Title: Ansaldo A.1 Balilla - Merian Cooper (1/32, Aviattic)
Post by: PrzemoL on August 24, 2017, 05:18:25 AM: The final gallery of my version of Merian Cooper's 5 from 7th Fighter Squadron (Kościuszko). All made possible thanks to the years-long labour by Richard and his team as well as a small but important contribution from Melius Manu with the corrected decals with the squadron badge. My sincere thanks to all of you for making me so happy with having this lovely model in my collection.
The last touch was the base for which I made use of the reprint (included in the Polish boxing by Aviattic) of Cooper's letter to Marshal Józef Piłsudski offering his services in the war for Polish independence atfer WW1. I decided this letter suitably framed will make for a fine base for this model depicting the aircraft, in which the perilous odissey for Cooper started when he was shot down on July 13th, 1920 and was captured by the reds. He survived only because he managed to conceal the fact he was an American airman from the unit they hated so much. He managed to escape and returned to the unit in 1921.

I especially like the base to set the model off: it includes some interesting information about a period of history of which I know very little. This weekend I took part in a modelling contest in Łask, a home of 32nd Tactical Aircraft Base, the contest was held in the base itself. I submitted my Balilla to the Aircraft 1:32 class where it was easily not only the smallest one among several 2WW single-seaters but also virtually dwarved by spectacular Zoukei Mura He-219, Tamiya Mosquito, or diminished by scratch built Avro Triplane pre WW1. When I saw this competition I was not too optimistic. But then it turned out that judges liked it, Balilla was one of 3-4 commended models in this class. But then it also got a special prize for the best model from fellow modellers from Inowroclaw Modelling Club, a few moments later - the special prize awarded by the Commander-in-Chief of the Base for the best model in Polish markings and to make me completely stunned - the small Grand Prix for the best aircraft model in the show. You bet I will long remember this modelling weekend...

This time a modelling contest in Szczecin (north-west corner of Poland) brought me four trophies: commendation in 1/32 class, two special prizes from modelling clubs - Chełmża and local organizers from Szczecin but on the top of it - the Cup of Mayor of City of Szczecin for the best model in the show.
