another one falls to the dreaded cataract....
« on: July 08, 2016, 02:45:36 AM »
After having just got a new job, completed training, and looking forward to getting back flying again after 6 months unemployed, I have now been told that due to a cataract, my left eye cannot be corrected to 20/20 as required, so I am now grounded until it is sorted.
I have seen the specialist and have a surgery date of August 17th. All very nice to be at home for the summer, the problem is I don't have short-term disability insurance, my employer has told me that they won't be paying me until I have my medical back, and I just found out that Massachusetts doesn't have a state short-term disability scheme. In other words, I will have zero income until I get back flying in late August! I think I will be making more use of the deck out the back and keeping beers in the fridge!

It's not been a particularly good year so far! Hopefully I will be able to continue with the modelling in the meantime, although it is getting awkward with the difference in vision between the left and right eyes.

Sorry to hear about your problems, Ian. The comforting thing is that the success rate for cataract operations is very high and other forum friends have spoken fulsomely of the improvement to their vision.

Best wishes
Nigel

That is truly a big disappointment to have to deal with Ian. As Nigel says though the solution is more or less assured so try to make the best of it until the situation is resolved. Best of luck with the surgery, by all reports the improvement in vision is phenomenal!
Cheers,
Lance

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles Ian.  I'm sure the surgery will do wonders...in the
meantime I guess it is making the best of a tough situation.  Hang in there, my friend.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Sorry to hear that you have been grounded Ian, I really hope that the cataract surgery brings your vision back to 20/20, it did for me.

Man, that's a bummer, Ian, but as Des has said, the surgery worked for him.  And now he can see to work in 1/48 scale.  You've still got a lot of flying years ahead of you, mate.
Cheers,

Wish you all the best. My father in law had the same surgery two weeks ago and all went good. He is now very happy and only needs glasses for reading.

Normally the improvement of your eyesight is impressive after surgery. You should remain confident there. I'm sorry to hear that until things have improved you're out of work or out of pay. We complain a lot in Europe, but it seems to me that such situations (generally speaking) are regulated a bit better here.
Wish you look with a speedy recovery.

regards,
Ivo
