WiP - Gaspatch Models 1/48 Salmson 2A2
« on: January 26, 2014, 06:32:31 PM »
Hi all,

Made a start today on the newly arrived Gaspatch Models 1/48 Salmson 2A2 (mid-type)... glad to be jumping back into a 1/48 scale kit, given I didn't build anything in this scale last year (or much of anything in any scale, to be honest....).  My aim is to build this kit straight out of the box; given the comprehensive content of this kit it should be a fun build.

I thought I would start at the front end instead of the usual cockpit. The kit contains the options of having the engine cowls on or off, and as such the kit contains a lovely radial engine. The engine comprises of around 50 pieces, so it is a mini-kit in itself, with lots of the parts count being taken up with the various bits of tubing, wiring and push-rods. It goes together surprisingly well, though there are some solid and inconvenient pour stubs to deal with, and some very tight tolerance fits for the etched pieces.

And with the exhaust ring and radiator dry fitted:

I'm not overly happy with the exhaust ring painting that I have done, but looking at photos a dark and dull colour that blends in with the forward cowl paint seems to be appropriate.

Next is onto the cockpit.  All feedback welcomed  :)

It's great to see one of these kits being build but it is even better to know that it is you Brad, who is building it. The engine looks spectacular, the detail appears to be uncompromised and your painting is superb, this build is going to be a real treat to watch.

Hi Brad, the engine is absolutely stunning, and I'm looking forward to see your interior develop. Another great build in the making.

Kind regards

Beautifully done engine, Brad. I really like the colour & wear on the cowling.
I'm looking forward to more updates.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Brad:

Impressive work for a day!  I think the it all looks great!  The cowling weathering and wear looks the business and will certainly add interest to the front end.  Looking forward to seeing you work through this one.  Mark (Guitarlute) is working on the WNW kit so it will be fun to follow along these two builds.

Best

Mark

Excellent start, Brad!  Fantastic looking engine.  I've got this baby in my stash, so I'm really looking forward to this build.
Cheers,
Bud

It is great to see you, Brad, back to the bench! A very fine start to this project! I will surely use your shots of the engine when I will start my WNW Salmson. Looking forward to see more.
As for the exhaust ring, I do not see anything wrong with it - looks just spot on!

Thanks folks!

Been getting some of the more 'tiresome' things out of the way, for example, the guns.  I usually leave these things until last and they seem like a chore, so I thought I would get them out of the way early....
