1:32 Roden Fokker Dr.1
« on: June 25, 2017, 11:00:16 PM »
This is my first model that I just finished a little over a week ago. The amount I learned on this little plane was amazing.  There are some gaps and such in it since I didn't know about model filler and frustration and rework taught me that the rigging needs to be the absolute last thing done (trying to  put clear coat on around rigging is a good way to knock the rigging off).  I also learned that, though 40AWG Nickel Chomium Resistance Wire looks cool, it is simply too rigid to be practical for rigging so the next model will use monofilament.  I'm also planning on trying my hand at airbrushing the next one.  I did get very lucky in that there was an airshow while I was making this plane that had a real Dr.1 at it so I was able to get some good pictures for reference.

The classic red triplane!
I take my hat off to you, I'd never have had the nerve to take on a biplane/triplane for my first kit.
Yes, do try out monofilament for rigging, even if you decide something else is better in the end.
Good luck!

That's one under the belt, Phillip, and you must feel pleased with what you have achieved. So, now, it's ever onwards and upwards...

Well done and best wishes
Nigel

As always I agree with my Amigo Ed! Sounds like you have learned quite a bit from your first build!

Lovely DR1 Phillip, there isnt a build that I have done that hasn't resulted in modifying techniques for the next one. I look forward to seeing more of your projects.

For a first build that is very good indeed. As Lance has written even when you get to model no. 100 you will still find that there are rings to learn and do better….(guess how we know).

Very nice

I'd have been very happy if my first model had looked as good as that..:)

What's next?
