I found on Amazon some flat .1mm x .4mm resistance wire that people use to rebuild the heating coils in their electronic cigarettes that might be an alternative to PE for RAF wiring. The link to the item is:

I did a little experimenting with it tonight and was unable to get it to fold up, but I was able to trim the end with scissors so that it fit in .5mm brass tube (courtesy of Bob's Buckles and my wallet). It says it is annealed, but it is really springy, even after I annealed it some more. I don't think it will work for me, but then I still haven't finished rigging my first WWI model. Someone with more experience might want to give it a try to see if they can make it work. It's only .1mm wider than what Wingnut Wings specifies for RAF wiring, so it might look good if someone who has rigged with the PE wiring tries it. I think I am going to stick with the stretchy rigging material for now. So far, I have used EZ-line and UVDR line, and I have some ModelKasten to try. I also need to try fishing line.
