will disappear once the Cowling is on so I didn't go too crazy 8) I also experimented with some Splatter of oils on the firewall and inside of the cowling.

Nice job on the engine Rick. I have to say that building these rotary engines are my favourites as there's just the right amount of extra detail to add for my tastes.

Thanks Chris. Your comments are appreciated! As for the details on the engine it should actually have 2 plugs per cylinder. I just couldn't bring myself to cut off the kit supplied plugs, and scratch build 18, on something that won't be seen. ;D

Here is my latest update. I received Rons beautiful Resin Seat. I don't know if it is due to my assembly of the interior or another issue but the seat would not fit in my Pre Assembled interior framework. My E Mail was down due to my PC issues and I kind of gave up on Rons seat. I started a 3 hour process of trying to modify the kit seat to the "Peach Basket" style. My far less than satisfactory results are shown in the first 2 pictures. On the Plus side this effort was a learning experience and I could SEE, and more importantly "Feel", Yes I am a Tactile Learner", where I went wrong and felt confident I could scratch build a better example. I then thought of sending Ron a PM. He suggested a method to adapt the width of the seat to make it fit, I went a step further and sanded off the bottom leaving the peach basket sides, then reshaped the cushion to match the Roden seat width. I then re-glued the sides to the cushion and had a very nice, narrower seat. Ron was very supportive and without his initial suggestion of a V cut in the seat I wouldn't have thought to fix my issue as I did! I want to note that the seat as Ron supplies may fit/work if built in from the start, or also if using the Part PE framework which Ron used as a reference. The last pictures are of my modified Ron Kootje Models seat. Sorry but again a bit fuzzy! Finally although the process sounds difficult, the ultimate fix of Rons seat took about 10 minutes of sanding and gluing time!!!!

Now the Modified seat from Ron:

Very nice chair.
I have one question: Did you check the engine will fit in cowling.
In my Ni-24 engine did not fit. I had to a lot of grind.

Hi Rick:
I picked up one of Ron's seats and will be watchful of fit when I tackle another Nie. 28. I think you are doing stellar work and I appreciate your approach to the engine. The cowling hides much of what could be super detailed, suffice it that you are giving it that well worn look. The spark plugs are no longer visible once the cowling except maybe from the back side.
Looking forward to more as you progress.

Thanks Mark. My seat is in, the cockpit installed and the fuselage is together. Never did get the seat situated quite right. I think I will do another someday myself and build the interior around the seat. After all I will have a 28 from the 27th pursuit Squadron so it should have a partner from the 94th ;D Someone asked earlier about the markings. I remembered I hadn't answered. I am using the superscale sheet with Elliotts #9.
RAGIII

Here is the latest update. The interior is now installed and the fuselage assembled. (The lower wing is just placed in position). I cleaned up the engine ,just slightly, by using SNJ polishing powder dry brushed on. The next steps are tedious, Filling and sanding, and drilling holes for rigging.

Vladimir,
Thanks for the compliment on the cockpit! From you a compliment is always appreciated. Yes, Roden kits take a lot more work than WNW! That being said they are buildable and look nice when finished. As Bud said, this just might be Rodens best Mold!! I have a request, Although not up to WNW standards, The kits would certainly benefit from some ATTENTION by Manufacturers such as yourself. Some nice resin details, PE, seat belts, Machine Guns, Decals, etc., etc., ;D
RAGIII

Rick,
Outstanding progress my old friend. Lovely work on her engine too. It's kind of a shame not much of your work will show. I really like the effect you got using the SNJ Powder. I hadn't used the stuff in years and I'm glad to see it's still around.
As for the seat. It certainly did turn out excellent. So major kudos to you and Ron as well. I'm sure you've seen photos of the two piece seat too, but I never could find any additional information on the two piece seat. I suspect it's from the later 28A model used by the Navy post WW I .
Keep up the outstanding work my old friend.

Gregory,
It is always great to hear your comments, they are always appreciated!!! Rons seat is great and it would have to be an intentional effort to make it look bad ;D As for the SNJ Powder, not sure that it is "Still Around". I have had this bottle for 20 years or more :-\
The seat done by Ron is certainly one version. If you look closely at the color photos I posted supplied by Ray Rimell you will notice a little different shape. I think this is "The Actual" shape of the WW1 version. Funny but I just got the Marcos kit from Ira in the mail today and although 1 dimensional, it represents the shape I see in Rays photos 8) I don't remember but I think I mentioned that at the point where I tried and failed to convert the kit seat, I did realize how to scratch build one to a HIGHER STANDARD. I guess now I will apply that to 1/24th ;)

Ai ai ai... it's so hard to opine. :P
From what i can see (didn't calibrate my lappy screen color) the first image looks a little bit darker.
I'll "vote" that first one... looks like the perfect color for that 1/32 scale and a nice margin to weathering.
Woot you people think?

Thanks for your opinion Zabu! In actuality the colors are the same in both photos. I posted 2 because the light made them look a little different so I figures other modelers would have a better idea of the colors I have chosen. So far I have heard no objections so I will probably go with those listed.

Here are a series of pictures from the painting process. One nice thing about Silly Putty Masking is that as long as the paint is surface dry there are no worries about lifting any previous coats. So... it goes quickly. Just a little touch up and on to the pastels and rib tape effect, then the undersurfaces.

Thanks Ernie. Yes, the Silly Putty really is an EASY masking medium for hard line camo. I stop my Airbrush down like I am going to paint a free hand soft edge. This actually allows great control and there is actually hardly any paint on the putty in the end! I finished yesterdays session with the undersurface being painted. I am now working 7 out of 8 days so may be a while before any more progress shots are available :(

Now for the fun part: upper wingy bit. Going to be a nice addition to your collection.

Thanks Mike! Yes, mounting the upper wing is always an adventure, especially for me as I do it by hand, no jigs!!

The 28 is officially a Bi Plane Now! Not too much difficulty as the cabanes really work well to anchor and line everything up:

Thanks Gregory! I am working on the fin/rudder painting and decaling! Since the major rigging is already anchored shouldn't take long to get that done!

Simply gorgeous, buddy! Too bad you didn't wait till Oct to start this one ;). Eventually, I plan on doing the same scheme in 1/48 scale. I love those markings and your painting and decal placement are flawless.
Cheers,
Bud

Here are some photos of the latest progress. The main rigging is complete. During the tightening process 3 wires came loose from their anchor point on the fuselage . I had to go back and re drill holes in a very tight space. Took a while but I made it work.

I hope by interesting paint scheme you mean something other than Rickenbackers 12 ::)

Thanks Ed! I agree about the schemes. The 28 is a sleek bird with graceful lines!! Somewhere in the distant future I would like to do another one as Erroll Flynns Bird from The Dawn Patrol, clipped wings ,I struts, bumblebee markings on a Silver Doped/Grey airframe, British roundels......

Just a quick verbal update, pictures will follow later this evening. I have finished the rigging. ( Just need to represent turnbuckles), and all of the stenciling is on. I am a couple of clear coats and a little touch up away from Sticking a Fork in this one 8)

Look forward to seeing it completed, RAGIII!

Nice work! Are you going to splatter-up the underside of the wingy area as well? Nice build of a USAS plane.

Fabulous Rick. I just got in your posts. I like it very much. Your engine is beautifully done and the colours are great, camouflage perfectly done. Congratulations!!

That's brilliant, Rick, really first class work. So are you going to open up a "Show us your...." page?
Did you have any problems getting the interplane struts to fit? I've just dry-fitted the top wing and the rear struts seem a little long.
Cheers.
Dal.

Yours is a very fine Ni28, Rick. Great job!

Hi Rick,
As I said to Dal, I ordered a Roden Nieuport 28 too, and as I did before I will closely watch your build (when I start that one). Your work is magnificent Rick!

This kit is really very well done with the exception of the seat! Ron has taken care of that issue so really no reason not to go for it! Thanks for tuning in,

Dal,
No real problems beyond those that I normally self create :o The fact is that I use no jigs or alignment tools! I am a SEAT OF THE PANTS MODELER! I am sure this shows to those that are GREAT sometimes ::)
I will comment further on your thread but I must say your 28 is certainly better in many respects. We all have our Competencies !

Blimey Rick, this is a beauty. I can't cope with this; I just keeping adding to the list of the models I want to make because I have been inspired by others. If I carry on at my current pace of about one or two a year I'll be about 110 by the time I finish.
Best wishes
Nigel

Yep, a Beauty Rick!
Love the colours..

Thanks Nigel, I truly appreciate your comment! I had the same issue with my stash, ( Actually still do), so I recently traded away ALMOST all of my 1/48th kits for a few 1/32nd. That being said, I have about 12 1/32nd kits in the Stash. I am 60 so at 2 per year I will/ may have a shot at finishing them. Of course we all know I will continue to ADD to the 1/32nd stash ::)
