Title: Revell 1/48 S.E.5a
Post by: Early Bird Fan on July 04, 2021, 08:03:19 PM
I started this kit a while ago and have been slowly plodding on with the build in the background. This is the Revell edition of the Eduard 1/48 kit, it has some great detail for a 1/48 and the cockpit build has taken me a while to complete. I'm aware the rib stitching/tape is a bit over scale but as a brush painter i tend to lose details (even with thin coats) so i'm happy to not make any changes in these areas and we'll see how it looks once painted. Here's where i'm at so far...

The obligatory box and sprue shots...
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51211287727_9eb3532b0c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m2neEF)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51211287712_351752360c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m2neEq)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51211287692_2c94ce80b5_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m2neE5)

I'd started by painting the main parts that make up the cockpit framework, i spent last night removing said parts and assembling them to make up the cockpit framework. I need to add the seatbelt decals then i can fit the seat, there's still a fair few parts that need to go on but this is all i currently have painted. I also need to do some post assembly touch ups but here's what i've got so far
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51211995381_6e46d65f8b_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m2qS2B)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51211995376_b2dd87aa8d_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m2qS2w)

The cockpit floor area is painted and luxuries like rudder pedals and some ammo have been fitted. I took the opportunity while this section was easy to handle to mask the underside of the wing to try for some rib tape effect.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51248212721_c03233de1d_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m5Cubv)

Cockpit tub is nearly complete, next step is to fix it to the lower wing section then fit the gauges etc
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51248407038_68785bb6bb_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m5DtWN)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51247492557_88f20beac8_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m5yN6T)

I've also got the engine assembled and painted, maybe a surprising lack of detail when compared to the cockpit area and there's plenty of scope for adding wires and hoses. As the only part that will be seen however is the rocker covers i've decided not to waste time adding such details
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51247492552_6bcbc6b159_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m5yN6N)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51248407018_7274192eb0_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m5DtWs)

The cockpit framework is now firmly attached to the wing and all fixtures and fittings are in place. The decal for the gauges isn't the best but once in place it won't really notice. The fit is tighter than trying to get big ben down the westminster tube line but copious amounts of fettling had it fitting quite nicely.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51261020531_30b6509fa4_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6L8uP)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51261020516_4ec2997bdf_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6L8uy)

Also finished the paint on the inside of the fuselage
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51262067530_263e6855c4_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6RuJw)

A quick test fit shows there's still fettling to be done to get the fuselage halves in place but nothing a good scrapping won't sort out
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51261221893_3d52d0afa0_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6Mamz)

The marriage is now complete, plenty of test fitting with making minor adjustments here and there was the order of the day
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51264171698_e2814d6f83_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m73heh)

The underside needs a bit of work but it's mainly around the floor section, the main seam along the fuselage is pretty good and a good sanding should sort it.

After having a spectacular failure with this kit I am always pleased to see it going together. Especially to such a high standard as this!

That's looking great so far and coming together very nicely!

I built the very same kit last year so looking forward to seeing how your take on this kit comes out

Somehow I have missed this one - probably because it is the wrong scale!

You have certainly made a cracking start on it - the cockpit is well detailed and the remainder of the assembly looks as though this is going to result in another first class model.

thanks for looking in and the positive comments

Have got some more done on this over the last few days, underside of wings and ailerons etc have been painted, i tried for a wing tape effect, it's kinda worked but not as visible as i'd maybe like, but on the other hand subtle is also good so not sure how i feel about it atm. I also wanted a slightly random dirty look so the 2nd coat of paint was pretty much a wash which i think has worked quite well. As usual brush painted with a mix of enamels

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51314831325_400baedbb9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mbvVz8)

Cabanes have also been fitted so next step is drill rigging holes then paint.

thanks all for the comments and encouragement

it's now had it's second coat of paint, i was hoping 2 coats would be enough but a third coat will be needed just to cover some areas. Big thanks to Rag for the fabric crease tips, i added mine using acrylic putty, for a first attempt i'm pretty happy with them

That looks super EBF. The addition of the acrylic for the stretched fabric is a first class idea - I too will be keeping that in mind for future reference.

thanks for the comments and feedback, very much appreciated

the painting on this one is now done (apart from maybe a bit of weathering/highlighting), it's come out a tad darker than i wanted but it's well within range of being decent. As usual it's my own mix of oil paints, in this case yellow ochre/ivory black and i added some vandyke brown just to try and add a brownish tinge to it. The engine is now fitted along with the engine cover, the prop is also painted and i think it's looking quite honky (prop is just hung on for the purpose of taking pics)

Your SE is really taking shape! I like your PC 10 mix. I plan to work in some oils on mine, a 50/50 mix of Ivory black, cadmium yellow, and just a drop of Harrison red. I am looking forward to your next update!

many thanks for your comments, the colour has grown on me a bit and it somehow seems a bit lighter now  :D

A shift change at work to help cover holidays has meant not a lot of bench time the last few weeks but i have managed to get a couple of small things done.

firstly the interplane struts are now painted, just a couple of small touch-ups on the aluminium ends and they're good to go
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51386984647_2cd47d7d6b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mhTJeV)

i've also got the exhausts painted, i wanted these to look a bit manky so i stippled on some acrylic plastic putty to give them a bit of texture. That was followed by a couple of coats of rust then matt black on top, left that for a couple of days to dry.  Then used a stiff brush that i'd cut the bristles down on a while back with some enamel thinner to slowly remove the black, theory being it should make it look like the rust is coming up through the black paint and the texture will slightly simulate lumpy rust. I've gone a bit too far in some places and a little too much of the white primer is visible but overall they do look manky  :D

Neat detail painting on the struts EBF, they look excellent. I like that idea for giving a rust effect on the exhausts, I've only met two SE5a before and their exhausts were definitely manky!

thanks all for the comments and continuing support for this build.

i'd been neglecting this build for a while, mainly because it was at the top wing marriage stage and i needed to be in the right frame of mind to tackle it. Happy to report it's now married and with no major issues, as mentioned previously the lugs on the end of each interplane and cabane strut seemed a little long so i trimmed them all down and it all pretty much fell in to place. I'll be touching up the top wing once the rigging is done, a job which i'm actually kinda looking forward to doing.

thanks for the comments and i agree, the top wing going on is a major step forward and one job i fear the most  :D

I'm now about halfway through the main rigging with no dramas other than a drill bit snapping clean off in one of the holes while i was just passing the drill through to clean out any paint. Had to drill a new hole next to it which means one of the double wires is slightly more spaced apart near the fuselage but to the naked eye it's not really visible. Also fitted the manky exhausts, need to finish painting the landing gear and once that's fitted i can finish the rigging

I know what you mean with the top wing... With all models I find that the stakes increases during the build. That is natural of course, the more you add the more there is to potentially destroy in the next step. But building WWI aircraft is a lot more stressful than  other builds. Adding that top wing is always a hazardous task!

Well done anyway! Pretty and inspiring!

thanks for the comments guys, this project is getting nearer to the finish line. It's now up on it's legs and has the elevators fitted, the decals have added some much needed colour and the main rigging is now complete. I need to trim the rigging tails and then do some touch ups on the upper wing then i can finish adding the decals. I've started the rear rigging and the first run just needs pulling tight, i might give the decals a sanding to see if i can get rid of the carrier film.
