A little bit of me
« on: September 28, 2016, 10:53:06 PM »
Hello from the Isle of Man

More than fifty years ago I put together several Airfix 1/72 Sopwith Camels. They needed rigging. Cotton thread was hopeless, fuse wire not much better and stretched sprue was iffy. A satisfactory rigging material proved to be my own hair, although I never got each line right on the same model.

I am a returning kit builder, moving towards WNW.

Currently I am building cheaper and simpler subjects to re equip my toolbox, relearn rusty techniques and improve my skills, particularly spray painting and acrylic finishes. There are a few 1/48 Great War subjects, bought many years ago, in my build queue. I hope rigging them will produce better results than my hairy Camels.

I have been pleased to rediscover that kit construction is more engrossing than ever. While the essential attractions of making miniatures abide, changes in kits, mail oder shopping and online communications are astonishing, especially in communities like this one, where knowledge and encouragement are so generously shared.

It is a joy to join you all.

Christo

Welcome to the forum, Christo!  I look forward to your involvement.  I'm a 1/48 scale builder myself and as such, I highly recommend the new Copper State Dolphin and the Gaspatch Salmson.  Of course, I prefer rigging with monofilament over hair.
Cheers,
Bud

Welcome, Christo! It sounds like you are quite experienced already - don't wait too long before starting that WNW kit - they are not difficult, they just take a bit of time and effort! Regards, Marc

Hello Christo and welcome to the forum. At my advanced age, were I to use strands of my hair for rigging, at least the colour would be almost right.

Best wishes

Welcome Christo to the forum! I heard that even bold wwi modellers exist. Many of them use stretched sprue for rigging due to the shortage of human hair. Others take a wife and marry....
However, the best think in my opinion is to pick out the cherries of every scale and collect the good models in 1/48 and 1/32. For 1/48 it is Copper State Models and Eduard besides several others, in 1/32 it's of course Wingnut Wing. Roden kits aren't bad neither but cannot keep up with WNW.
Best wishes
