Waiting for the Friedrichshafen FF.33 L from Lukgraph to arrive.
So, I have decided to scratch build one of the rail cars used at Zeebrügge. It will add some additional 'atmosphere' to the build.
This very characteristic way of transport seams to have been unique for the Zeebrügge Naval Base.
The build is more or less a kind of 'freestyling' because the lack of drawings.

I've build the car around the railroad wheels from Miniart and various Evergreen profiles.

Now I just have to wait for the FF.33 L to arrive...

Well done indeed, Kent. Building the car from minimal references must have been a challenge, but your result is a beautiful representation of what the photos show. You'll have such a unique display when your project is complete.
Cheers,

That wagon is superb - the more so as you had to make up most of it from just photographs. It will make a unique element in your model display.

Thanks Guy's - Appreciate the nice comments!!!
I'm super happy with the end result.
Now I'm feeling like a stupid little kid looking out the window to see if the Postman has delivered something!

Super cool stuff, Kent.
The railcar looks great and gives us all a great reference for future builds. Thank you for sharing this.
Bye, Manni

Nice railcar Kent. The last pic is a nice one for additional atmosphere but then you have to scratchbuild a crane ;)

great idea and beautifully realized!

Really great scratchbuild and an amazing eye on detail. I love it!
Andreas

Great idea, great realization! I am looking forward to your FF33L landing on this wagon!

Do we know how they were moved around? I doubt it was locomotives due to the overhang of the aeroplane
Man power? Horses? Capstans?
Richard

Right - forget that!:

Ok, so I've decided to do another rail car, different type...
It's a much more simple version than the other one.

Great, Kent. The railcar, the base and the figures look great. Now you can just place everything on it and it will look fantastic. For example a cactus, some cheese or a bottle of wine. But the FF will be best.

Your absolutely right Rick, we all seem have our own 'style'.
I for one admire Przemol's and others for their clean builds.
I never ever quite seem to get there. It always ends up being a bit dull and 'murky' for lack of a better word...
Some of the 'Show us your' threads shows the different approaches nicely.
Btw: I have finally decided the subject of the Friedrichshafen FF.33L.
FF.33L CHFT Marine Number '1162' on a rail car at Zeebrügge. Unfortunately I haven't had any luck identifying the Pilots.

I think you should give yourself more credit then that Kent , your builds are nice and clean work and an inspiration to us all :)
Alexis

Kent your work is absolutely beautiful 'dull and murky are not words that spring to my mind when I see your builds. I tend to have 'astounding and virtuosic' on the tip of my tongue. I'm really enjoying seeing this come to life.

This is the best compliment I have heard on my models, Kent. I have to stress, that I admire your work, your special touch that I am never able to achieve.
And as for the cleanness of my builds, you must be exaggerating... If you see them in real, they will not appear so clean... That said, I would love to meet you some day at a fine modeling contest, when we could see our models in reality and chat about them...
And I am glad you found the subject for your model. Looking forward to see it progress and reach the completion.
-
Thank you for your kind words PrzemoL.
I think we are getting inspiration and learn a lot from each other.
Especially in this very 'narrow' forum of wood, wire and canvas ;)
Regarding the Subject: I want to a FF.33L with the German Naval Hex linen, but I haven't been able to pin down when it was introduced on the FF.33L's - I suspect it being from the February 1917 batch. MN 1234-1278 where all of those identified have it. Unfortunately I can't make it out in the photo of MN 1162, so I may have to pick another one. Right now I'm closing in on 1247 or perhaps 1262/63. Lets see how it goes.
Cheers: Kent

Hi,
Michael Schmeelke wrote an indeep book on Zeebrügge; as far as I remember small steam locomotives were used 0-2-0 types or the like; I'll look it up for you.
cheers, Gunther

Thanks Günther, that would be awesome having a locomotive (not promising anything)

Great engine, Kent. The spring looks terrific and the wiring makes the engine look very good.

Gorgeous engine, indeed. I still wonder, what will you do with it. Bury inside the fuselage? ;)

Thank you Manni & Przemol!
I have another Benz Bz III engine, this will be used for the FF.33L built, saving the Lukgraph from being 'buried inside the fuselage'

Since I found this rather nice photo, I've decided to 'convert' the built into the FF.33L CHFT Marine Number 1247.
Up until not these are the alterations I will need for this:
Wireless + antenna & generator (HB W.29)
Different radiator and a leftover propeller from the Hansa kit, Axial?
Extra wing fuel tank and fuel leads.
I will also be reworking the Observers 'coaming' as it looks to me, to be a bit on the small side + the parabellum 'ring' (HB W.29).
Different windscreen. I will be using Aviattic German Naval Hex - Faded.

Are the insulators on the fuselage side for the radio ?
Alexis
I'm not very 'electric' but I haven't seen them on FF.33L type's other than the CHFT ones, so I guess it is?
The generator is mounted on the other side of the fuselage...
Would be nice though, if there were someone 'out there' who had the knowledge ;)

Progress on the Friedrichshafen built:

The fuselage is assembled, putty'ed and sanded some. I've rebuilt the observers coaming to fit the ring from the HB W.29.
(Shrunken a bit, to look the part)
The wings have been painted in a base color, top white and bottom Gunze Sail color. Wholes for rigging has been drilled and they are now ready for masking.

Haha , same as me Kent . I'm not electrical either but I do have the sense not to put my tongue on a 9 volt battery and don't get the out lets wet when cleaning walls !

Making some nice progress on the build and is shaping up wonderfully :)

Hi Kent ,
After doing some reading this afternoon to me this sounds like this is a transmitter and receiver only fitted to CHFT .
Nice masking job :)
Alexis
-
Thank you Alexis!
I've been trying to find details of the wing fuel tank, present on the CHFT variant.
I haven't been able to find any close up photos of the FF.33L with sufficient detail to be of help.
Then it struck me that maybe other Friedrichshafen models may have had the same tank?
In the Windsock album on the FF.33E page 6 top, there is a very clear photo of the tank, at least on some FF.33E's?
Next, at first the bottom of the tank was a mystery to me, but taking a closer look at the many photos
it was quite obvious what is going on...
It looks like there is some kind of 'sump' in the bottom of the tank, that extends to the fuel line.
This is a closeup of the tank on a FF.49, looks a little different, but the same principle.
Cheers: Kent

Kent , went through the datafile again this afternoon and there I was looking at the top of wings and for the scheme I'm doing ( Wulfchen ) wolf cub even though this is a FF-33E it doesn't have a wing tank mounted . It is hard to tell in some of the photo's but you are right that some ( E types ) had the wing tank mounted . So it makes me wonder if the tank was added to suit long distance sorties . Then again I could be waaaay off in left field which happens through out my life ...but Hey ! I'm blonde and pretty and can pull it off flawlessly ;)
I also noted the on the one side of the wing it appears to be painted darker then what the right side is . Looking at the tank even though this bird took a nose dive it doesn't look it the was installed in field ?

Hi Alexis, I've been trying to wrap my head around this 'wing tank enigma'.
Two color wing scheme and wing tank.
Plan from 'Herris' Friedrichshafen book with the wing tank...
Reading through the chapter on the FF.33's the CHF type FF.33E (wireless) had the wing tank.
Most FF.33E's were HFT's that's probably why some photo's doesn't show the tank being present.
Cheers: Kent
I found this photo (and now I cannot find it again) of a FF.33E build of the crashed plane.

Hi Kent,
Another unique build ;D
I see you've finally settled on the rolling stock.
Now you're on the right 'track',
Mike

The masking on the wings looks great. The strips remind Me that I need to order some of Bobs Strippers ;D
RAGIII

Thanks Kent ,
I don't have Harris's Book , just the Datafile on the the E type so part of the scale drawing is helpful for me . As you know the drawings in the datafile are in 72 and 144 scale . And are different form what you posted so now I have questions about the floats ::)
Will have to add the gap when joining the upper wing , the instructions in Techmods kit ...glue them together .
I do hope you are able to find more info in regards to the wing tank Kent . With only limited info and this time google was not helpful at all I can't provide anymore info at this time . But I will keep digging ;)

Hi Alexis, do you want to know if the 'Wölfchen' had the wing tank?
Regards: Kent

I've been missing the thread, you did a great work so far and the rail cars add a master touch. Looking forward to see the completed jewel!
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Thank you Giuseppe, for your kind words! ;)
Kent
-
Hi Kent ,
Yes , that would be helpful .
Alexis
-
OK, so...
First of all the Herris book is saying, as already mentioned, that most FF.33E's were HFT type:
It also states Marine Number 841 (Wölfchen) being a HFT type:
Then there are a couple of the well known photos of 'Wölfchen':
It's not completely obvious, but when you know what to look for, I think it becomes quite clear that MN 841 which had wireless
installed was a HFT, and the HFT's had the wing tank. MN 725 is the first E with the type HFT and the last E HFT is MN 884.
Other types would have had the tank in the centre, right above the cockpit.
Kent
-
Looks like I'm adding a wing tank to Wulfchen after all . Thank very much Kent for this :) Big hug !
Alexis
-
That over wing filler - I suspect it is actually an air vent with a cover. Have a check of it from different directions, you may find it has a 'streamlined' shape
Richard
-
Exactly...
Kent
-
There you go - it's an air vent
I don't know this for sure, I suspect that tank was filled from the main tank by air pressure.
The engine has an air pump that pressurises the fuel tank to give a fuel feed to the carburettors. It would be pretty easy to switch the pipes around with valves to push fuel up to the wing tank instead

Nice shading Kent :)
And only hex loz on the upper side only and no rib tapes ?
Did FF do the taping like HB did by matching the tape pattern with the hexes ?
Thanks again for the info Kent , whether it is a tank or a vent with a cover it will be added to my wings .
Alexis

I'm enjoying seeing the meticulous research and preparation you put into your work Kent. I'm learning a lot about how top modellers to approach a project.
Richie

I am liking the pre shading effects to date Kent. Looking forward to more!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Richie and Rick, there is a lot of research going into this, the 'sources' are scarce.
And only hex loz on the upper side only and no rib tapes ?
Did FF do the taping like HB did by matching the tape pattern with the hexes ?
Alexis
The German Naval Hex pattern didn't have rib tapes Alexis.
I also suspect the FF.33L being one of the first to be camouflaged with it?
As I understand some of the Naval Hex patterns were 'painted' on in the beginning.
This photo seems to support that, looking closely at the pattern there is not only a difference in direction but also a
difference in size of the pattern. I believe the naval hex fabric was used on the fuselage and the wings Hex Pattern
painted on on top of the previous color? At least that's the theory
(https://i.imgur.com/YLGEfE0.jpg)
This 'pattern' has obviously given me some 'headache' but luckily Lukasz Sznajder has come to the 'rescue' and
offered me some assistance, printing hex patterns in different sizes, and I am looking forward to be trying them out on this built.
Cheers: Kent

The Hex differences should make for an interesting and effective addition to your model!

Thank you Gent's! I appreciate you are 'tagging' along - It's turning out to be the same story as usual...
I decided to built the kit out of the box and now I find myself rebuilding, scratching and 'hacking' my way through this kit!!
Now I'm using the time waiting for the Hex decals to do something about some of the issues with the floats...
Doesn't look like much, but the 'nose' has been widened to make it less pointed.
They have also been shortened to get the right shape of the front.
Found this photo of the construction of Friedrichshafen floats, showing the 'step's
and the reason why the 'stringers' are placed where they are.
The bottom has been fitted with new 'stringers' and i have created the sharp steps of the floats.
The fuselage is coming along, with some minor altercations to fit the MN 1247.
The forward engine 'ventilation? has been removed, those in the back have been 'opened' to an earlier version.
Four small vents have been added to the front of the cowling.
The propeller and the spinner have been painted.
I've also started on scratching the converted radiator of the CHFT version.
The tail part have been cleaned up, preshaded and fitted with brass rods to have better control for fitting.
Cockpit coaming done and the ring from the HB W.29 has been fitted to fit the new observers seat.
Cheers: Kent

Great work, Kent. And special thanks for your heads-up and corrections of the floats. I have just made the same to the steps on mine.😉

That is some really impressive work Kent . I do like how the floats turned out with the added missing details . The floats in my project aren't correct in shape or details and require more work . Also like your pershading for the fabric areas , just the right amount :)

I just came upon another 'anomaly' looking at the aerial photo of the CHFT MN 1263 and it it suddenly struck me
that the tail plane and elevators are different?
So I've been digging a bit, and the Herris Friedrichshafen book actually has this noted in the production numbers
as a 'revised tail'.
From the production batch of january 1917 MN No's 1158-1177 the revised tail was introduced.
This unfortunately leaves not many FF.33L's with the early production tail, only around approx.
40 FF.33L's were produced from september to december 1916 up until Marine Number 1126
Now if the production list in the Herris' book can be trusted? 20 of them were C2MG (Pilot fixed gun)
and 20 were CHFT (Wireless transmitter and receiver) this leaves none with the configuration of the kit
which has no fixed gun nor the wireless :(
Sorry but that's the facts of the production list by Herris?

The pre shading turned out fantastic Kent! Your work on the floats is also first class as always. Interesting details you are digging up. Sounds like some conversion work lies ahead in your build?

Well that sucks in ways Kent . I didn't even notice the difference before hand until now going back at looking at the photo's post and the kit parts .
Are you going to make the new tail parts or leave as is ? Most notiable difference is the rudder and fin . Wish I could help you with answer in regards to Herris info being in error ...it could be type O's happen and items get missed on the editing . But I don't think that is the case .

Yeah well it's all part of the process. 'God forbid' building a kit OOB...

So on to the 'surgery' - Superimposing the different tails on top of each other, Doesn't look too bad.
No trouble at all, fortunately the new shape is not too far from the kit tail planes and smaller ;)
A little progress on the floats...
I've replaced the struts with massive brass ones drilled far into the floats.
Thats the way I'm used to do my scratched floats, adds a lot of 'rigidness' to the structure.

Fantastic work on the tail planes , nice easy fix and far better then having to cut new one form sheet stock . Love the floats !

The printed naval hex sheets from Lukgraph have arrived...

The colors could be tweeked a bit, but overall I like the result, not too stark in the coloring.

How are the decals for handling and did you need any setting solutions ? I don't think I ever recall seeing these used before .

They are really easy to work with, I used Tamiya Mark Fit Decal Solution, but I don't think it was even necessary...

Sorry Richie, but I feel the progress on this one is kinda slow? I'm pounding myself why I haven't done the wings yet!

Looking fantastic Kent, those Lukgraph Hex decals are impressive to say the least! I like the "blended and subtle" presentation they provide and the pre-shading is perfect. This is going to be a spectacular model when completed!

No way! I build at this rate to just get it done but you are producing something truly special. Don't forget the many hours of research and planning you have done, that has taken a huge chunk of time. Time well spent though, I'm very much enjoying seeing a masterpiece appear at your gifted hands!

Another stunner with brown hex decals !!
I have been looking for decent brown hex for ages !!
Those decals look fabulous - In fact they actually look a lot better than the Blue/grey hex that are commonly available -
You have got them in 1/32 - Do you know if they are available in 1/48 as well ?
After reading your recent post I went to the Lukraph site, but no hex decals are listed ???
Were the decals you used done especially for you ? if not, perhaps you could ask Lukasz to up-date his web-site and include this interesting addition to his WWI products
Are you able to indicate prices ?
Looking forward to your next inspiring installment on this build
kind regards
David

Thank you David, I'm glad you like the naval decals. Yes Lukasz approached me and we are collaborating on the Hex decals.
I have the same sentiments toward previous available decals, being too dark or too stark in contrast.
Thankfully Lukasz gave me the opportunity to get a hex pattern that fits my 'interpretation' of the German naval hex colors.
These are 'prototype' prints, and will be available from Lukgraph at some point, when we have decided what 'tweeks', if any
will be necessary. I'm sure Lukasz can be persuaded to do them in 1/48 scale if the interest is there.

Now I have to finish the wings with the larger pattern, before we know what the next step will be, please be patient with me!

Looking forward on seeing the main wings :)

I suggest to offset pattern on ailerons a little (as seen on your photo), it looks weird when it continues from wing to them...
Inspiring build anyway! :)

Thanks for the heads up!
-
If the printed fabric was applied chordwise with careful attention to match the seams so there would be full hexagons, why would they not match the aileron covering to the rest of the wing?

I'm pretty sure they didn't bother lining up the pattern of the ailerons when applying the fabric :)

The wing fuel tank is in place.

Yep, exactly. And there's no need to speculate as it's visible from photo.

As others have stated, great looking decals and the brown colour is just fantastic!
I assume ailerons were skinned before they were attached to the wings... if so, it's probably likely that the patterns wouldn't match precisely.

The decals look real nice. 👍

Thanks all, I've had some trouble doing the wings and had to start all over.
By mistake I put some alcohol into the varnish when I finishing the wings the first time.
This made the 'magenta' bleed and they became reddish. I should have known because
I've had the same issue with the decals I'm printing myself!
It has nothing to do with the decals, they are great. They went down very well, in one piece on every wing!
I'm quite happy with the end result, being 'prototype' decals and all.

Some of the details of the CHFT model (wireless) in place. Generator from the WNW's W.29 kit + Compass at the wing root.
The MG ring is also 'procured' and adapted from the W.29 kit.

Thank you for your comments, Frank, Alexis, Richie & Rick. It demands a little perseverance to get this kit 'up to speed' but I absolutely needed the Friedrichshafen FF.33 L in my collection and now I'm very close to the goal. Just need to do some touch up all around...
