80% scale 3D Printed Gnome Rotary
« on: May 06, 2016, 03:42:26 AM »
I looked at the various forums and thought this would best fit in scratch builds, although I may be wrong.

A man named Huw Thomas designed, 3D printed and assembled an impressive 80% scale Gnome rotary engine for an Airco DH.2 museum display. Details and photos here: http://earlyaero.com/3d-printed-rotary-engine/

A great way to create an engine when no originals are available, it would look great painted.

A great way to provide an engine at a scale less than full and to provide the look without using the real Mc Coy if at full scale. Originals do exist but most are in the hands of replica builders and restoration shops. I have seen a half a dozen Gnome and Le Rhone engines on pallets in the storage shops at the Olde Kingsbury Aerodrome in Kingsbury Tx, where replica and restored WWI and classic era aircraft are built and restored.

I was over at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino the other day and in one of the hangers they had a GeeBee (probably a replica).  And in place of that huge Pratt and Whitney, there was just a round piece of ply painted black with some crude chalk squiggles representing cylinders.
