Title: Wingnut Wings Hansa-Brandenburg W.12 1183 Oblt.z.S. Christiansen
Post by: lcarroll on September 06, 2016, 06:34:02 AM
This will be the basis for my entry in the Diorama Group Build. I started cleaning up the parts for the interior yesterday to fill time while awaiting After Market items ordered for another Build already underway but now delayed.
I chose Christiansen's W.12 as the subject mostly due to his status as one of the top scorers on the German Navy's Ace list and his impressive war service as leader of the Zeebrugge Sea Plane Group.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_4993.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_4993.jpg.html)

I have three excellent reference publications for this Build: Jack Herris's excellent Aeronaut Books Publication, Osprey's Naval Aces of WWI Vol. 2, and the indispensable Datafile on the Aircraft.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_4996.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_4996.jpg.html)

For markings I have Rowan's excellent Pheon Decal Set 32056 and, not illustrated, his generous free follow up correction logo for Christiansen's aircraft. The Kit Lozenge will be replaced by the much preferred Aviattic Naval Hex Printed Linen product. I am a great fan of both of these lines of products and believe our group should support them as much as possible, they bring a great deal to our Hobby. In both cases I've included the photo for illustration purposes only.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_4994.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_4994.jpg.html)

Finally I'll be using HGW Seat Belts and the Gas Patch Parabellum Gun for the Observer station. Czech Master Spandaus from a previous stock will be used for the twin forward firing LMG 08's provided on this C3MG version of the Early HB W.12. Most of these items are still "in the mail".
With numerous outstanding Build Logs for this aircraft already published here there should be no lack of great information and inspiration to draw on for this Build. I have some other items on order to turn this into a, albeit limited scope, Diorama, my first attempt and I look forward to the experience.
Next update will be on the cockpit module with the Benz engine to follow.
Cheers,
Lance

Well Rick, as I say often, there's no lack of entertainment when Mr. Bean builds a Model Airplane; I'm sure I can manufacture enough crises to keep the "treat and entertainment index" pegged well to the right of the scale! ::)
James, you sure read the signs right; as soon as you said I'd be into it up to my knees....... I was indeed!
Des, a "float" aircraft several Group Builds late but hopefully fitting the theme for this one.
I managed to get the wood base coat on since the previous post, hopefully get some oil woodgrain on tomorrow. I was actually surprised at the amount of flash and seams on the sprues, much more then the average on a Wingnut Kit but still much better then other brands.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Manni. I've had a minor set back, applied my wood base by brush and I really don't like the results so I'm going to strip the parts and use the air brush, only a one day delay in progress. This is a lesson I've learned more then once, you'd think I'd learn! :-\ :-[

Well, that was 3 months ago, and I failed doing a dual Build! I completed the Nieuport 17, and now have dusted this one off and hopefully will complete it before the Group Build deadline! I've been working on the cockpit interior the past several days, what a transition from Hobbycraft back to Wingnut Wings! I'll post an update when the cockpit module is completed, so far a very impressive Kit...........no surprise there!

Missed this first time round Lance - really glad I caught it this time. My contribution was also a first attempt at a diorama - I am sure that yours will be a great deal more  interesting not least because of the subject.

PS Bob did not know it at the time but I was the ginger one on the left in the photo!

Looking forward to this one, Lance!  Doing the very same plane, but have her on pause at the moment due to having melted the floats.  This just might be the inspiration I need to get back on it.

Stephen,
I thought there was something familiar there.........

Bud,
Yet more convincing reason for me to stay away from the hair dryer method! Those float decals have me nervous, there's probably not enough Microsol in the "Free World" for those little devils. I suspect there'll be more then a modicum of drama here when I get to that step! :o ::) Were you able to order replacements??

Tug,
Thanks, I may need a little dose of luck given the float comments above!

Meanwhile nothing accomplished today as real life tasks provide an obstacle between Builder and Workbench here! :(
Cheers,
Lance

Finally, some real progress to log. Seems bench time is difficult to find this time of the year.
The inside framing and interior module is complete. The various wood portions were done with an acrylic wood base coat and the grain effect with Winsor Newton Raw Sienna vs. my usual Burnt Sienna Oil, lighter then my previous efforts. They then received a very light coat of Tamiya Clear Yellow followed by a sealing coat of Vallejo Satin Polyurethane Varnish. Details were picked out with both enamels and acrylics.
My apologies for the out of focus photo which I just noticed, but the details follow.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5188.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5188.jpg.html)

The Instructions called for Semi gloss white on the upper portions of the interior fuselage however I used a slightly "Buff" off white, the inside of the engine cowlings portion was masked off and done with Alclad II Dull Aluminum.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5193.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5193.jpg.html)

I modified HGW Belts from the HB.29 Set I had on hand as it had belts for two models. The Wingnut instructions were a bit vague on placement and connections so I added eyelets to the terminal springs to attach them. The one longer belt, second from left, ended up with the spring effect on the wrong side however is not visible once installed so was left as is.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5186.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5186.jpg.html)

The belts were installed and then "dirtied" up a little with mid brown dry pastels.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5189.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5189.jpg.html)

The Instrument panel was completed using Aeroclub Bezels, some scrap PE Fuel Selector Levers and Future for the glass faces.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5192.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5192.jpg.html)

The cockpit detailing on this Kit is excellent, I added only a few items like the line from the Manual Fuel Pressure Pump and a set of clamps made from lead shrink seal on a Malt Scotch Whisky Bottle......... need to get another as I'm running out of shrink seal again!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5195.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5195.jpg.html)

The flight control cables were then all rigged in using Modelkasten elastic thread, a very long and "fiddley" task which had to be done after assembly of the module. The tweezers and Optivisor got intense workouts but after an afternoon of eyestrain and lingual gymnastics the plan came together with excellent results!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5196.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5196.jpg.html)

The control cables were painted with Mr Metal Color Stainless.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5198.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5198.jpg.html)

Here's a few detail shots of the completed cockpits:

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5200.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5200.jpg.html)

The Instrument Panel is shown "posed" here as the engine bearer frame platform it is attached to won't be installed until the fuselage is closed.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5202.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5202.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5203.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5203.jpg.html)

This last photo was taken without the Instrument Panel in place, thus the nasty scraped frame members on the attachment locations.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5199.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5199.jpg.html)

Next comes the engine which I hope to start working on tomorrow. Thus far I'm very impressed with the fit of this Kit, another engineering marvel from Wingnut Wings!

Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for sharing,Lance!
Very impressive build. The dashboard looks terrific and the light wood is very convincing. Top seatbelts. It is just sad that all the details will disappear in the fuselage and are covered by the upper wing. The more important are the fotos you have taken.

Not had much time? What speed do you work at?

That is a tremendously well detailed interior Lance - what a pity that it will not be visible when the model is complete. Any chance that you could leave a side panel off so that the interior could be seen?

Stephen.

  Thanks Guys, much appreciated!
Stephen,
I plan to pose both Pilot Cockpit doors open/down and with the rear cockpit less hidden by the upper wing hopefully a reasonable amount of detail will show.

Zavod,
Here's the formula I use and a correction to my earlier statement on the wood work:
I mix 1 part Tamiya Acrylic XF-55 Deck Tan, 1 part XF-59 Desert Yellow, and 1.5 parts X-2 White. I airbrush it at about 40% thinned with their Lacquer Thinner and that is the "wood base".
For grain streaking I use Winsor Newton Artist's Oils (Winton Oil Colour on the tube) #2 Burnt Sienna for a darker and more reddish shade or, on this build #34 Raw Sienna for a more golden and lighter shade. I mix a bit of Winsor Newton's "Liquin" into the oils to speed up the drying; it usually is dry enough to over coat after 24 hours.
I normally use a top coat of Tamiya  X-26 Clear Orange on the darker version and on this Build I used X-24 Clear Yellow as I was after a lighter shade. I 'll correct my opening comments about Clear Orange earlier in the Thread.
   Hope this works for you!
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you Guy.
Borsos, it will be very basic. I've no experience with figures so planned to do a base as part of the Zeebrugge upper pier with cobble stones, a rail track section and the aircraft on it's trolley. I also have the Aviattic refuelling tank to add and will hopefully add a bit more to the scene. Very basic as this is my very first effort at a Diorama.

A quick and frankly uninspiring pre-Holiday Break update. The upper wing is molded in 3 separate sections with the center portion having optional large or small cutouts above the cockpit. The resulting seams need filling as there are no corresponding seams on the real aircraft. As I've had a few seams on previous Builds reappear after several weeks/months using the standard putty fillers I decided to try Prze's method of using thick CA as a gap filler.
Here's the top and then bottom seams filled with Medium viscosity CA. Not a pretty sight at this stage.........

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5209.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5209.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5212.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5212.jpg.html)

I used masking tape to control the scraping and sanding footprints and to protect the rib tapes, it worked out quite well.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5210.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5210.jpg.html)

Each seam was leveled with a #9 Swann-Morton Blade (Thank You James K.!) and then descending grades of Wet & Dry Sand Paper. I did add the smallest amount of Tamiya Grey Surface Primer to a few shallow sink marks after the second coat of CA. I'm quite pleased with the results and anxious to see if the finished seams withstand the test of time.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5213.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5213.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5215.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5215.jpg.html)

Now I can get back to building the Benz III. I'll be travelling away tomorrow to spend Christmas with family, hope to be back, settled in, and getting some good quality time at the work bench well before New Years.
Cheers,
Lance

Why not use "supafilla"? (CA mixed with talcum powder)

Quote
Try this, and you'll chuck all your other putty in the trash: mix medium viscosity CA approx 50/50 with talcum powder, 'til you get the consistency of runny toothpaste ( I pour the talc on a vinyl-type coffee can/margarine tub lid, drop the CA into it, and mix the talc into the CA letting the CA be my "limiting factor" on how much filler is produced at one time). Apply the composite to your seam, ejector pin mark, gap, smooth it, wait 15 min, and start sanding! Apply it sparingly, however, as it doesn't shrink like other putty. You can also wait 15 days to sand, as it doesn't get harder the longer it cures, and it works on resin as well as plastic. It doesn't soften thin (vac) plastic like petroleum based putty does, and actually adds structural integrity, so you don't have to back large gaps with plastic . Evidently the "Car Guys" have been using this for years to do major bodywork alterations on their models. To see how well "Supafilla" (my name for it) works, carve/gouge a dime-sized hole in some 40 thou plastic sheet, fill the hole w/ Supafilla, and sand both sides. When you're done I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. Regards, Rob

   Thanks for the comments, Gents.
Justin, the thicker (Labelled "Medium Viscosity") doesn't appear to shrink at all, but the thin requires several applications when I try it for this.
Bo, first time I've heard of this trick, any special instructions?
Boggie, I hope to be back in a week, leaving here for a 6 hour drive in an hour or so.

Lance, see amended post above -- everything you need to know about Supafilla

I'll add a bonus hint: CA does not stick to Delrin ;)

Firstly Thanks, Bo, for the Supafilla info, I'll have to try it on my next project, or even perhaps on this one when I "close it up".
Next, another update, the Holiday Season is past and I've finally got a few hours in on the work bench.
I completed the Benz III engine electing to use the optional Part E7 for the right side of the cylinder bank and add my own stainless push/lifter rods. Other additions are the ignition wires, the sheet conduits that route them from the distributers to their respective plugs, and the throttle linkage on the port side.
The wire supports/conduits were completed first from lead shrink seal from a Scotch Whiskey bottle, it's a toss up as to whether emptying the bottle or doing the prefabricating is more enjoyable! I used my Mission Models Etchmate with the guide reversed to do the bends.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5218.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5218.jpg.html)

The finished products, and then installed.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5222.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5222.jpg.html)

The intake manifolds were then added and the weathering of the engine started.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5224.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5224.jpg.html)

Next the ignition harness was added using salvaged copper wire and some scrap PE for plug connectors. The connectors are a little "rough" however they are mainly out of sight with the engine cowling panels in place. The Camera Machro setting reveals a few touchups required to the "plumbing".

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5226.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5226.jpg.html)

The weathering of the engine is complete using several applications of thin black and brown oil washes. Some "oil" was also added to the engine bearer panels.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5227.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5227.jpg.html)

..... and finally the completed left side with the steel throttle linkage assembly added. This is an unashamed direct copy of the one Prze added in his build as I couldn't find any photos of the real thing. The Machro Mode is, as always, humbling regarding paint quality........and the bit of dog fuzz by Cylinder #5 has been removed!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5231.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5231.jpg.html)

I've got the floats together and will be working on the completion of the fuselage next.
Cheers,
Lance

I'm way overdue for an update on this build and have made some progress recently. I'll break the update into two "installments"; here's the first.
I'm trying to paint the laminated prop to take advantage of the nicely molded brass end caps on the Kit version. If I don't like the results I'll fall back to my normal hand carved version and paint the brass tips on that. Here's the first step masked and ready to be wood grained with Winsor Newton Oils, pretty rough at this stage!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5235.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5235.jpg.html)

The fuselage was closed up and the seams, after careful removal of excess paint, proved a minor challenge, requiring only a bit of CA as a filler and a single coat of Tamiya Primer before sanding.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5236.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5236.jpg.html)

All lozenge covered areas were given a good coat of Tamiya X2 Gloss white per Aviattic's instructions and the fuselage dorsal spine area and solid tailplane were decaled with the Aviattic "Naval Hex" Lozenge which behaved very well.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5237.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5237.jpg.html)

I'm really pleased with the Lozenge; the fabric effect as seen here is very pleasing to the eye!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5238.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5238.jpg.html)

The upper portions of the flying surfaces were done in white and the lowers left in grey for addition of the pre-shading in dark grey and flat black respectively.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5245.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5245.jpg.html)

 (http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5246_1.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5246_1.jpg.html)

The lozenge was applied in sections as I find it easier to manage that way. Care had to be taken to keep the "chord wise/ Span Wise orientation of the pattern correct.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5250.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5250.jpg.html)

As I anticipated the floats proved a real challenge for decaling. The Kit Decals were used as templates, the Aviattic lozenge cut, and then the new decals were cut into three parts for application to the floats.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5239.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5239.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5248.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5248.jpg.html)

Now I'll try for a few more photos and bring this Thread up to date before it gets away on me again!
Cheers,
Lance

There is one thing I stumble about. The pattern on the floats, I think, and please correct me if I am wrong, were painted on the wood of the floats and not covered by printed linen.

Thank you Richard, for clearing this point. So they really glued printed linen on the wood structure. There is no doubt, that I believe you, you are a well known specialist, but why did they do this? just for protection of the wood? or was it lazieness to avoid to paint it by hand?

Manni

Thanks for the comments and encouragement, Guys.
Manni, Richard has commented the same as my interpretation of the info on the finish of the floats, either fabric or painted on and, later on some examples, covered with the black bitumen-like finish. Either way I elected the decals rather then hand painting the intricate, and hard to match, pattern. I've stayed with the Hex finish on the floats to follow the scheme for Christiansen's #1183 per Rowan's Pheon Decal Instructions. I am of the opinion that, given we more or less know that the plywood spine and tail section were covered with the doped fabric, use of the same technique on the floats would not be an unreasonable assumption.
Cheers,
Lance

This will complete the latest update and bring it in line with where this project is at. The Naval Hex Lozenge is complete and I'm quite pleased with the results, I found it easier to work with then previous Lozenge applications. Could be I'm finally "getting it" (I'm a slow learner!) or it's a newer formula. The wing walks were covered with Bare Metal Foil Matte Aluminum which had been embossed with a "Rosie the Riveter" Riveting wheel. It'll look much better once a coat of flat clear is applied.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5259.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5259.jpg.html)

I like the effect the pre-shading produced for both top and bottom surfaces, subtle but definitely visible.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5260.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5260.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5263.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5263.jpg.html)

The floats are less then ideal, I used both Microsol and a hair dryer to get just "OK" results and touched up the split areas with dark grey enamel wash. This was the one detail of this Kit I dreaded and it did not disappoint!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5261_1.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5261_1.jpg.html)

The last part completed was the addition of the under wing decals which, as with all Wingnut Decals worked beautifully. Now it's time to get at some of the exterior details.
Cheers,
Lance

Very nice progress Lance.  :)

Your wing preshading is excellent. Just the right amount IMHO.

I like your metal wing walks too. Your embossing detail certainly adds to the "wow" factor.

I wonder how the real floats looked when covered with fabric?

Surely it would not have conformed to the ridges and contours without a few irregularities.

BTW, I have it on good authority that grey paint was the recommended "fix" for float fabric issues, therefore your technique is

historically correct.  ;)  ;D.  And looks good too!

Bring on the next installment please! But you do deserve a small scotch first.  :)

Thanks James, and thank you for your comments as well Boggie. Applying fabric to the floats must have been as much of a challenge as the model version as you say, I can see where it would cause the refinishers to seek a good glass of schnapps as well, so a glass of Scotch here doesn't seem at all unreasonable! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

Gary, Juan and Rick,
Thanks for looking and commenting; the floats are the big challenge in this Build once the choice of the Hex vs. plain black scheme is made. I figured I'd use a different scheme with black floats as a fall back if they didn't work out but they worked out reasonably well. Now I've got to get some work done on the diorama aspects of the project.
Cheers,

Eric Larson recently shared his W.12 on the GW32S FB group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/393845854297672) -- he did something really clever with the floats -- went to Lowe's and color-matched the decals, got three small pots of paint and used that to repair the places where they wouldn't conform.

That is clever; I'll keep that in mind for the next time I get into trouble like this. We have an excellent Paint Shop in our small city/town and they do a great match with spectrum analysis, wish I'd have thought of this earlier!

Another small update on this project. I completed all of the guns and got the two Spandau LMG 08's installed. 1183 was a C3MG version of the normally single Spandau design having the extra synchronised "08" mounted on the left side.
     The standard right gun......

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5272.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5272.jpg.html)

...... and the second on the left side:

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5271.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5271.jpg.html)

The Observer's Parabellum 14 completed and ready for installation later.  I've added a strip of HGW Fabric to the magazines for this one, the two spares have been tucked away into the Observer's "pit".

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5283.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5283.jpg.html)

The float assembly is completed excepting the cross rigging and will be attached to the aircraft after the upper wing installation is complete. The Macro Mode proves a bit more touch up work is required here.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5279.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5279.jpg.html)

The lower wing bottom cross fields were post shaded very lightly and sealed.....

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5278.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5278.jpg.html)

Last, some streaking and weathering was started on the fuselage after first adding the Pheon Fuselage decals.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5277.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5277.jpg.html)

I'm still pecking away at the fuel cart for the scene, and have ordered various bits and pieces to create, at best, a very simple diorama. That part I admit will be made up as I go along!!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for looking in and commenting, James, Manni, and Gary. I'm going lighter then usual on the weathering on this one as all the photos seem to show a very clean and well maintained fleet of aircraft compared to their land based cousins.

This is really outstanding Lance. Your very slight weathering is very effective - worn but not worn out! I am really looking forward to seeing how you make up the background parts for the duo too.

Thanks Stephen, for looking and commenting. I'm just prepping the beast for a satin top coat and then hope to get at the bits and pieces for the rather limited Diorama Base, a labour based on making most of it up as I go along. Hardly and organised approach in comparison to many of our skilled contemporaries here! ::)

Another update on this one, progress has been steady the last two weeks.
I've completed the Ground Handling and Maintenance components that will all be part of the Diorama Style Base including the Kit Beaching Dollies and support stands and the Aviattic Refuelling Tank.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5284.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5284.jpg.html)

I struggled a bit with the Fuel Cart, breaking just about every piece at one time or other in the building process. Resin is a new medium to me and it showed! The wood was done with the standard acrylic Wood Base and then oil streaking followed by Tamiya Transparent Orange. The Handling and support frame was re-done with brass tubing.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5286.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5286.jpg.html)

The metal wheel rims were done with Mr. Metal Colour "Stainless".

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5289.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5289.jpg.html)

I'll be adding a few more Scratch Built items to the scene, to be covered later.

   At this point I added a lot of the "flimsy bits" prior to tackling the upper wing installation, first the cockpit side doors;

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5292.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5292.jpg.html)

...... The windscreen;

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5293.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5293.jpg.html)

and a view from the rear.......

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5296.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5296.jpg.html)

...... the Parabellum "Ring" (and the earlier installed spare magazines now visible)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5294.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5294.jpg.html)

.........  the wing mounted compass; (like many spots some touch up of the Vallejo Polyurethane Satin overcoat is required here)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5295.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5295.jpg.html)

.....and finally the lifting hooks (3 as depicted in the Data File 3 View).......

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5310.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5310.jpg.html)

Now it was time to mount the upper wing. The wing chord proved too much for my AeroClub Jig (it's only failing so I think I'll be looking into a Vertigo Jig for the larger subjects) I elected to mount the Model on the Magic Third Hand and CA'd the upper wing and two inner struts, then simply popped the outer struts in carefully (CA as well) and was very pleased with the results. Perfectly aligned, solid, and all in under 10 minutes, a testament to Wingnut Wings engineering yet again!

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5300.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5300.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5301.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5301.jpg.html)

The next big step is to install the float assemblies and complete the rigging.
Cheers,
Lance

Wow Lance - if that is making it up as you go along then I would like some of that talent please. Most of my builds are based on that principle (just check the SSW Rs1 if you don't believe me!), but your work is first class. I would never have been able to tell that you had problems with the refuelling cart - it looks well nigh perfect to me.

Hi Lance,
You're W.12 is coming along beautifully.  I really like the wood effect on the beaching dollies.
What kind of problems did you encounter with the floats.  I actually attached them on mine before adding the wings.

Cheers,
Eric

Eric,
They went on the lower fuselage pretty well. I then attached the outer struts (Parts F4 & F5)  from mid lower wing to float on one side, the other side strut was slightly too short to fit properly by 1mm approx. The only thing that stood out was a very slight difference in how deep the fuselage attachment struts were set. It sat level and was solid so I ended up making very short extensions for the tabs on the strut ends. :-\
Cheers,
Lance

Bummer.  The tolerances on WNW kits in general can be very unforgiving and now that you mention it I remember those outer struts being quite tight.  Sounds like you found a good solution though and no one will be the wiser.  Unless they read this of course.  :)

Eric,
Obviously my error caused the opposite of a tight fit, they ended up too loose overall which resulted in the gap on the "completion" side. As you say, the tolerances on these Kits are very unforgiving, a lesson I continue to learn over and over again! I'll take a few photos later; once touched up I'm hoping it all blends together. As for hiding the error, good luck, the skill levels of this Forum Group make that very unlikely at best. That "perfect" Build continues to elude me! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

So, another significant bit of progress achieved on this project. The aircraft is complete; now it's time to get at the display base and the accessories to create some form of Diorama. I've taken some quick photos of the aircraft for the interim. Once It's on the display base I'll take more for "Completed Models."
The rigging, and there's not a lot on this bird, was completed with Modelkasten elastic thread, stainless guitar wire for the aileron cables between upper and lower wing, and Bob's Buckles. The float support wires were done float to float as opposed to between the float spars as recommended by, I believe, Przemol on his Build.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5324.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5324.jpg.html)

This is the front strut joint on the left side that had a 1-2mm extension added as did the rear one, the only solution I could determine for the fit problem I was struggling with earlier.

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Models%20Three/IMG_5319.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Models%20Three/IMG_5319.jpg.html)

The exhaust assembly was added at the very end to prevent accidental removal.......

.....and the same for the prop and the GasPatch Parabellum.

Only just realised that you have finished this aircraft. That is a stunner - if the base is only half as good you will have something to be very proud of there. Hopefully you will put the whole into a covered display box and put it somewhere prominent in the house so that visitors can see it.

If the standard of your models is the result of "flagging confidence", then I say,

Well Thank You for that! I do feel confident in my wine evaluating skills, but not so much in the basics of this Hobby we share lately. A judgement from the outside of the forest on the composition of the trees is always welcome, and often more in perspective! Thanks Gary. I'm afraid it's destined to be more of an "enhanced display base" then a Diorama!
Cheers,
Lance

I'm going to call this one complete. I'll post some more photos on Completed Models later on, for now here's the wrap up of the Build Log.

First step in the completion process was the finishing of the Base. It represents the Dock and Jetty area in front of the storage and maintenance hangars at the seaplane base on the Mole at Zeebrugge. The aircraft could be rolled up sloped ramps on dollies from the water and/or lifted by cranes up to the jetty. Larger four wheeled dollies operated on rails were used to move the aircraft further and also into their shelters or maintenance hangars. The area was cobblestoned, concrete, and at the water side planked. I used plastic sheet cobble stone landscaping, some rails begged from a fellow Model Club Member, and popsicle sticks from a craft shop for the planking. The name plate is from a trophy and engraving store.

The Aviattic Fuel Cart was added to the scene to provide a little added realism.

I read that every Diorama should have a story line, so.........
The setting depicts a minor maintenance activity on the dock, the aircraft will be serviced in preparation for it's next mission and then hoisted onto a larger dolly, secured with a tie down chain, and rolled into the hangar until the mission time is closer. It's lunch time so the tools etc are left as is, the maintenance crew is at the Mess Hall for wurst and beer (lucky devils!), and time stands still..... (weak, I know!)

The work table is a top supported by saw horses, all scratch built. I added some A/M Tools, a bucket, a couple of rags, and the removed engine panel is leaning on the table. The ladder is scratched as well, the smaller portable dollies and tail stand are from the Kit. The Chain is an A/M version for Armour Modelling. My trusty camera tells me a little more glue is required on the edge of that cobblestone material!

I've got a dozen or so more photos for the Completed Models section later. I call this an "enhanced Display Base" as opposed to a real Diorama but I hope it meets the criteria for the Group Build. I enjoyed the mental exercise of "inventing" a scene, and the Kit, like all of Wingnut's offerings was an enjoyable Build overall.
Hope you like it, and I look forward to some feedback.
Cheers,
Lance

A superb result Lance, your story line is excellent and what you have depicted here fits the story perfectly. All of the accessories you have added certainly gives the scene a sense of realism, looking forward to seeing the remainder of the photos in the completed model board.

Thank you both very much, Des and Borsos! Your comments are welcome and appreciated. It's something I hadn't tried before so it's good to know it's acceptable and appropriate for the Group Build.
Cheers,
Lance

This is a much better presentation than mine Lance - display or diorama. The model itself is first class but the setting makes it even more interesting and tempting to look at more closely. A very stimulating build thread and a wonderful finish. I am drooling in anticipation of the other images.

Lance,
I thought I had commented earlier but obviously I was mistaken. Your build was terrific to follow and he results as beautiful as always. I love your presentation and hope I can get my entry in by the deadline and that it is 1/2 as good as yours!
