1/72 Eduard Junkers J.1, 596/ 18, 1918. Now sadly no more
« on: February 06, 2017, 02:35:48 AM »
I've been having a clear out of all of my 1/72 kits and most will go for sale but I have three left in this scale before I concentrate on 1/48 and 1/32 for WW1 subjects(and possibly some between wars planes. I have a Stearman and a Fury lined up sometime in the future). I had a choice of either the Airfix new tool Eindecker or their rather lovely BE2C however I have opted for the J.1 as apart from WNW 1/32 rendition I can't find one in 1/48 so this will be the only chance I have to build one.....................................................until I have a go at the WNW version in my stash.
There's lots of PE but I shall only be using some of them and the air surface control horns I will scratch build as I reckon they'll be a lot sturdier than the PE offerings.
Anyway here are the bits and pieces and assorted gubbins and bumf.

Nice choice and good looking kit (will look good in lozenge).  Looking forward to your progress.

Only the rear fuselage is lozenged up. The upper wings are RLM71. I look forward to my progress too :)
I'm really enjoying my conversion from Spitfires, bf109s, P47s and the like to biplanes. Far more rewarding to build and well worth the effort. I'll still do the occasional "simple" build just for old times sake though.

Hi Toby,
it's going to be an interesting build and I'll follow. You are right, in 1/48 it is hard to get a kit of the J. I. There's just the Lone Star vacukit, long o.o.p. and although beautifully done, it requires lots of work. It is far from WNW or Eduard standards of course.

Great to see that you are building in God's Own Scale, and an unusual subject too. Looking forward to seeing this one progress - even if it is only half as good as your Fokker D VII it will be an excellent model.

Started on cockpit and engine.

The engine looks a lot harsher under flash than it does under normal lighting

This really is a great little kit. I picked one up as soon as it was rereleased and am looking forward to it. In the meantime I'll be watching this to see if there are any gotchas!

Thanks all. I had installed the engine and cockpit and was about to close up the fuselage when I realised I'd forgotten to attach the water pipes. Looking at the diagram and the lower long pipe I'm not convinced there's  enough of a vertical rise in it to attach to the wing mounted radiator. Only time will tell. Also I made a bit of a hash at fixing the rear s/belts but hopefully it won't be too visible once inside the fuselage. PE especially in this scale has never been my strong point. ::)
One thing of note although it won't be visible is that the rear horizontal bar should marry up to holes in the cockpit wall. It doesn't so if building this kit I'd suggest you shorten the central bar to get the horizontal one to line up

I think I'm progressing too fast ;D
The anomaly between the rear horizontal bar and where it's supposed to go into the fuselage can be seen here.  I'm not overly fussed about this as it can't be seen but I'm sure the more fastidious will address this when they come to build it.

More painting and decalling has taken place. Barely time to go to the pub. I shall rectify that though :)

I shall soon return to a larger scale and take more time but this is a fun  little build.

This is coming together beautifully Toby, you did a great job with the interior work and the engine and the wing painting looks great.

Beautiful work, Toby!  Looks as though the decals settled nicely over the corrugations.
Cheers,
