Afternoon all,
After my trials and tribulations over the Fokker D.VII :P - and a 4 month absence, I’ve decided to go for a mojo building Tamiya build :) to get me back in the swing.
The quite new Tamiya Spitfire Mk.I, golly what a super kit, I haven’t made a Tamiya kit for ages and what a pleasure it is already, what a shame they’ve never delved into WW1.
As it’s a confidence building exercise - it’ll be out of the box, just the Eduard ‘Look’ instrument panel (which comes with pre painted belts - one area you could improve on the kit - comes with their usual stiff, unpainted steel PE). I do have masks too (thanks Fredrik ;D ). I’m planning on building Douglas Bader’s BoB mount - P9443, this is an option in the Eduard ‘Last of the Few’ boxing, but not in the Tamiya box, hence the masks (and they’re nicer anyway :) ).

The Eduard Mk.I is smothered in detailed rivets, the Tamiya kit isn’t. I personally think they both look great, just comes down to personal preference. There’s also something luxurious about a Tamiya build, it feels like a guilty pleasure building one.
Here are some early shots - I cracked open the box yesterday afternoon. The cockpit looks really detailed. But as expected, everything just falls together with very little effort!

Great choice to slip back into the saddle with Guy, and no one can see too many Spitfires! I agree, Tamiya does a wonderful Kit and it is a shame they have avoided the WW.I era. My last "Off Topic" Build was their new 1:32 Scale Mk. IX Spit and it was an incredible and enjoyable box of modelling wonder! Based on that experience I couldn't resist their Mk. XVI boxing and I am much looking forward to it!
I'll be following this Build with interest, enjoy!
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Lance,
Yes, I’ve built both of those and the Mustang, and as you say, it’s a modelling experience everyone should partake in!
Just imagine a WW1 1/48 series, it would be like getting Wingnuts back :D
Guy

Will be following along on this one Guy :) when I can
Alexis

Glad to have you Alexis :D
I finished off the interior yesterday, (Tamiya XF-71), all goes together like a dream as you’d expect. They manage to have a super detailed interior, but it’s simplicity itself to slot together.
I would thoroughly recommend the ‘Look’ instrument panel set, a really easy improvement and the set belts are equally impressive.
Not much else to say really, just clicked together and I threw some paint at it!

Ps I may have given the big red knob a little too much bling! ::)

We all know guys like knobs ;)
Excellent job on the cockpit Guy . Love it ! Also noted the link to the site with poems , just what I needed :-*

The original Tamiya 1/48th Spit was good but this one looks amazing! Terrific work on the pit!

Yes, I was waiting for that one Alexis! I was going to make some kind of gag but thought I wouldn’t lower the tone, but you’ve done it for me! ;D
The poem link is weird.. saw it after I posted and when I go to edit it out it’s not there.. spooky
Thanks Rick, yes, it is a special model.

Looking really good! But with Tamiya plastic and you as the builder, what else could you expect. I'm looking forward to the rest, but especially the markings.
Cheers

At least you didn't say ..." polishing " the knob ..that would have been to much information ;)
Yes that is weird with the link showing ...The Lord works in wonderful ways :)

Thanks Fredrik :)
And Alexis... :o ;D
All closed up now.

Fit is lovely, but I did have a sliver of a gap along the wing roots (maybe me). Now normally, I’d get filler in all the detail and end up mucking the whole thing up, but I saw Fredrik use masking tape on his Eduard Spitfire build and I know it must be obvious to everyone else, but I’d never thought of that before (doh) ::). Tried it here and it worked beautifully! No mess anywhere. Can’t believe I’ve never tried that before! There’s no rivet detail on the top engine cowling and tbh I’m hugely grateful for that - it must be nigh on impossible to do that neatly and retain the detail.
Not really a criticism, as it all fits so well, but I’m never a fan of unnecessary joins - I realise they need to to give options for other marks but there is a big side panel section in the fuselage (each side, and a further one on the nose) that requires glue - it’s all but invisible, but still, and ditto for the wingtips.
The exhausts are slightly odd to me too, they come as 3 parts each and I can’t quite see the logic in this, and it’s quite fiddly - having had a closer look at these they look solid - no hollows - so I’ve ordered the Eduard Brassin ones as a treat ;)
Anyway... not far off priming her now.

Nice build!! Tamiya does provide therapeutic builds. Got the P47 on the bench for the same reason.

Looking really good Guy , with these kits one just needs to toss in glue and paint in the box and shake for 5 minutes !
Yes , using tape to cover details for filling works a charm . Being doing this for many years , mush easier and faster then having to replace the detail lost form sanding .
Looking forward on seeing some colour laid down on her :)
Alexis
-
Thanks Steve,
Yes, I think the P-47 will have to go on my list - I made one when it came out and remember being blown away by it...

No one like a show off Alexis :D I can’t believe I’ve never done that.. what a dope!
It will probably take me 6 or 7 minutes as I’m a perfectionist ;D
Guy
-
6-7 minutes , Who's showing off now ;)
Then again it would be most impressive if the whole build was finished in 6-7 minutes ;D
Alexis

Rom wasn't build on a day ... but your models? Just started, and already looks like a Spit :o You're wearing me out ..
That cockpit is a beauty!
Cheers,
Frank

Morning all,
Thanks :)
Progress slowed a little as some work around the house took precedent ::) (just to please Frank).
But, I’ve got the thing primed, bit of colour underneath and added a marbling effect. Real colours next! :D

I'm anxious to see how this turns out. Interesting color scheme.

The underside of the fuselage looks awesome also like the ghost effect with your shading on the top surface , not over done or to patchy :)

Nice and Subtle shading! Looking great!

Following this one with keen interest Guy - fabulous work so far. And what's not to like about a Spitfire ;)

Thanks everyone ;)
Really enjoying this one - such nice surface textures to spray. First colour laid down - MRP RAF Dark Brown. Pleasure to spray with as usual.

I’ll try harder...
Guy

Looking Great! I really have to try some of that paint someday 8)

Thanks Rick :D
It’s getting to the fun bit now, and having gotten a complex for building too fast, I’m deliberately trying to slow down the build and really not rush. I think it has helped actually as I spent ages on the masks and tried to make them idiot proof (not easy with me believe me!) and having painted the MRP RAF Dark Green I removed the masks and I had no bleeds/ overspray anywhere! That’s got to be a first. Not a lot of pre shading to be seen tbh, but it’s subtly there.
I think I mentioned before, that I want to make my builds fairly clean looking from now on, as I think this will look better in my new cabinet. So there will be a nod to weathering, but, frankly, not a lot. I’m quite happy with this.
Next up is masking the insignia, if I get no bleeds/ overspray on those - I’ll either wake up or be buying a lottery ticket!
Anyway, having a lot of fun with this, and I can see myself building a lot more Tamiya in the future :D
Guy
It looks a bit stark in the photos, but it does look a lot better in the flesh.

Great work Guy! Happy to see that the masks did their job and isn't Mr. Paint just fantastic!? I'm hoping that you're using Mr. Paint for the insignias as well. I really think it has got a very good looking insignia red/blue/yellow.
Let's hope it'll be a lottery ticket...

Yes, thanks Fredrik they worked very well ;D and yes, MRP for the markings.
Bit further on - masking up for the black walkway stripes first:

Turned out nicely!

Masked up for the roundels:
(https://i.postimg.cc/GpPm1MVb/C1-DD90-FD-1-F29-4524-9-D82-E9-B179-D9-CE21.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hJjBL0KY)
Although I have had my first mistake already, after spraying the areas white, I realised I’d used the wrong fuselage roundels! They are meant to be alternative under wing roundels and not the 4 colour larger ones - so I stripped off the masking, re masked using the bigger (correct) ones and sprayed again. All fine, but it took a lot of thin coats to cover the now dark surround to the original smaller white circle - so I’m expecting a bit of a paint ridge ::) I won’t know how bad until I finish all the colours and strip off the masks again...
Hey ho,
Guy
-
Really nice work on the camo Guy , looking forward on seeing the markings on her .
Alexis
-
Darn it... still, better caught now than later. Does that mean that you now lack the under wing roundel with the yellow outline?!
/F
-
Thanks Alexis :)

Nope, it’s fine Fredrik, there was enough. Just one of those annoying little oversights that I beat myself up with! I’ve finished the markings now - no pics yet, and yes it did have a noticeable ridge which I’ve sanded but at the cost of having to re spray some areas. One of these days I’ll have a smooth, perfect modelling project!
The do still look ok though, I’ll post something tomorrow...
Guy
-
As promised. A picture with all the painted markings complete.
Just a gloss coat then stencil decalling which I’m slightly concerned about as Tamiya decals are a little thick.
I’m still undecided about how much to weather. I rather like it as it is, which I know isn’t on trend! I’ll do something subtle though I guess. Masks worked beautifully Fredrik- just a shame I had the slight hiccup - it would have been as good as I could hoped for otherwise...
Thanks for popping by ;)

Excellent job on the markings Guy !
Yes , I as well find Tamiya decals to be on the thick side and don't like settling down in the panel lines . Subtle is how I would do the weathering , it will blend with the cockpit . I always think it looks weird when you see a build and the cockpit is heavy weathered and the out side frame is not and vise-versa . Too my eye it just doesn't look right .
Alexis

Impressive work on the Roundels in spite of the mishap! They look Fantastic to My Eyes!
RAGIII

Very nice paint work, Guy. Some very subtle weathering will set it off!

Great work with the markings, even with the mishap. You should get some of Eduard's stencils. I just used them on my Spits and you can scrape off the carrier film which really leaves just the text. I'll post some images in my thread tomorrow.

Thanks Alexis, Rick & Ken,

Fredrik - ah that sounds ideal, although I may try one or two and see what they look like.
That’s interesting though, are they like dry stencils or regular decals?

Excellent progress, Guy. Looking forward to the next installment :)

Well...
tried the Tamiya decals and wasn’t impressed, silvered and thick, so I’m holding off until I get a set of Eduard stencils (another expense!) they’re ordered so shouldn’t be too long.
I might make a start on the Eduard Triplane while I’m waiting...
Guy
-
I'm sure you'll be happy with them. Sorry for my late reply, but here it is.
Eduard's stencils are normal waterslide decals. I placed mine just as I normally would, but did get some silvering. Unhappy with that and with a hunch in the back of my mind I tried to remove the carrier film and using a toothpick that went quite alright.
/Fredrik
-
Very sharp work!!
Steve

Thanks Fredrik & Steve :)
Fredrik, like you I wasn’t overly impressed with the Eduard stencil decals - so I tried your scratching method. I actually just lifted a corner and peeled off the carrier film with tweezers - as you said, it left the lettering and looked painted on! Amazing :o
Anyway, that’s finished it - beautiful kit. I’d thoroughly recommend it. Sorry for the poor background (my bench), I keep meaning to get a piece of coloured card, maybe I’ll update the pictures at a later date.
Thanks for following along ;)

Fredrik, like you I wasn’t overly impressed with the Eduard stencil decals - so I tried your scratching method. I actually just lifted a corner and peeled off the carrier film with tweezers - as you said, it left the lettering and looked painted on! Amazing :o
Did you treat them with any decal fluids like Micro Sol? I did, so if you didn't then that might explain why I had to scrape them off and you could just lift them off.
Really beautiful work! I really should get mine finished...

No I didn’t Fredrik, it was weird though - it’s like a dry transfer, it literally peeled off in one piece leaving the lettering behind. I don’t know if it was Eduard’s intention, but the final effect is really cool!
Thank you for mentioning it though - if you hadn’t it would have been another one for the bin under my bench! (It’s getting quite full down there... ???)

Wonderful Spitfire Guy, and it will really spice up that new display cabinet you've ordered. The very subtle wear and weathering looks exactly as you had stated you wanted for future Builds, "So there will be a nod to weathering, but, frankly, not a lot." You've achieved Lots of realism but a very clean effect, nicely done!
Cheers,
